Everybody blame the colonel, myself included, yet,it was Elvis's fault as well.People need to realize that Elvis was a human being,a man,and that brought ELVIS Brought upon himself. It was ultimately Elvis fault for not standing up for himself.Blind faith.
I think the Colonel was a money grubbing, back stabbing, lying bastard who scammed money from the books. He used Elvis like sooo many others. He may have marketed Elvis, but Elvis had the talent. He shoulda stood up for himself & fired the old buzzard & gotten someone honest to manage him.
@haarlemmerolie I'm sorry but that is just stupid, nobody was interested in col. tom, he didn't make Elvis, Elvis was THE KING! then, now and forever. Could things have been better? Yes of course, but it was HIM the people loved, not parker.
anybody could have managed Elvis.and several could have managed him better.there was so much to work with and at a time that couldn't have been better.who's his equal, then or now.
Elvis Presley was born not a star but a galaxy!! tom parker tied to make out like he did everything for him bull! Elvis was kind enough to even let that old ass.. stick around so he wouldn't fall off the face of the Earth!! Parker was nothing but a con a crook He wouldn't let Elvis play in Europe because parker couldn't go to Europe because Parker swindled his taxes!
I met Gordon Stoker in Memphis (1987 and 2007), and i met Colonel Tom Parker in Las Vegas (1987). Parker was a very very very nice man to all the Elvis fans. Gordon Stoker is not a nice man, he's talking dirt about Colonel Parker, and Gordon Stoker is rude to Elvis fans and arrogant.
I have met Gordon Stoker a few times, twice in Holland. When he talks about an artist, any artist, he tells his story seen through his eyes. He was there, when Elvis was alive, you weren't.
Elvis had so much charisma he was destined to be the most famous man on earth with or without The Colonel. The Colonel was an unfortunate distraction.
TOM PARKER WAS A VERY MONEY HUNGRY MAN AND THAT IS WHY HE MADE ELVIS WORK SO MUCH AND I WAS SO GLAD WHEN THEY TOOK HIM TO COURT AND TOOK ALL RIGHTS AWAY FROM HIM HE DOES NOT DESERVE ANYTHING AT ALL AND NOW HE HAS TRIED TO GET A MAN TO SAY HE WAS ELVIS SON AND THAT FAILED SO HE WAS A VERY GREEDY MAN AND VERY SELF CENTERED THINKING OF HIS SELF ONLY HE IN MY MIND KILLED ELVIS BY WORKING HIM SO MUCH AND PLUS ALL THE MEDICAL ISSUES ELVIS HAD AND PARKER DID NOT CARE UP TO THE END VERY RUTHLESS MAN
Seems like Elvis surrounded himself with far too many macho yes men. One or two of them would have been fine but Elvis created something of an overgrown boy's club, which, in the end, I think really hurt him, both emotionally and physically. Prescription drugs are every bit as addictive and deadly as "street" drugs (perhaps even more) but in Elvis's mind, they were two separate subjects. It's almost as though he'd never updated his worldview from the 50's onward
@ritter89 its not jus elvis who thought that . Prescription drugs r the most abused drugs in the western world yet the focus is mostly on the illicit stuff.
I ask myself question if there are people outside who really liked the colonel. Wherever you read or hear something - most of the people don't like him for his attitude. Even Elvis don't liked him at least and I think he had all reasons to feel so. Parker sold him like a carny attraction without taking care of Elvis' sensibilitiy and his creativity.
i dont love the col but the way elvis spent money he had to keep elvis on stage as much as he could...record sales were down and elvis put no effort int recording anymore..
i don't think these guys have any right to say anything about the relationship between col parker and Elvis, they had no contact with Elvis since the 60's, and Elvis certainly did not share any of his personal business with them even then..............
colonel parker was an illegal immigrant from holand who'd always claimed to have been born in west virginia, usa. a rumor is that he never left his native land at age 20 in 1929 to join the us army due to a murder in holand he was supposed to be involved in.....
Yes Alecoc14, Parker robbed the world of Elvis live. He was illegal and could not leave the country otherwise he would not have been able to get back in. He robbed Elvis of serious acting and spent his 50% on gambling.
Elvis worked his butt off doing live performances one after the other while Parker was gambling $1000.000 in ONE NIGHT. ALL HE WAS WAS AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT WHO KNEW A GOOD THING WHEN HE SAW IT, THATS WHY HE STUCK TO ELVIS.
colonel parker was a greedy manager to elvis presley. he suppressed elvis creativety. he refused to let elvis have creative control. he made it impossible for elvis to accept such roles as a star is born. its only fitting colonel parker was ultimately ceased from the estate. cstanchik
@MJL3764 but parker ruined elvis? creativity and sold him of as a package with deals unknown to this day in pure profits for the manager. it was near to being illegal.
I think the reason that Elvis didn't fire the Colonel, obviously you don't need a manager when you are the top draw in the world, was that the Presley's were a bit superstitious. I heard this while living in Memphis from 1975-77. Vernon and Elvis were afraid that if they dumped the Colonel, who without him they thought that possibly Elvis would have never became the giant star that he became, that Elvis' career may have declined. So it was possibly superstition that kept the Colonel his job.
Gordon Stoker is een onsympathieke man.

