  • #1 Cars song.

  • He does say "I am looking at you." Probably looking at a girl. The thing thrown on stage probably didn't phase them. This was the era of live music. Bands always dealt with that kind of thing in their club days. If it bothered them they didn't show it. Total pros! Great version of a great song!

  • Orr is every inch and ounce a rock star

  • Like Ben Orr, my Brother-in-law died of pancreatic cancer a couple of years ago. He and I loved talking music, and he loved talking about the Cars. He got me into the band in '79. Loved them ever since. Here's to you Ed....You are so missed :-)

  • Ben Is Missed!

  • The Cars had a lot of balls to go over to the UK in 1978 and play pop music. This is cool.

  • @02:24... That is fucking awesome... such energy!

  • Sound guy didn't have Greg up in the mix - the cool keyboard parts/tones he brought to the band was such a great part of the sound. Ben one of the the all-time great voices in rock!

  • The more I look at it I think when he says 'I'm looking at you.' He might be talking to the person that just threw something onstage. He looks pissed and I don't think he is talking to a chick in the audience.

  • What a freaking great live take on this song...

  • Ben and Elliot for that moment looking at each other were totally in the slip stream..It was the height of their careers, so young, so happy, so creative..Its a pleasure to watch..The Cars are a great band That ushered in the 80s and so many new bands that followed their unique style..Imitation being the sincerest for of flattery, you are missed Ben..

  • 2:09 = Sound man #fail

  • i <3 the cars, oldschool rockzz! soo cute, my ben. (fave classic band:)

  • I love it when Elliot and Ben do that "bookends" thing face-to-face at the end. Makes me smile every time I see it.

  • they sound great live !

  • Damn they sounded good live

  • Rock on!!!

  • this song reminds me of eating beef jerky when I lived in California when i was a kid....8 or 9 years old......Cali was a cool place.... i thought this song was kewl back then and i still think it's kewl now.....ben orr was kewl too......

  • Wow I came across a pic of Ben Orr's son. Do a search for bostonherald Ben Orr jr. He hung out with the Cars backstage at the House of blues Boston. Rick looks so happy:)

  • anyone notice at 0:34 ad up he say's "im gonna get you", or maybe it was 0:43? doesnt matter, youll see it!

  • @natetheguitarkid yes from what I've read here the crowd was awful to them rowdy & that is why he said I'm gonna get you.

  • @natetheguitarkid right at :34 you can see ben flinch as something is thrown onto the stage - it flies into the left side of the screen.

  • I only meant that Ben is nice to look at with or without music...Goodness.

  • damn, last time i was here this vid oly had a little over 30,000 views!!

  • I wish I had red pants like that.

  • I love the song but it's nice to turn volume off and just watch Ben!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I noticed that too! What a bad ass. And at the end when Ben and Elliot are doing their jam thats cool. Its great you get to see this on the internet.

  • at 45 seconds he lips to some chick in the audience... i bet he made her night

  • @trapt071 Yeah I think he is saying 'I'm looking at you.'

  • @LeeB9999 I thought he was saying "I'm gonna get you" He does looked pissed.

  • @balzysalzy Yes. I think you might be right. He must be pissed at the person that threw something on the stage. He stares in that direction for a bit. That is very impressive to be singing, playing bass and telling something off all at the same time.

  • @LeeB9999 Oh, he is rocking. This is one of the best live performaces I have ever heard. Wish I would have seen them in concert back in the day.

  • @balzysalzy I'm dating myself here but when I was a kid I bought this album on 8 track.

  • @LeeB9999 I remember my parents 8 tracks. All the classics of the 70's. Thanks Mom and Dad for having cool music around the house.

  • my favorite "misheard lyric" song from my youth.

We used to pick up the needle on the record player and play it again and again.

    "Its an orgy sky"

    "always with some other guy"

    "its just a fucking alibi"

once you know the real lyrics, you can't hear him saying that anymore, funny how the mind works. and amazing. Watch Brain Games on Nat Geo. 2 cool.

