I am in grade 10 and can't multiply or divide properly and I learned to read the time a lot later then other kids, when I was 12. I do sometimes count with my fingers and I have trouble adding large numbers together on the spot. And I hate going to the shops cause I don't know how much change there will be and stuff. I have recently discovered that dyscalculia exists and I don't want to tell my parents that I might have it cause I don't want them to think I'm stupid :/
In primary school they said I had a "building block missing" In secondary school I got reffered to an educational phycologist, of whom diagnossed me with dyscalculia.
I'm the same with all off these problems mentioned, my dilema is I want to be a physicist which needs alot of math *sigh*
You're not stupid if you have dyscalculia. I'm an A* student. (granted not in math) But i'm working at a B!
My son has dyscalculia, people do not understand how much the person has to actually deal with, it is nowhere near the same as dyslexia and teachers are not trained properly on this condition. WE NEED MORE AWARENESS!!!
I really like your video. I to have dyscalculia. I sometimes transpose numbers and right them down wrong. I have learned to catch myself. I am bad with time. I usually get places really early as I take public transportation and don't know how long it will take. I am also bad when shopping like you. I can never know how much I need. The only time I get it is at a dollar store. It's good to find someone who also has this.
im severely dyscalcuilc i was diagnosied at and early age im glad im not alone and im EH i have i hard time processing word problems simple grade scool math really easy math CAKE WALK when i see it or hear it it does not register math numbers confuse me alot im working on getting a ged
i HAVE to have this, not as bad but slight, i had a horrible time learning subtraction and negatives and time, i still cant do negative numbers. i HAVE to have a calculator, problems with direction, i could never do compass work, this HAS to be what I have, not as bad as you, but i have to have a problem....
Thank you so much for your bravery to share all about dyscalculia. I started homeschooling my son two years ago and have felt like a huge failure because I cannot teach him basic math. You are helping me understand why he doesn't get it! God Bless you!
I'm an adult student studying to be a special ed teacher, and I also have a learning disorder. My professor showed our whole class your video tonight as we were learning about dyscalculia. You are awesome! You do a great job explaining it, and making it inspirational to other kids with LD as well!
Also, may I ask; how does dyscalculia progress? Do you need support to live independently, etc? How do you get by? I'm just kind of interested, since I have autis & learning difficulties, & to hear how you cope & manage would be good.
@ChocolateisIsNice Im not really sure how to answer these questions. I think I do need a little support as my grilfriend has to do quite alot of things for me in the planning of day to day chores and remembering important events as my memory is terrible. My concept of time is also aweful and I dont seem to remember quite urgent things sometimes. I have no idea how I cope and manage ... I guess its because I dont know any different :P
I'm have high functioning autism & Learning Difficulties & I can relate to a lot of the things you've said. I do have a terrible sence of direction, I am terrible at looking after things, I find keeping track of my money hard, but I don't really have much of a problem with normal clocks. I do actually find digital clocks more difficult. You said in this video that this was going to be a series, but you haven't put any other disability videos up. What other disabilities do you have?
Hey dude, you may have dyscalculia but you have great communication skills and have produced a great video that is positive and encouraging. I have dyslexia and some brain damage and have just been told I may have dyscalculia too. The stuff you said about timekeeping and not being able to understand a regular clock is totally what I am like! stay positive and I know you will do great in life. Take care
Does anyone know if there is counseling in the US for people like us. I'm 39 and I have so many emotional scars due to this condition. Especially since they were just learning about dyslexia when I was growing up. Dyscalculia hadn't been named yet and dyslexia was thought to be a boy's disability and not to affect girls. I Have both, but the dyscalculia is far worse. I was labeled "borderline retarded" Then when my reading skills took off I was suddenly a savant!
I have dyscalculia too and other learning difficulities.. And my middle school doctor was like " wow I've never heard of dyscalculia and no one in our school have ever had that". And I got so sad and scared... This is kind of scary cause much of you tell in this video is really like me! I'm 16 and this is new for me.. Wow.. My friends at my school says I have to work much harder and I just break out in tears when I get home cause they just don't understand..(sorry for my bad english)
Wow I love the video, I can relate to pretty much everything you're saying. I was diagnosed with mild dyscalculia when I was 17 and I found it difficult to deal with. Now I'm learning how to get through every day life with the condition, I was angered at the teachers in my school because they didn't know what discalculia was and made me feel stupid. No support was offered either. People need to realise it's just another form of dyslexia and not a made up thing.
When I was in college, I was diagnosed with dyscalculia and I was failing math very badly. When I told my math professors, they had no clue what I was talking about, as a matter of fact, they never believed me until they looked it up.
I'm 28 and still do math problems by counting on my fingers because I can't count hardly at ALL in my head. And pretty much everything else in this video describes me