The thing that made me dislike the Colonel was the fact that when Elvis died he told others that it was business as usual, and he showed up at his funeral wearing a hawaiian shirt and stood by the front door the whole funeral, I also disliked the way that he took 50% from Elvis, and Elvis' 50% had to go to his employees, and the band before he could get the remainder, the Colonel used Elvis for his gambling addiction, 50%? Crazy!
its not that gladys did not like the colonell she did not trust him and knew he was making elvis do things he never wanted to like those films Elvis hated to do.i agree the colonell did get him started but the greed got the better of him.I feel Gladys would not have passed away so soon if elvis never went to the army .he had so man show to do he could not cope thats why he started to take uppers and downers.Elvis did try to get rid of the colonell but he told Elvis that he owed him money
Very true, except it wasn't Parker's fault that Elvis went into the army, he was drafted and felt it was his duty to go. However, Parker did make him in the start, but his own talent after his first song That's all right mama, would have gotten him without Parker. He HATED films, you're right. Parker's idea.
I think it is the other way around, Elvis made the colonel. That was the colonel who was desperate to work with Elvis. The only talent of the man was to recognise genius and charisma, and destroy it.
The day Elvis met up with the colonel it was the begining of the end for Elvis he worked Elvis to the bone and he got the profits Elvis was a great natured man and felt like he owed the colonel where as its the colonel who owed Elvis everything. denied him his dream to tour the world hate him for what he did to Elvis a user of a kind hearted guy who cared about his fans where as the boss just cared about his profits whenElvis wanted to leave i wish he did have
I know that in 1973 Elvis really had ENOUGH to be booked in Las Vegas by Tom Parker. This is why during the Sept. 3rd 1973 Closing Night show Elvis f*cked it up doing an unusual (and also exciting !) show ! :)

