I'm unsure why you want this to this extent... my dog also naturally will stop at grass borders (I reenforced this at the puppy stage when he was still on a long line as we lived in an apartment complex with a parking lot I didn't want him in). I attached "stay on the grass!" to it, though at this point is isn't needed. However a complete refusal to retrieve to frisbee after command is given comes across as uneasy about surface change, which is something I'm surprised you'd want....
@Blitzavavideo that is conditional, and something the dog has decided is foreign and uncomfrtable, and just like humans and all other animals our minds can change. this puts the decision to not cross the "border" not in the dogs control, or the conditional length of cord, but 'i am not going to cross this line because the alpha-dog wont let me'. im sureyou have a good 'return' call, but someone that doesnt, once thier dog break that barrier itd be hard to call them back. multiple purpose this is
I was waiting for this tutorial for 7 months, 2 days ago my dog got hit by a car after my friend's daughter threw a tennis ball into road. I guess I can only blame myself.
I'm looking forward to this tutorial too. We share our back yard and I would like to let my pup out without me and not worry about him going on the other people's deck or in their house.
When are you going to post the tutorial video of this command? It would be SUPER useful for my dog... I'm always afraid of him wandering into the street and he makes a mess in our vegetable and flower garden! Please post the tutorial as soon as you can... Thanks! -Haley
Can't wait for the tutorial. My collie pup is 6 months old and I could really do with teaching him this. Thanks for all the others ...really really helpful as this is the 1st time I've tried clicker training..what a difference!!
I really love your training videos! Here in Denmark you are a legend among me and my dog-friends. When I get into troubles with my dog, I turn to your videos, and oh my! how well everything works so fast.
I really want the tutorial for this "invisible barriers". Didn't you make it yet, or have I just missed it? Love and respect from me and my dog.
(Sorry, if there are many mistakes in my written English, as I said: I'm not from any English speaking country.
Please post the tutorial soon! I'm getting my new puppy next summer and definately want to teach this to her. Thank you for your previous "how to" videos :) Your dogs are amazing!
Hi Emily, that's just amazing - what beautiful and clever dogs you have. I am the proud owner of Gaia (10 months old), who would love to learn about invisible barriers. Living close to a larger road, I almost never have her running free (with that said, we do go to dog parks, and other areas for her to do that) because I'm not totally able to call her to me when there's a distraction. Just saw your video on "teaching stay" and that is our next projekt I think. Looking forward to your tutorial...

Emily, this is fascinating! I have racked my brain about this and can't imagine how you did this. Add me to the list of people who can't wait for this tutorial. Also, I totally agree with another commenter suggested you accept Paypal for donations (would be a good idea for your friend Pam as well). I learn so much from your (and Pam's) videos -- would love to donate to support the cause :-)
It's a little bit like Blair-Witch-Project with your breathing ^^
Let me guess, it's a little bit like STAY .. don't cross the line .. a nogo-zone .. do you know to lunge as dogsport? You're in the middle of a circle and the dog hast to stay outside and do as you say.
I would go on the sidewalk and let my dog heel, then go further away and reward staying at the grass, later working with easy objects (not the most loved toy ^^) lay them on the street, then throw them ... click for not leaving ;)

i think i might have an idea on how you trained splash. Im thinking you showed her what you WANTED from her first (with clicker ofcourse) and ignored them when they didnt like in all your other vids. I cant wait to see the toturial to be sure. We really appretiate you sharing your awsomeness :). P.S I'm a 14 year old girl im using my brother's account :3
Please give us the tutorial soon! That was a great video :) This is one of the tricks that I think would be so important to teach every dog to master. It would be great to have a dog that stays in the garden reliably. How do you know how and from which part of the behavioural chain to start training these kind of behaviours? Thank you!
Puh-leeeeease hurry with the tutorial, this is wonderful. In fact, Emily, I know you could use the money so I'd like to suggest you open a paypal account, and invite folks who want the tutorial to buy it from you for what we'd pay for a Starbucks coffee, about $3.00. You can email it to them once they've paid you. You've given so much of your expertise for free, you absolutely deserve to be compensated so sometimes you should charge. We adore you and want you to be sustained in this work.
Like everyone else I'm looking forward to the tutorial. I've only ever seen this taught with positive punishment. I'll be taking notes since so many of the parks I take my dog to are unfenced and close to roads. I can't wait!
Neither Mi or Q will leave the yard (even with the gate wide open) without me but I am oblivious as to how I trained that. Mi won't even leave with all the doors open and me leaving if I say, "Oh Mi you have to stay here". Again, DON"T know how I trained it, so can't communicate it to others. Once again, Emily to the rescue!
This looks great! I need a way to 'undo' an invisible barrier! My chihuahua used to run up and down the stairs with no problem. Went through a time with a bad need (patellar luxation). His knee and activities are back to normal now except for the stairs... he goes down but will NOT go up unless I am behind him and giving occasional treats.
wow!! i can't wait for this tutorial!!! i think my dog will pick up on this fairly easily because we already taught her not to go past the carpet when people are at the door and not to go onto the tile in the laundry room
