MMD proves himself to be a reincarnation of Nandanar himself.
His singing of the words of Nandanar who calls himself a poor low born only proves that actually it is the so called rich & superior clans who were/are always poor & low.
Whenever I hear this song my soul vibrates with ecstasy.
Varugalamo ayya?! - who else is more eligible than you the great devotee to enter the sannadhi of the almighty? - I could see Lord Natarajar after hearing this song extending his hands and hugging this child of his.
Many new Tamil songs sung by singers like Nithyashree and Aruna are good only because of the singer. The lyrics are terrible. It is nice to hear the great poet's compsition by a great singer. Thanks a million for this video
The beauty of this video - a) the simplicity and presentaion of MMD b) the beauty of lyrics of Gopalakrishna Bharathi , his command over Tamil language c) the music -
When MMD sings "Boomiyil Pulaiyanai pirnathene ",he becomes one with Nandanar pleads naturally before lord Shiva
All the songs fromm 'Nandanar' are classics! You just get immersed in the divine quality of the music. It is a pity that unlike the present days where the music director steals the limelight, the Musib Director of the film, M.D.Parthasarathy is long forgotten!! Amazing music compositions!!
MAANJI RAAGA in which this submissive musical appeal to Lord Shiva is based, is a rare one. There is a famous Kriti (composition of note) by Syama Sastrigal in this Raaga, beginning "Brova vamma", which brings out the unique, sublime excellence of the composer and his emotions before Goddess Kanchi Kamakshi in terms of the submissiveness and anugish from spiritually unsatisfying existence.
Sri MM Dandapaani Desikar was a highly pious and well-trained musician following his community's hereditary devotional occupational as ODHUVAAR, Tamil Saivite devotee-chanter corresponding to Vedic pundit. He was ignored in C music circles of those days, but he, like Nandanaaar played by him in this video, overcame bigotted resistance, to become famous as a musician and actor. Some of his film songs based on C.music are SIMPLY INIMITABLE, however much others may try to match him in their quality!
Nandanar charithram (historical biography) on which this old film video clip is based, was to portray to ALL communities making up Hindu society, that one's standing and status in life is directly linked to one's self discipline or material + spiritual culture through effort, and not to one's birth.Heredity helps in this self-cultivation or Sanskaaram, only it is dutifully carried over from generation to generation, and this ennobling evolutionary process comes to an end it this fact is ignored.
b) Tamil lyrical quality was of a higher order than today's composns. There is no reason why the younger generation should not 'look back' to imbibe these worthy qualities. BTW, fusion, based for most part on mass produced instruments of Western genre, cannot bring out the true elegance and subtlety of C. Music. Younger musicians should try and reverse this growing trend towards fusion which is undoubtedly due to commercial reasons (to attract huge crowds of young people alienated from C music)
Great feelings/thoughts that come to our mind when watching properly uploaded video clips of the greats of a generation ago: a) The singers were not meek while presenting their music, unlike most of today's representatives. This, I guess, was due to a far greater mastery of Kalpana (creative imagination) faculty which is an essential requirement of Carnatic (indeed Indian classical) music for presenting music with spontaneous sparks and without hesitation. CONTD.
I AGREE WITH YOU, EMBIKAY. I am also hopeful that your suggestions will be taken kindly to, by the upcoming generations of C musicians who will now balance commercial and classical value considerations better than during the last decade or so. BTW, fusion, to my mind, is one means of drawing young people into the Carnatic fold, if they are straying into lighter forms of music already. And once attracted thus, they will help make a wider audience for C Music which is an important need for it.
Then Lord Nataraja ordered the archagars to give him a warm reception and Nandanar entered Sannathi and attained Mukti by entering sanctum sanctorum of Sri Nataraja Lotus Feet!
Nandanar born in scheduled caste community was a true devotee of Lord Shiva. But he was ot allowed to enter Sri Nataraja temple Chidambaram. He himself weeping and asking Lord "Can I come to ur Sannathi for singing and Dancing!!
Oh lord ! can i come there ??can i come near you to,stand, dance and sing ur praise??
are you not the great kind hearted lord!! can this downtrodden please you and see your heavenly dance?/
why i was born in this downtrodden community in this world? will i be able to come there to see your beautiful dance?why i have not done any good deeds?
I have atlast come to ur sanctum and seen your dancing ..will my sins and bad deeds will be washed away ,,,oh lord??
The best... all time..