I didn't know Elvis or his manager. Hard to make a statement either way based on others opinions, but Elvis is larger than life. Business is business and I don't know many good managers that get caught up in the emotional stuff as was discussed on the film. Both were adults and sounds like each made plenty of mistakes, but it's been 31 years and not much is going to change it now.
elvis was happy for what(parker) did for him, parker made elvis what he is today,i dont like the man,but it is the truth,so live with it.elvis could have got rid of him,but he did not why?elvis started drugs when he was in the army, parker was not even there,so get your facts right, what a load of shit people come out with, read books you pricks......ha ha ha ha
It is true that I lost $40m from gambling and pimped out Elvis to pay off my debts with the Casinos. However, it was drugs that killed Elvis. Tenessee records show that in 1975 one of his doctors, Dr Nichopoulos, prescribed 1,296 amphetamines, 1,891 sedatives and 910 narcotics. I did love my boy, I just loved money more.
Too true,Elvis was Elvis long before Col' Parker turned up...also,there is a saying,"If Col' Parker made Elvis, tell him to make another one" we all know he never did !!!
the hell with parker of van kousik or whatever his name is he literally beat him in the ground 2 shows a night 7 days a week my god.he never let him tour outside the states he wasnt a very good manager either if you ask me 50 percent of the income went to him for his gambling debts man what a crook
No one ever died from working to hard you fu**ing dumb ass!!. Oh yea, E died because he had to play 2 Vegas shows per night. What a worthless moron commentary
and again.....it wasn't the colonel who killed elvis, it was the medicines he took iresponsabilly....because of the tipe of the personality who elvis was, you couldn't tell him what to do, so if he wanted to take whatever he took, you couldn't stop him......but again, if it wasn't like that(that personalitty), it wouldn't have been ELVIS
nobody can understand Elvis. He was very depressed and felt alone. He knew the colonel was abusing him and taking advantage of him, but he was trapped the colonel had him by the ba!!s. He wanted to fire him several times but the jerk knew he had Elvis. Watch the recent film, Elvis the mini series. It shows the truth. It doesnt candy coat elvis either, but it does show what a selfish manipulating man Parker really was. Yes he got eolvis started and made him a star. He was also a bad man.
.elvis and colonel they were the perfect team ( of course it was exausting to sing as much as he did, but....maybe that;s why we have this debates, because he did that, and that gived him this stardom)..long live the king, he was the greatest talent of all times...lucky for him that he had a manager like colonel, the greatest manager of all times
if it wouldn't been like that, the colonel, I think if it wouldn't have been "a manager", at least not a good one....and the way he thought of promoting elvis, all the publicity, all the things he did to keep the name ( the trademark) elvis in lights...I thigs he was brilliant and we should respect him. don't get me wrong, I'm not defending the colonel...but I just don't think people should "point the finger" on him that much....
elvis wouldn't have been today as big as he is if it wasn't for colonel! they were the perfect team...it stupid to always argue who was the best! it's like the argue between who is the best ...men or women.....these kind of "couples fights" don't need any contest between them..they are build for each other and work the best in pair!they can't be compared....
yes i think he did, he went with the crap films cause was colonels choice yet stayed faithful to his word, without a written contract, to a 50/50 share throughout his career, someone needed to pay parkers gambling addiction lol, but fair play sticking to his word from the start.
why has lamar fike got a poster of albert goldmans terrible book on his wall? is he proud of his contribution or what?

He knew Elvis shouldn't have been on stage from 1975 on. But as long as Parker got paid he didn't care.
Also because of the Colonels' gambling losses the hotel could get sweetheart deals from Parker for Elvis's concerts.

and again.....it wasn't the colonel who killed elvis, it was the medicines he took iresponsabilly....because of the tipe of the personality who elvis was, you couldn't tell him what to do, so if he wanted to take whatever he took, you couldn't stop him......but again, if it wasn't like that(that personalitty), it wouldn't have been ELVIS

nobody can understand Elvis.

Sure the colonel got elvis started, but he abused and used him. Case closed. Colonel was a nasy arogent human being

if it wouldn't been like that, the colonel, I think if it wouldn't have been "a manager", at least not a good one....and the way he thought of promoting elvis, all the publicity, all the things he did to keep the name ( the trademark) elvis in lights...I thigs he was brilliant and we should respect him. don't get me wrong, I'm not defending the colonel...but I just don't think people should "point the finger" on him that much....

elvis wouldn't have been today as big as he is if it wasn't for colonel! they were the perfect team...it stupid to always argue who was the best! it's like the argue between who is the best ...men or women.....these kind of "couples fights" don't need any contest between them..they are build for each other and work the best in pair!they can't be compared....

why? did elvis ever truly thank the colonel and tell him what a good manager he was?
ghodium 3 years ago
yes i think he did, he went with the crap films cause was colonels choice yet stayed faithful to his word, without a written contract, to a 50/50 share throughout his career, someone needed to pay parkers gambling addiction lol, but fair play sticking to his word from the start.