  • Elliot Easton is more of a god than a man

  • The Cars are awesome and Ben is just fucking cool!

  • Love this song, lead guitar

  • No Wonder Ben went running for the hills!

  • I am learning to play the bass and I just love the lick that Ben is playing starting at 0:11 . I wasn't aware of that lick until I saw the video of The Cars playing this song in France. Ben has amazing fingers and everything else. :-)

    The Cars Rock!

  • And another thing who else could wear red pants and look so cool? Too cool.

  • Ben passed away 11 years ago today. RIP. This is such an awesome video!! These videos are so special thanks for posting!!

  • Benjamin Orr looks like Rod Stewart in this period of time.

  • ONE OF THE BEST BAND'S EVER. GOD BLESS THEM.

  • @MrKkap I Agree! Literally-

  • I always thought he was saying "It's just a fvcking alibi" ... and that's how I sing it to this day ... even though now I now different ...

  • Too awesome!! What a performance happy birthday Ben. The energy lives on!!!

  • Today would be Ben's birthday. 9-8-2008 RIP

  • Thats what made the cars what they were/ both singers had significant roles and I personnally enjoyed both of them the same. The cars will never be the same but still strong and the memories will live in our hearts and on You Tube !

    RIP Benjamin

  • Great concert and videos!! 1978 Cars on the cusp of success beyond there dreams!!!!

  • Elliot is so young in this video. He is rockin out.

I have watched this a number of times, now, and even Ric senses Ben is steamed. It's totally cool. Ben is like in his own little world of pissed while he continues to sing his song.

At the end when he is playing with Elliot, he looks like he is protective of the much younger Elliot. Benjamin was 7 years older than Elliot. (miss you Ben)

  • @JesusFreakJene Elliot was 24 here. Not young to be in a rock band that had just hit.

  • Comment removed

  • @JesusFreakJene Um what are you talking about... how do you know that Ben is pissed?

  • Comment removed

  • they broke the new wave!

  • You can tell that Benjamin Orr is pissed at one the audience members.

It's awesome to see little windows of who he was. Obviously, he was nice, but don't screw with him cuz he would take you outside. What a man!

    (miss you Ben)

  • he would go on to star in blade runner and the hitcher..

  • @TheEarlymtv I hope you're not serious????

  • Elliot Easton fuckin' wails on the guitar

  • For the last time, as several people have stated, around the 45 second mark Ben is saying "I'm watching you" or "I'm going to get you" to someone who threw something. He is not saying it to a cute girl. There were some real jerks in that audience. He is pissed. Watch his expression. Even pissed the man was drop dead gorgeous.

  • @suisuimat You're right,Ben was furious. I am fortunate to have found this show on dvd, and I must say they have shown great professionalism throughout their show. Because the public was really bad.

  • @BabsTen where did you get the dvd?

  • i love Benjamin orr

  • what is he mouthing at :45?

  • The best kept secret for true metal music, these guys ROCK!

  • Last great American band.

  • Rutger Hauer.

  • Wish you could hear the synth more but Ben looks HOT!

  • Wonderful Short Film

  • Lots of awsome talant came out of Ohio!!! Ben will always be my favorite!!!! R.I.P Ben

  • @JetLover737 RIC ALSO SPENT A LARGE CHUNK OF HIS CHILDHOOD IN OHIO

  • As great as this clip is, you can't really here the keyboards which was always my favorite part of this song....but still awesome to see and here. RIP Ben Orr....

  • Intense!!!

  • I never paid much attention to them in the 80s as I was into the harder stuff...I really wish i had...they are MUCH better than I ever realized. I wish I could have seen them live. Ben Orr was simply great!

  • @jpmfresno

I did not remember that Orr was clearly the true Rock Star. The other members are . . awkward at best. Was Orr paid to join this band and kick start their notoriety ?

  • @ChuckLogan Who do you think wrote all these great songs? Ric did most of the writing and while Ben had a great voice, the licks were all Elliott. Greg's keyboards and David's backbeat are as important to the Cars sound as anybody else. It was a perfect band with every member providing an important piece.

