I always enjoy hearing your opinion and I appreciate you so generously sharing your tips, advice, etc. You have a great personality and I can tell you are a very genunine person. God Bless.

  • I agree

  • You are so right about the hand and face thing. Some people even do it on the wrist : / For medium to darker skin women I read that a strip of the foundation should be drawn vertically down jawline towards the neck (if that makes sense) when testing to see if it is the correct one.

  • thank you for turning me on to make up forever

  • No problem!

  • u r o pretty

  • Thanks!!!

  • lol i put my foundation on my guy friends face and he ate it.

    lol

  • MYGOD!

    Ure so funny!

  • if i go to a mac counter will they do a good job at matching for a foundation and is that a good brand to use on black skin

  • yes, and yes

  • Yes & Yes

  • i have been watching thank you for the tips about natural light. How do I learn about my undertones. I can i choose

  • I love your tips...especially the one about going outside in the natural light to see your true foundation color.

  • your remark on checking in actual-natural-daylight-outdoors is absolutely on point, also: what we see on one computer screen will be different from another screen & different from what the camera (video/photo) records & different from the person-in-person in different kinds of lighting - bcuz cameras & monitors don't handle light the way our human eyeballs do - so I'm saying, yes, go in person to a place you can get samples & check it in daylight... great tut!! great topic for a series!!

  • love you! u actually take the time to explain things... its like u care! lol :)

  • Hey there ! I gotta say, I think you have one of the best makeup channel on Youtube - I love your videos.

I do have a question though, which might sound kind of stupid or out-there.. anyway, I'm caucasian and light-skinned and I have trouble finding a perfect foundation. About undertones : I know there's beige, yellow, red.... is it possible to have blue undertones ? Is it possible, just very seldom ?

    Thanks in advance !

  • @ LovelyRitaSinging

Thats not at all a stupid question! :)

I would think that having blue undertones like you have been seeing might mean you have pink undertones. The reason i say this is because having yellow undertones makes the blood vessels that you can see (usually on your wrist)will show up green, and they will look blue if you have pink undertones, :) i hope this helps you.

  • Excellent tut!!

  • you've helped me a lot thanx! I'm off to check ur blog now xx

  • wow i didn't even know your hand isn't 100% sure the color of your skin. i tried that the other day but it matched my hand but i wasnt sure if it matched my face but i didnt know if i would be able to get a sample because i was at walmart.

  • Would you be able to look at my skin tone and tell me what undertones I am and what would be a good MAC full coverage foundation for me? I have combo skin and alot of blemishes so I will need a concealer too. Thx!

  • Erin, I want to know if you have both warm and cool undertones, how do u determine which foundation to use an NC or an NW? The reason I ask is bcuz the MUA stated I was an NC50 but i have seen tutorials where women who were of a lighter complexion than myself were using NC50...so I dont think that is my true shades. Any thoughs? Also so the foundation also match your neck area?

  • i think prescriptives is better than mac 4 brown skin bc u can get it custom blended 4 your complexion where as mac doesn't have that.

  • Thx for the tips this really helps go outside into natural light I feel dumb it's like common sence. I think you should get your own show on tv or something LOL. Anyway thx again.

  • Wow what you said about paying more for better quality is soo true. I just started doing this with hair products I stoped using the cheaper brands and it made a world of differance. I'm not a huge make-up girl but I always ware foundation and lip gloss but drug store brands are longer doing the trick for me so I'm going to go with your advice and go for a higher end foundation for starts. Thanks for the help. One more thing I have no clue where to start what brand you recommend for a beginner.

  • all I know is that I am mexican, I have no idea what color I am.

  • haha that was funny lol I feel you!

  • You are very knowledgable about what brown skin women need and there lack of. Do you ever think about creating your own line? I would totally purchase your products

  • I have been pleased w/ the blushes that you've recommended. I'd like to try some brands of liquid foundation. It would be helpful to have a shade conversion of MAC shades to other makeup shades. I was unsucessfully color matched at Sephora. The MA used MUFE HD #177. My face is usually lighter than my neck but the #177 made my face 2 shades darker than my neck. MAC NW43 is a good match. MAC NW43 with a tiny touch of NC45 mixed in is near perfect. Any suggests?