I am tested for dyscalculia in April too. But when I saw this video it sounds exactly like me, except for the analogue clock. I can tell the time, luckly.
Sounds just like me especially counting on fingers and not being able to read analogue clocks. It also takes me a lot longer than other people to answer even simple sums
@XxRubberDuckyGirlxX haha i dont say anything defensive or say im dyscalculaic because i dont like to blaim my mistakes on it. A friend of mine blaims everything bad he does on his dyspraxia and i feel uneasy like he is getting out of all responsibily for his actions. I have no idea what i say as i just make it up on the fly really :D
Thanks for helping to inform the masses! I loved your video, honesty and humor. I recently found out that I am also Dyscalculic when I did some research on Dyslexia to help my son who is eight. Now I believe he probably has both of the "D's". His dad is Dyslexic. There is a great video titled "Discovering Dyscalculia" onYoutube that has some real help. I had to laugh when you talked about bumping in to things. I am well known as a clutz. All this time I thought I was just extra "blonde"!
I'm dislexic and i have ocd i can't read books i have to use audiobooks but i want to be an accountant i'v being ok with maths just i alwayys suck at reading so when my teahcer asks me to read so many chapters in a books i can't pick it up ever. Its really annoying alot of the time and it makes my ocd worse and my confidence has gone down the pan abit too.
Thanks for cheering me up ^^ I've been feeling dumb because I never could get maths no matter how long I've been sitting at home and trying to learn even the basics and I just couldn't XD And I've been feeling dumb because I couldn't do watches with hands either =O So many people tried to help me learn that watch but I couldn't so it's nice to hear that actually I'm not dumb even though I still feel like it a bit ^^ Take care ^.~
I'm with you - I've had dyscalculia all my life and can't think of ANY advantage to having it. So much of the stuff it effects in your life are things that people are just SUPPOSED to be able to do, like read a clock or balance your checkbook. If you can't do those things, people just think you're just dumb, when really you're not.
I couldn't read analogue clocks either. I actually figured out how time is measured (on my own) at the age of 9, when somebody got me a digital watch XD
Oh man, I know how it is trying to tell time. I was at an appointment last week and I actually had to ask the woman at the counter to tell me the time because I couldn't read it (it was an analogue clock).
Hey can forgetting birthdays and ages could be realated to dyscalcuia. I can't remember my brother's, mom's or my brothers ages. My friends and family get upset b/c I don't remember their birthdays. Anything with numbers flip my mind.
I also hate playing games like with cards. for examples spades, polka or tongue. I can't do the simpliest math problems. I always had to repeat every math class.
Lets make sure we are not focusing on the hits and ignoring the misses though. It is very easy to misdiagnose one's self as a result of this phenomena.
holy shit.. I relate to this 100 % ... that blows lol. I made a 5 facts video, in one of them I mention my issues with numbers, I will post it as a video response, I would like to know if you can relate to the numbers and direction issues.
I also could relate, I have all these symtoms. I stopped going to college b/c of math. I got tutors and all. But nothing! helped!!! The sad part of this all is that I only have math courses left for my degree. But b/c of this video, I am going to get help and go back to college. Thank god I finally found out!!! After all these years!
It made me smile, not of him, but because have a diagnose called `Psedou dyscalculia` which is almost the same, and in some of what he said, I did recognize myself... :)
Oh well, I am coping fine today, even though I do sometimes struggle, I do have a positive attitude towards it - Cause I believe that you can do whatever you want - and there are so many ways of finding the right way for you to accomplish your goal - That`s to you all out there, who struggles with all the numbers! :)
i have dyscalcuila to and i have realy trubble with mathproblems and alittle bitt of spelling hehe its weard because i can spell like a gead A student when it comes to english but spelling in my own language im hopless
and losing things! I got through three pairs of scissors just wrapping up a present because I couldn't remember where I'd put them down. That's just not right, wrapping up presents shouldn't be evil!
I wonder many suffers mention their difficultly reading analog, though it took me longer to learn I'm ok with that but I have to count up in order to read digital so maybe that's just not related. But sometimes I'll look at a clock and read it wrong, like an hour ahead.
Once past 20 I need to use my fingers, times tables no I can't just remember them, I have to add them up to work them up.
loll im the same as u i cant tell time either and like all the stuff u mentioned im the same.. how do u know when u have it like.. who told u that u had it a doctor or something? loll i dont kno
that was good:]. i will definitely going to thank my professor for putting your link in to the syllabus, i enjoyed watching u - u r cute ;). i will have my exam tomorrow - wish me luck. and good luck with your Disabilities
You brought a huge smile to my face today! Many hugs! I previously felt like crying because I have a paper to write and its a miserable task for me. I myself am a "stealth dyslexic" I get though my work with much pain lol. I had to laugh like crazy when you referred to that as your users manual. I felt the same way with the whole stealth dyslexic info when I first read it! I try to keep in mind the positives its just frustrating because I feel dumb all the time but I know I am smarter O.o?