  • @buffalobraves9 Agree, they all were very important and contributed equally. They should be in the hall of fame.

  • @ChuckLogan No. Ric and Ben were the first two to get together. They had two other bands, and also performed as an acoustic duo before the Cars. I think the combination was obvious -- Ben had the look and the voice, Ric had the songs. During the time it worked, it incredible. These five had some real chemistry in making this sound.

  • excellent live band...sounds amazing! 1978? omg.

  • @jpmfresno

Yep! They sound awesome here -- even on compressed audio over crappy PC speakers. Imagine being there in the SAME room with them?!?! In front of the amps -- getting the full sonic effect and energy of the sound waves?!?! It would have been awesome to see them live.

  • Rock and roll...

  • Timeless classic...

  • Sorry I shouldn't multi post but I jsut realized after wathcing a few times he has someone picked out in the audience and is singing to them,,....good exercise for calming your nerves....watch him after the first verse - he mouths something to someone that he is singing to....always learn from the greats!

  • @gsoltis29 - If you watch future concerts, you'll see he does the same thing at all of them. Great observation.

  • @Camanthalynn1 wow i didnt know he actually did that .

  • Is he the coolest cat or what? He does not even look nervous...I've been on stage at least a hundred times and I NEVER looked even close to that cool......

  • Please give us more of this wonderful show....Ben is in top form.....

  • Substitution, mass confusion, clouds inside your head!! Ohh, man, I love the Cars. I think they'll always be my favorite band.

  • Wanted: Older model Cars in mint condition!!

  • Benjamin was always the hottest......and OH what a VOICE!! : )

    Miss him dearly.

  • Vote this up if the Super 8 trailer made you watch this video again.

  • What a beautiful man. miss him everyday...

  • Holy crap, Ben really is good. I didn't realize how much awesomeness he is compared to Ric. I still love Ric, but Ben is missed now that I know! :)

  • Bad audience !!!!! But Ben is just beautiful. I love The Cars and I looooooove Ben.

  • Ben Orr is kicking major ass right here!!!! The world sucks for taking such a talented individual!!!!!!

  • I saw The Cars with Cheap Trick in NYC in 1978. What a great show that was.

  • The first definition of the work Perfection should be:Benjamin Orr.This guy had it all.The voice, the looks, the talent, the charm and disposition. One of the best taken way too soon from those that enjoy these guys in their prime. They have paved the way for the New Wave music generation. These guys need to be in the R&RHOF. No question.

  • Dear God: Please give us back Benjamin Orr.

  • @0gems4u it would be nice... :o(

  • @0gems4u God only shares men like Benjamin Orr with us for a short time. I guess it was better to have him for a short time than to have never had him at all. Thank God for videos!

  • @hollyawoods Well said!

  • @hollyawoods never so much a truth has been spoken. Great band, great sound

  • @hollyawoods Wow! what a great comment that's the truth. I believe that's the easiest way to take it. I'm glad we have videos. Thanks for sharing that comment cheers!

  • @0gems4u this a a great tune but the words mean absolutely nothing at all

  • From the insert sleeve inside the CD's:

"The Cars"....c 1978, all songs written by Ric Ocasek except 'Moving in Stereo', written by Ocasek AND Hawkes.

"Candy-O"...c 1979, all songs written by Ric Ocasek.

  • elliot eastman has to be one of the most under-noticed, under-rated guitarist, i thought he was brilliant, his leads were great in everyway, all classics...

  • @MOSKII58 It's Elliot Easton....but I agree with your assessment! Very crisp, clean, and perfectly placed lead licks...even if they never did seem to last long enough...not for my taste anyway. ;-)

  • @TruthAxe Ric Ocasek wrote every song on this, the debut album, as well as the second album Candy-O. Better without him? The Cars wouldn't have even existed without him.

  • @dtmjax Except Ocasek didn't write every song on the debut album, but that's OK, you meant well in your metaphorical fellatio performance of Ric Ocasek.

