The thing about elitists is they are too conceited to accept the reality that they are elitist. They actually delude themselves that they know better than "the common folk" what constitutes good music. Wankers!
what is the deal that hardly any band video can be watched? EMI, typical of the music industry is hanging itself on this. They deserve to die the slow death they are making for themselves.
@morvelification Oh noes! GG are playing songs that aren't in 23/32 time with chord progressions which weren't flown in from the Andromeda galaxy! Who the hell do they think they are not pleasing you?
@progrocker69 pretty sure every single band member acknowledged that this whole album was garbage, and i dont think they have a single song i 23/32, but cool try
I got this on LP with the mask still on the cover, not cut out. Every time I see the record, and that giant staring at me begging to be cut out and used, I get tempted to do it.
Some people say this is Gentle Giant's worst stuff, because it is too usual, but seriously, if it helps people to get into GG, then I like it. The song that "did it" for me was a live performance of On Reflection, but I know some guy who say they got into them because of this album.
They had to adapt to this pop style for the band to still survive and have a shot at reaching a broader audience. They probably saw the success that Genesis had gotten with Abacab.
after listening to the Sight&sound concert i must say....this cant compare to GG's earlier music...its basically a different band at this point. A good band but not the old GG!
Sounds as if the Giant anticipated what we all came to know as the MTV sound of 1981. It's clear this sound influenced many who showed up on the small screen led off by J.J. Jackson.
I love and im obsessed with gentle giant earlier period. Its the first song i hear from the second period and from what i heard i thought it would be not good at all. It is not near the quality of the earlier material but i must admit i liked this song :)
its no secret that they werent happyy theirselves, about this cut into sausage form.but ok it makes me wonder wo did this new wave thing first.guitar lick is wonderfull, but i prefer dereks ian anderson like performance..
They got a lot of crap for this later stuff, but i think it was a good shot at updating their style to allow them to continue playing - they really had taken the prog thing past the limits of its commercial viability
They had clearly lost the vision they had earlier- probably because the record company told them to make their music "more accessible" (ie- dumb it down)
Then again, they were probably fed up of working so hard and not having any money. ("workin for years, have no moooney....")
Oath3R's comments above are right on....but ya know, even as a dumb rock band these guys were good!
although this is a more than nice song its not correctly depicting the band's profile. imo its one of those progrock-pops. It lacks creativity. No mellotron, standard riffs for the guitar, and even the lyrics are abit boring. If you want to see how Gentle Giant really sounds like go check "Free Hand" or "Proclamation"...
I just noticed something. I see 2 guitarists, but they gotta be the same person. They're wearing the same clothes, same guitar, same face!!! They never had 2 guitarists did they?
Not heard this one before. Post punk influences in there in '78, vocals have changed and they sound mainstream. The old GG were an excellent band of musicians who were great at the instrumental parts but tried too hard with the vocals. They never reached the heights that Yes, Genesis and KG did due to their clever clever vocal sound. IMHO. Gotta laugh.
YOU ARE AWESOME FOR ADDING THIS RARE VIDEO!! I HONESTLY HAVEN'T HEARD THIS SONG SINCE 1978 WHEN GENTLE GIANT PERFORMED ON AMERICAN BANDSTAND WHEN I WAS 16!! THIS WAS A TRUE BIG EVENT FOR ME TO SEE THIS VIDEO AND HEAR THE SONG AGAIN AFTER ALL THIS TIME AS I NEVER COULD REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE SONG, NOW I KNOW!!wow!

not their best work, this is for the masses who like simple nonsense
BetterTasteThanU 2 months ago
This is NOT a different sound, this sounds like ANY standard unknown new wave band. There is nothing special about this tuner.
Even worse, It sounds like a poor man's OINGO BOINGO.
That's why they never had any commercial success with this pathetic twist.
NOW, What they did on "Interview" "Free Hand" "Octopus" "The Power and the Glory".
THAT WAS DIFFERENT.

Just take a look at Ray Shulman's bored face , he looks like he's about to have a rage breakdown and burn down the studio.

Some people complains the fact that we, fans of the REAL Gentle Giant despise this sorry ass music because it wasn't complex or complicated.
They call us elitists and other stupid things.
Well
That experimentation, complexity and outlandish imagination was THE ESSENCE and the very reason of the existence OF GENTLE GIANT.
We loved Gentle Giant PRECISELY FOR THAT.
If we wanted to hear something different, we'd simply hear another band.
This crappy music IS NOT what Gentle Giant was about.

I hate when good bands from the 70's (ok, from any era) try "new things". That's a bad excuse for greed.

First, if they played this live Derek would be playing bass and Ray would be twinning with Gary.
Second, compared to all their other songs on all their other albums, this song sucks.