By-the-way I am so with you on the whole right and left thing! MADE ME FEEL AWESOME! I can tell the difference sometimes, but mostly when someone refers to either direction my brain just fritzes out and I just pick one way or freeze. Once my ceramics teacher told me to put more pressure on my right (or left) hand and I just stopped what I was doing and starred at my hands. Getting though my drivers exam was a nightmare. I had to focus on right and left the entire time instead of my driving.
I believe I have this, only I have a good sense of direction (probably because I still live where I grew up) and I dont have a problem reading clocks. I have the problems with measurments, spacial awareness, absentmindedness. What you said about putting something down in one room and 5 seconds later forgetting where you put it cracked me up. We have a saying in my house when something is lost: Its in one of 5 places. Meaning there are numerous dumping grounds around my house where I put stuff.
Loved the video! Good sense of humor also lol. Definitely suffer from the exact same thing and am battling with MSU right now over their "accomodations"...ya right ha!
why do you need a paper to check in forward each of the 'signs'? Looks a bit fake. I am dyscalculic and if I'd have to talk about my troubles I wouldn't need to check it out all the time.
Plus I really hope that there will be some vid. about positive stuff not only deficites of being dyscalculic.
Thanks for giving me an insight into this but try to be a bit serious, becuase many people are watching this especially kids. For the first time try to stay focus and not got off to many tangents. I would be good to know where one can go to be tested thanks.
I can't read an analogue clock. I have a few problems with basic math. I can't count in my head, need to count using my fingers. I've ticked all these boxes, and I work in retail, meaning that i use maths on a daily basis!! This review has been really helpful. Thanks mate!
you do not know how much your video helped me right now.. you just described my life.. and I am just realizing I definitely have what you have.. an never realized it until now :(
it bothered me though... it put me down and mede me think I am stupid
well im no longer living at that house and i dont have a PC ... so its on hold for the time being. But I am going to do more when i get all the equipment.
Thank you for posting this video...it was informative and inspiring...could you address how dyscalculia or your other learning 'differences' impact your adult life (i.e. driving, living independently, employment etc.) I worry about my 13 year old son who has many of the issues you have struggled with...thanks for sharing!
Is there any help for adults with this condition. I'm nearly 36 and I have just discovered why I can't find my way around, why I can't count, why I can't play an instrument. Is there are organisation in the U.K. for this condition.
I have some things alike, I think you have confused some concepts, remembering things and orientation is not part of your dyscalculia. There is a psychologyst, freuenstein, that can help you with that. A strict parent too. Not too sure about the numbers though seems like very stressing. What do you do when you go to the mall, just pay with credit. How do you manage your account?
A 135 IQ or higher is shared by fewer than 1 in every 100 people, and qualifies you to join Mensa, if they approve of the test you took. Thanks for the video. I'm trying to work out if I have dyscalculia as a separate condition or if it's just caused by ADHD (because maths requires longer explanations than other subjects, sums need short-term memory, remembering names and faces involves noticing details, coordination requires focus and patience etc.). Guess I'll find out when I'm medicated!
I have dyslexia, but i am also absoluty hopeless with number, i still can't quite belive that everything you menchend achooly does aplie to me esspechally the bit abot haveing to cout useing fingers i get a lot of stick for that. and it is totlal true we're not think i have a above average IQ as well. by the way u'r IQ is pritty high, the average is 100, i think.
Where are my f&%#&& cigarretes? lighter uh uh where are you? Does anyone in this place seen my cellular phone i can´t remember where i left the nasty bastard, and my keys? oh no! shit shit shit! i need the keys i can´t leave with out them! Now i'm gonna be late!help!
sorry for my english, i have issues learning english grammar as well
Numbers swim in my head(and some other dyscalculia traits you mentioned), but compared to you, I feel like I can manage alright. You seem like a pretty cool guy just the same.
I think i have Dyscalculia... I've always struggled with math in school, and it has really hurt my education, and my life. It's nice to know there are people who can relate to me.
(Continued from previous comment--it couldn't fit so I had to send another) What is that? Does it have something to with Sensory Integration Dysfunction (I read about it since I realized that textures, patterns, and contrasting color patterns/textures drive me NUTS!) If you have email, could you leave that so I could talk to you about these issues? Cause nobody else seems to know what I'm talking about. Thanks! BTW: Gread Vid! ;oP
I didn't even notice you poked fun at Americans--I'm American and personally, if you had, cursing you out for it would have nothing to do with the "Meat & Potatoes" of the dyscalculia video. So, I think everyone here needs to just shut up and stop going on a psychotic rant about the "Alleged" -- and I use that term loosely--America comment. Now, I may have dyscalculia, and I have alot of your issues you mentioned--question: What about that thing with issues with textures in your profile?
It's so agravsting that the school board doesn't reconize it, and because it's not that well known-people diagnose you with Aspergers.
The reason why? You get nervous in public.
But the reason for this is because, well, it's God damn embarrising when your counting money, don't know where to go sometimes, get time mixed up. UGGGGGG!
At least I'm right brained though. Thanks to the right brain, I can remember stuff in history, hole childhood, and am A-Ok with music-but the notes are DOOM!