Exactly, the Cars wouldn't have existed without Ocasek. You write as if that would have been a bad thing.

  • @dtmjax Ric was overly controlling; in an interview with Elliot Easton (2006):

On the original version of Door To Door, production is credited to Ric Ocasek, but on the CD reissue, production credited to both Ric Ocasek and Greg Hawkes. Why is that?

EE: It was supposed to originally have been produced by Ric and Greg, but for reasons that I prefer not to get into, Greg didn’t get his credit on the album like he should have. But it was something that was redressed later on for the CD reissue.

  • Ric Ocasek wrote this song, along with nearly every other song that The Cars made. He had Ben Orr sing on it. That's not revisionism in any way.

Ben and Ric had been friends since childhood, and they stayed that way until 2000.

  • The Cars would have been much better without Ric Ocasik and Gregg Hawkes. Those cheesy late 70s synth fills pull away from what could have been a great song.

Ocasik was dead wood who held the band back.

  • @TruthAxe that's interesting opinion, most loved his quirky voice, but who knows they may have been better or at least different..i always thought Ben Orr was the talent of the band..

  • @TruthAxe Are you fucking retarded... saying The Cars would be a better band without Ric Ocasek and Gregg Hawkes is like saying The Beatles would be better without John Lennon and George Harrison.

  • You amuse, @spaceorbison. Mere words triggered you into out of control rage, so much so that you had to express the phrase "are you retarded" though you forgot to include a question mark.

So, who is retarded here? Is it the one whose words owned your mind, controlled you and manipulated you into a freak out or is it you?

    Oh how you amuse.

  • @TruthAxe you sound like a sociopath. Whatever satisfaction you think you're getting just get it out of your head bro, you're not manipulating anyone and what you said is just about the stupid thing I've ever heard, that's the only thing that has owned me... your fucking incredible stupidity.

  • You amuse, @spaceorbison. Again! My words are the strngs, and you, spaceorbison, are my little marionette. I pull and you dance. Look at you go!

You're so manipulated my little dancing marionette that you have danced twice now to my string pulling. HA HA HA

And to show you how stupid you are about music, the arrangement of songs for a Cars line-up sans Hawkes and Ocasik would sound different, better. You've never heard a rock version of a reggae song? Dummy.

  • @TruthAxe Ok Mr. Mental you're just controlling me all over the place I better just leave now haha >.>

  • 0:43 SEXY I don't know nor care who he was talking to they're one lucky ass person because i would love for him to say that to me!

  • Comment removed

  • He is staring at Valerie Bertinelli in the audience and says, "i am gonna get you" it's in her bio. Also, Rick Okasek didnt like anyone in the band smiling during a performance and that is why he stares at him and they glance at each other.

  • @romancemodel1 There's another video of this with some extra in the beginning that has audience chatter before they start this song. There's some guy yelling "Get off you bastards". At around 0:35 something gets thrown in Benjamin's direction and he blinks. Benjamin looks at Ric and then he says "I'm going to get you"!!! to whoever the moron was that threw whatever at him!! If you listen to Benjamin's tone of singing and his body language you can see he's pretty pissed off!! Bad audience.

  • @sposatenore And you know Ben's looking dead at the asswipe who threw something. Oh yeah, the body language tells it. Ben was pissed !

  • @romancemodel1 That is not true. There was never anything with Benjamin and Valerie.

  • I always loved Ben's vocals on this one. This and Drive I think are my two favorite Cars songs. Amazing how much respect and love Ben Orr still gets on these Cars pages. He really was a great singer and presence. Sorry he's gone.

  • Read on another site last night, that someone had thrown something at him and that's who he was mouthing to.

  • Ben's vocals are amazing here and in all their live performances...I don't know another band that can pull off what and how The Cars sound live! This is music and phenomenal music at that. As an avid fan, I will say I prefer most of their songs live due to the intensity and strength of Ben's vocals and the band. They deserve to be in the Hall of Fame unlike most who lip sync and are puppets of the industry.

  • @lovebenorr Yes!

