  • Clearcase is evil. It is over engineered, complex, slow, a pain in the arse to develop against, expensive to buy / run / maintain, requires its own admin (per site), cripplingly slow over remote connections and generally just sucks.

I really don't understand why any company would ever want to use it when there is such an abundance of other source control systems which are cheaper, faster and easier to maintain.

  • Clearcase server is a quick software install, but the planning and prep for creating a server takes forever. And ever since IBM bought Rational, ClearCase and ClearQuest support have completely tanked. Rational used to respond to customer requests for changes. IBM just tells you no or puts your request into the "endless queue". If your problem doesn't cause system outages, they won't change the model. I know - I was a CC admin for 8 years.

  • god I hate clearcase...as a developer I find myself spending more time on the SCM than the actual source...its the damn configspecs....

  • This must be a different ClearCase, the one that I install is actually not difficult or time consuming to install.

  • The only reason I don't go through this with CC is that I've been doing it for twelve years. I still feel pity for anyone trying to install and deploy it without a very experienced helper/mentor. And yes, you still have to throw a lot of hardware at it.

Can't comment on Accurev because I've never used it.

  • I've used clearcase for years and love it and hate it. Most powerful tool around but a real pain to manage, slow, complex, and now ibm owns it. I don't know accurev but at least they have a sense of humor!

  • lol

  • What a hoot! This really nails the experience. It totally reminds me of when I was a ClearCase admin and toolsmith and what a relief it was to go to AccuRev.