i'm 15 + was severely dyscalculic when i was younger but gradually have improved, dyscalculia isn't a death sentence, if you tell yourself it's dibilitating, it always will be.
hey this is great! i just learned of dyscalculia yesterday (at 28 yrs old), and I was thinking like "well it all fits but I can eventually figure most of these things out when I think about them". But now I see that I may be wrong, like the thing you did with "let's go right" when you meant left, I do the same thing and I have to think about it first,it's just that I think very quickly but I have to make a conscious effort.same with "yesterday/tomorrow" etc
I really want to thank you for posting this video, and I would love to actually talk to you. I have only recently discovered that I have dyscalculia. I just am so glad to see another "normal" person out there with a disability. I used to feel that I was all alone, not like the others I went to school with but not like many of the other special needs students as well. I always assumed that this was just how I was but, I want to tell you im just glad im not alone. Thanks so much for that.
hey, i have dyscalculia too. Well,,, Everything you describe in the video is me too. Especially remembering names, really terrible at that, counting on my fingers, no mental maths, bashing into things constantly! urgh! people always say "ahh watch yourself, are you ok" and i just go yeah yeah, I'm fine. lol
Studying film n tv in ireland. I hav some vids on youtube as well, check em out.
Nice 1 for making the vid. Good to know people will get a better understanding of dyscalculia.
Hi. I found your video when I did a search on youtube for dyscalculia. I have the same problems you pointed out; I also can't drive a car (bad spatial awareness or whatever its called). It's nice to know that there are actually people out there like me! :)
I have Irlen's Syndrome and possibly have Dyscalculia(I dispaly all the classic symptoms). When you or I get a maths problem correct it is from memory, not working it out.
ohhhh i dont know about that myself ... i can work out simple sums pretty well its just the more complex things like times tables and devision and then i get stuck
i have it too, but i never knew until know...people always called me stupid, and i have huge problems when counting or using money... Thx brother, make this world more understanding
I have the same list printed out and I have EVERY SINGLE ONE of these symptoms (ok, except not being able to remember names). I'm getting tested this month for Dyscalculia! It's so great to see someone who has it, just to have someone I can relate to.
ahh you found the list too then ... good to see your getting tested ... they tested me for learning diffaculties and they were surprised to find a few :P
So do I!!!! I am glad I am not alone. But I'm wondering if it has anything to do with my adhd. Your lucky you found out at 15 b/c I recently found out.
OMG thank you so much. Althrough school they labled me "learning disabled" but teasted me for dyslexia and came out negative every time. Your video makes soooo much sence! I can believe they didn't find this before. Every single thing you've said I can relate too.
I have Dyscalculia too! i know how it is,if you have any learning disability, ppl think your stupid, ppl are so ignorant to sit down and think about what Dyscalculia is all about and the fact you are born with it! anyways, ppl with LD are mort likely to have aabove average IQ anyways! and ironially,im going into the fireld of accounting while i have this disability, all I need is my best frend is the calculator ad i can get tru :D
using a calculator may help you but it confuses the hell out of me even when i use one i get wrong answers its really hard for me to have this disability also i have touretts syndrome which makes things even more complicated for me with the whole learning arithmetic and the whole ticking process but im glad you posted a video thanks mate
oh dude im glad you liked the video ... mayeb you should do a vid on your touretts so people know more about that too ... cos even i have to admit my knowlage of it is a little lacking.
I just watched your video and I have to say I can relate to so much of what you're saying. I probably have dyscalculia too, but I've never been diagnosed. I especially relate to the clock thing. Never could read analog clocks and I always have to wear a digital watch because I won't know what time it is if I don't.
If I can ask... what are you doing for a career? Cause, obviously retail never worked out for me(and probably not for you, either). Hah. I had a total meltdown at the cash register... and finally, FINALLY I settled on being a MASSAGE THERAPIST which has nothing to do with math. I'd love to make a dyscalculic-friendly list of career possibilities sometime. heehee.
Im a student studying Media Production ... ive never had a job because i cant seem to get the motivation plus in mot sure theyd want someone so clumbsy doing anything AND im also colourblind which also liits my options somewhat. I did do Imfomation Tech corses for 3-4 years so i DO know quite a bit about PCs if that helps :P
I was diagnosed a few years ago with a "math processing disorder" and CAPD so I understand a bit of what you're going through. I couldn't read a clock with hands and memorize my times tables until I was in fifth grade. It can be so frustrating at times as I still can't remember my times tables ( especially if I haven't done math for a while) by route memorization so I have to use a calculator.
You're the cutest dyscalculic eVAR. I really appreciate what you said at the end of this vid, too. It meant something to me, cause I deal with the whole "I'm stupid" complex every day generally. :D
I am in grade 10 and can't multiply or divide properly and I learned to read the time a lot later then other kids, when I was 12. I do sometimes count with my fingers and I have trouble adding large numbers together on the spot. And I hate going to the shops cause I don't know how much change there will be and stuff.

