i think he has the ability to know how things work. he can c the strengths and the abilities of the person and then he kills them to get their powers. so basically he can have all the powers in the world.

killing them is actually the fastest way. he would have to understand or care for them to do that, which takes time. if he kills, he just cuts them open and looks at their brain. much quicker.

Actually in the future Sylar explodes. But he took Claires healing power-but he never killed her cause she can never die. In the future when Peter goes to see Sylar(Gabe) he has a son named Noah, and he kills him by accident, Sylar gets mad and explodes.. :) but hes still alive.