  • I have heard in passing through the years that when visiting the MU counter and you are not sure about foundation/eyeshadow/lipstick, etc. find the MUA that looks like you complexion/tone/eyes/hair etc. and let them walk you through their routine 9 out of 10 times it works and yes two more things, natural light (so true) like testing new shoes on hard surface not carpet for fit/comfort and use your face (keep it sanitary) because that's where its going. Great vid, Erin.

  • Think I found the perfect shade, just got a bunch of makeup from Steelo Cosmetics (made for women of color), color matches perfectly, but don't know how to put on the mineral makeup. Do you have a tutorial on mineral makeup?

  • You are so right about going outside in the natural light. I was sold an NC40 and tried to use it at home and looked like Casper the friendly Ghost.

  • you know what samething happen to me. The first time I went to MAC to get matched I was told I was a NC 40 or could be a NC42, so to play it safe I went w/NC 42, well at home I started to notice it was to yellow for me, so I went back and got NC40, but now it makes me look too white-ish. So I'm confused >_> I am mexican american, so I'm still looking for a good foundation.

  • Definitely should try Steelo Cosmetics, foundation colors are WONDERFUL. Great range for women of color.

  • thanks!

  • Okay, so I forgot to add this small request, I'm looking for a bedroom eyes look to wear on my anniversary, maybe in blue or red. I'd really appreciate a little help there. a small tutorial maybe. thanks

  • I also have a question: Does only mac make paint pots because I've been looking and the only ones I can find are mac ones. and what can I use instead?

  • you can try Benefits' long wear eyeshadow pots, something like that, they look like paint pots, but i dont know if they work the same.

  • My tones, change with the weather, sometimes I have yellow tones and sometimes red tones. And I completely don't use foundations, I've always had pretty good skin and am kinda afraid to jack that up. As I get older I notice I have to work for it harder with my skin, I don't want to play myself by adding anything that's going to mess my skin up.

  • Great video, the going outside tip to test your foundation is amazing as the lighting in my closest mac counter is really dim i think. I really like the Bobbi Brown, Oil free foundation, it works amazingly however it highlights dryness =/ I really hated Mac mineralize liquid foundation, it seemed to slide off my face within an hour so i wouldn't recommend that one

  • Great Video! Yes I heard great things about Make Up Forever. They only carry in certain Sephora's. I am so glad you mentioned the difference in quality. I have heard drug store make up is as good as dept. I so don't agree. Example compare HIP to Fluid line. Big difference!!

  • have u ever tried prescriptives custom blend foundaiton?

  • I have several african american clients and im always trying to learn more so i can later teach them....this video really helps me out THANK YOU SO MUCH :)

  • lolol.. I thgt I was the only crazy person that went outside to ck the color... lol

  • once apon a time maybaline dream matte moose was amy hg foundation..but i'm older now and it just dosent look as good as it used to on my skin..so i had to stop using it. i think the older you get the mor eyou wil have to invest in foundation..the drugstore drnads just flat out dont work after a while.. at least not for me.

  • Hmmm, that's a really good theory!!! I'd have to personally agree.

  • Love you Girlie!

    that was so helpful

    Thanks

  • PART3 maybe you can watch his video (something about foundation or bad ingredients). i´´m little bit unsure about that. same about silikons. IT WOULD BE SO NICE IF YOU COULD FIND TIME TO ANSWER personally or in a video. thank you so much ad greetings from berlin. vivien

  • PART2 (which act like a shild on the face and can cause so called mallorca acne, because the shild produces heat under the skin, which can not breath under that....)

  • PART1

dear erin, i have a very important question: what do you know about the incis in mac foundations? ESPECIALLY about mineral oils aka paraffinum liquidum aka petrolium aka PEG/desiterate etc.? the makeupartist christopher drummond (also here at you tube) said in one of his videos, that we don´t need to wonder about "bad" skin if we use studio fix fluid, because of that mineral oils

  • Great video. So far in the past 5 years I have met great MAC MUAs who have helped me find great colors for summer and winter. Also I get older I notice a difference in my complexion, undertones etc. So it is good to check in natural light. I have to follow on your blog so I make sure I am correct with my foundations. :)

  • BECCA BECCA BECCA!! people really need to stop being stuck on MAC its doesn't have a wide range of colors yet every brown girl i see thinks they are NC45

  • LOL Yeah, pretty much. I'm done with MAC Foundations!