Lstar07 1 year ago
I'm with you - I've had dyscalculia all my life and can't think of ANY advantage to having it. So much of the stuff it effects in your life are things that people are just SUPPOSED to be able to do, like read a clock or balance your checkbook. If you can't do those things, people just think you're just dumb, when really you're not.
sensualmagick 1 year ago
I couldn't read analogue clocks either. I actually figured out how time is measured (on my own) at the age of 9, when somebody got me a digital watch XD

Hey can forgetting birthdays and ages could be realated to dyscalcuia. I can't remember my brother's, mom's or my brothers ages. My friends and family get upset b/c I don't remember their birthdays. Anything with numbers flip my mind.
naty86able 2 years ago 2
Yes it is. Its the same for me. I guess its because dyscalculia effects the long term memory and anything with numbers.
theurbansoul 2 years ago
I also hate playing games like with cards. for examples spades, polka or tongue. I can't do the simpliest math problems. I always had to repeat every math class.

Lets make sure we are not focusing on the hits and ignoring the misses though. It is very easy to misdiagnose one's self as a result of this phenomena.

Oh well, I am coping fine today, even though I do sometimes struggle, I do have a positive attitude towards it - Cause I believe that you can do whatever you want - and there are so many ways of finding the right way for you to accomplish your goal - That`s to you all out there, who struggles with all the numbers! :)

Meaning there are numerous dumping grounds around my house where I put stuff.

savedbygrace1972 3 years ago
I have some things alike, I think you have confused some concepts, remembering things and orientation is not part of your dyscalculia. There is a psychologyst, freuenstein, that can help you with that. A strict parent too. Not too sure about the numbers though seems like very stressing. What do you do when you go to the mall, just pay with credit. How do you manage your account?

hmmm meny books said that my lack of a mental map and my bed memory were part of it but maybe its part of my dyslexia or dyspraxia ... i dont know

Thanks to the right brain, I can remember stuff in history, hole childhood, and am A-Ok with music-but the notes are DOOM!

hey this is great! i just learned of dyscalculia yesterday (at 28 yrs old), and I was thinking like "well it all fits but I can eventually figure most of these things out when I think about them". But now I see that I may be wrong, like the thing you did with "let's go right" when you meant left, I do the same thing and I have to think about it first,it's just that I think very quickly but I have to make a conscious effort.same with "yesterday/tomorrow" etc
