Just read an article where Chris Roberts said he's definitely into the idea of re-visiting this series he created. He's ready to get back into game making. Imagine what could be done with today's technology and gaming horsepower!! I loved these games. There's been a loooooong dry spell on space sims. :^(
for those looking for the game there is a vendor off ebay-who is now selling a version of WC 4 that will work with windows 7, got a copy-just keep in mind since the graphics are out of date from the mid 90's it works but the video at times can be chopy
I remember this as the first awesome game I played, and also the first game to make me play 8 hours in a row! XD I was so immersed in the game that I played through the entire campaign (all 6 CD's :X) in one go, and totally forgot to eat my dinner :P
Can you help me? I have the original DOS version of this game but I cannot install it even with DosBox. It says that there is not enough free space on my winchester but there is plenty! This is the same problem with Wing Commander 3 but fortunately I can play the game without Dosbox. What should I do?
@Drowfan Installing thru DOSBox may require installing to the C drive. One avenue for help if you've tried multiple hard drive locations is the WCNews site
@DaveCaspermeyer I know that site and followed their instructions but could not succeed. :( How did you install your game? Or do you have the DVD version?
@Drowfan I had some thoughts about the issue, and if I'm not mistaken you need to install the patch that let's you run the game from Windows. One way to achieve this is to copy the content of the CD to a directory. After successfully applying the patch, you should be able to install the game.
As much as I loved the earlier Wing Commander games, these later movie/games really ruined the franchise, along with space sims in general. I would love to see a sequel, or perhaps remake, with modern technology, but this whole series became such a joke, between the cheesy D-movie actors and the god-awful movie adaption. Thanks a lot Chris Roberts!
Can't do it in this game. First, the WC3/4 engine can't render the blast wave ring effect. Second, because the engine doesn't render momentum effects well enough to surf the wave, even if it did. You can certainly launch a mine and hit the boosters, but the result is disappointing.
The vision engine used in Prophecy can do the effect, but I don't recall any launchable mines in that game.
Option 2: Install the Windows (officially a windows95 patch) patch to get it working with directX. Then right click on the shortcut and select compatibility mode for Windows95. The windows exe checks for win95 and won't run if it thinks it's running on NT (XP= NT 5.1)
Yes, you can play with mouse and a keyboard, but it's not as enjoyable.
@BakaDaruku do you really mean that? Or you are just writing the same thing you write on every youtube video of a game you used to play and like? Same as someone who liked a movie, sees any scene from it on youtube and comments "That was the best scene in the movie!" on every single scene of that movie.
I love many games... and many can fall into the best "genre" but really I have never played anything that has stirred me like this one. I would go so far as to say it even went on to help define the man I am today.
as for the best scene in any movie.. there is only one. There can only be one.
1997 Starship Troopers. The Klendathu Drop Sequence.
@BakaDaruku Yeah. While there have been games with better gameplay, this has the best story and setting out of any game ever. Darn, it's better than most movies and tv-series i've seen.
This is the only Wing Commander game I've never actually beaten. I was too young to really get into it. I was more keen on replaying WC 1, 2, and 3. I do regret having never played this one through and through before though.
i actually really liked the plot of this game, and yes, I agree this is one of the best computer games ever. What DO you do with a giant economic war machine when there's no more enemy? Makes you think.
I was disappointed that Seether was all talk. Not only did he have to out class his opponent technologically, he also had to sneak up on them. On an even playing field, he was a poor pilot and easy to beat.
How could ANYONE love a cloned lunatic who laughs at killing innocent people? Thrakhath at least had the excuse of being a damn Kilrathi and a imperialist.
They don´t make this kind of computergames anymore. Sure its expensive. But since WC4 the sales bers per titels has been increased by more then 10 times. No Flightsim or Spacesim with story and animation since at least 5 years.
Wow, well, they did have to do all the textures and high def. That's crazy though. Games are costing as much as movie productions! But, then again, they are like movies :)
Also true--especially with the newer system and better details and graphics, you're right. I have yet to play it still, ticks me off-- Anyhoo, good series
I can remember when I played this definately one of the best intro movies for a game ever , the best intro out of all the wing commander games anyway, but overall I think wing commander 3 was the best of the series.
How DO YOU get the game to run on WIndows XP, not sure what I need to add...Also without the interlacing and the right audio quality in flight? Not Midi...
The Win95 version of WCIV actually runs fine on XP. The interlacing was a command line option I thought, and the music was streaming audio, no midi at all.
Lox12 100% sign. WC4 is one of the greatest games in video game history! Unfortunately I've got the german version. The german synchro is ridiculous, particularly in this intro.
Oh man, I forgot about the bizarro interlacing in this. I freaking loved this game. One month, not too long after it came out, I played through and beat it every Sunday. Good times.
The very best game in all times!!! Still I am a big fan!

@Drowfan Google up wcnews.
Then to the right these a section called resources in that section click on (files).
The page comes up next click on wing commander IV link to quickly take you to that part of th page then download the (win95 upgrade patch.)
Install the game normally then after that copy the contents of teh ZIP archive into the games install folder.
Then run the game via the WC4W.exe file & it should run fine as it did to me.