    Was so touched to hear how much Ben is missed by his bandmates, The Cars. {in Rolling Stone, 3/ 2011}

And how Rick always gave "the song" to the guy who could really sing, to Ben!

What a sweetheart of a man, not to mention, ADORABLE!!!

    So adorable....

  • @porcelaincougar : kind of a crock Ric saying that: If it were true Ben would have sung EVERY Cars song. In fact, I was always disappointed that Ric hogged so many vocals when they would have been so much better if he had, in fact, given them to the guy that could really sing...B.E.N. I think Ric's mind is making amends with itself and he should have said, I WISH I had given the songs...etc. I don't blame you though, Ric, for trying to rewrite your history in your mind.

  • @salee320 Couldn't agree with you more. I'm sure to this day they,{ Ric and the boys,} can't believe he's gone.

Nor can I for that matter...

  • @lovebenorr : kind of a crock Ric saying that: If it were true Ben would have sung nearly every Cars song. In fact, I was always disappointed that Ric hogged so many vocals when they would have been so much better if he had, in fact, given them to the guy that could really sing...B.E.N. I think Ric's mind is making amends with itself and he should have said, I WISH I had given the songs...etc. I don't blame you though, Ric, for trying to rewrite your history in your mind, cuz you loved him

  • Fuckin genius song!

  • this is just a kick ass song , ben orr was incredible

  • Outstanding band live

  • Ben fires the sound man at 00:45 LOL!

  • @alohamrhnd - Ben mouths "I'm looking at you" or I'm going to get you". Then he gives an intense stare.

  • @mr5time48 thanks!! now I can see it, I think it's "I'm looking at you"...God that part makes my heart skip a beat :D

  • the keyboard player, i swear he is "WORMSER" from revenge of the nerds.... good player though...he is a dead wringer, until he changed his look, someone must have spilled the beans, asked him for his wormser autograph!!.. i love Robinsond drumming, very solid he knows just what to play and what not to play i hate busy drummers..

  • @MOSKII58 he was the drummer from the original modern lovers several years prior to this. they are exhilarating, and deserve everyone's attention. his playing was stellar throughout.

  • Bad sound or not, Ben killed this song in this video. Any idea what he mouths after he sings "electric angel rock & roller, I hear what you're playing"?

  • @alohamrhnd thats what it sounds like to me... then he goes into "It's an orangey sky, always it's some other guy ....it's just a broken alibi, bye bye love etc..

  • @alohamrhnd looks like he's saying "i'm gonna kill you" watch it again

  • @westrokker I could be wrong, it looks more like "I'm gonna get you" which could be in anger or something else. Either way, great vid.

  • Man, he was so great. Missed. Agree with the guy talking about the keyboard screw up, but very good for the time.

  • my god,that man looked good,and what a voice

  • Were was this at ?

  • THE CARS GIVE ME EARGASMS!!!! :P

  • @12monkeys55555 gross

  • @supersonic666666 Supersonic, What the hell?.............. You can't imagine that music could be so awsome that your ears(BRAIN) could have an orgasm?

  • @12monkeys55555 i pictured someone with cum coming out of their ears when i read that...

  • @supersonic666666 Hi! That would be gross :(

  • A bad sound man can really put a hurting on a band. I can't tell you how many times a sound man has ruined our shows. This individual totally screwed Greg's keyboards. This is a great, great video and Ben is sorrowfully missed. GOD BLESSED US WITH THE CARS!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Great tune!!!

    Un gran tema!!!

  • now this is the cars

  • ORR COULD DO NO WRONG!!!! I KNOW HE IS ROCKING IN A WAY BETTER PLACE NOW......RIP BENJAMIN, YOU TRULY ARE MISSED<3

  • wow this is amazing! always regreted not seeing them live -- ben is so hot hot hot! be still my heart!

  • Orr was a GREAT front man for this band. I think it's fine they share lead vocals, but Benjamin's songs were in my opinion, the best. What a Rocker!

  • The soundman BADLY missed on the synth's volume. Hawkes's synth is key (no pun intended) in this song.
