I believe Atheist was in the studio for this album around the time Death were releasing their album human and they're both Florida band's and so is Cynic,I remember when the death with jazz element's idea was being kicked around quite a bit.Pestillence started really throwing around the idea on their album sphere's.

i like how sloppy (in a good way) this band is, its like the tempo keeps slightly shifting up and down all the time or the some of the different instruments play slightly behind or ahead of the beat often. theres no other band ive heard like it. certainly doesnt sound like they played to a click track

You lay back or forward on the beat because of the mellowness of jazz, and it doesn't matter which way you lay. Atheist pulls it off so fucking well that it's mindblowing.