  • Thanks, Erin. Does the natural look mean every pore stands for itself or can they be beat down with some concealer?

  • Lol, there are a few Pore Minimizing products on the market that can probably help you out! I got one by Estee Lauder a few years back.

  • Thank you so much. It has been so hard for me. And you are so right about the natural light thing. To me, the lights at the Mac counter are set to make their products look good, but when I went outside into natural light, the color was ALLLL wrong. I finally figured out that I am NC45 in Studio Tech and I'm happy!

  • you are full of info! thanks for helping us out girl

  • You're awesome Erin! Thanks flor being so helpful sweetie.

  • Thanks for the info. Can you explain MUFE colors. There are so many more foundation colors online than in Sephora.

  • Thanks for the update. For the longest time, I was wearing NW45 when I was actually NC45. It is hard to pick the correct foundation.

  • OMG!!! That's a HUGE difference!!!!

  • hey... girl you kno sooo much... i am the worst at picking out foundation

  • Helpful video.

  • This is a great video Erin. I have gotten so many makeup tips from you. Thank you for taking time to help us all out. Your hard work and dedication is greatly appreciated.

  • GREAT VID!!! HELP ME OUT SO MUCH!!

  • THANKS!

  • GREAT Video! You're AWESOME!

  • I'm like yellow/olive(?) (just because where I would normally contour it has like its natural contour ..not yellow)..thanks for the video <33

  • Sometimes I feel that MAC artists try to make too many people NC50, especially under their florescent lighting. I went for a make over and let them do whatever and came out looking so yellow. It wasn't horrible it just looked off and unnatural. When I get lighter in the winter I look more peach and less red. It seems a bit ambiguous until you get the yellow all over my face. Then people realize I'm a NW 43-45.

  • sometimes the mac makeup artst will tell nw50 or nc50 i dont which one i am

  • your eyebrows look good thicker =]

  • You are very helpful I have more trouble finding it online. But in stores I do good now

  • Great video, again!

  • Thanks for this great video...these are great tips for looking for the right foundation. Very helpful. I wear studio fix and I was wondering is it necessary to use a powder to set it or control shine? Thanks for your help.

  • eve pearl has a wonderful video on how to use two different foundations to create the perfect skin/face.

    WONDERFUL video scandalousbeauty!

  • I'll check it out, thanks!

  • I use to wear C7. Is that the right color for me?

  • What you said about testing foundation on the hand is so true, I'm guilty of that myself.

    Great video!!

  • Thanks as always. I am going to try make up forever because I have really oily skin but the MAC hydrate moisturizer really helps me a BUNCH!

  • Im sooo glad you did this video, I went to the MAC store today. I was telling the lady at the counter that Im using NW50 the Studio Fix, but it makes my face look dry and I need better coverage. All she said was that studio fix is the best kind to use, and that was it.

  • MrsW02, try Bobby Brown. I love MAC. Many people are not mindful that MAC is a corporation. A well ran corporation who does a great job of marketing. It is the IT make up. Don't get me wrong when I go to my local MAC stores the girls fight over helping me because I purchase so much. But I do not use the foundations. It clogs the skin and created blemishes. Not satisfied w/ the finished look on women of color. I suggest when you go to MAC. Look at the pro's face Notice the damage being done.

  • I have been using MAC for 4 years and never had a blemish or breakout. Sometimes blemishes are due to not taking care of the makeup and it gets contanminated. I get compliments wherever I go because my makeup compliments my skin color.

  • Hi Beautiful, some people have a combination of tones, I have yellow and red tones, in different parts of my face!!!

I blend two different colors, to try to get the color that best meet towards middle!! I don't go lighter or darker, I go towards the middle of the two

I works for me!!!...GREAT tut!! very helpful!!

  • thanks soo much :) this really helps

  • It took me a while, I even went to mac store and this MA, white girl gave me a NC55 and NW 45 concealer but when I went home I was like no way this looks so dark so I went back to a black MA and he gave exactly what I needed spent the time to explain everything to me, Im actually NC50 and NW40 concealer...thanks for this though really good, your the best girl!

  • im nc50 also but i use nc 50 concealer i heard if u were nc u should go wit nw 4 a concealer but i tried nw 50 it was 2 dark so should i lower the numers n go wit the nw 40 also.... so far i thought it nc 50 concealer was ok

  • where can i find your blog? i get confused with my undertone.
