  • leroi

  • He kind of reminds me of Tom Hanks in the face.

  • lol titties 0:48

  • I think this is by far the best version of this song. Everyone's got their own opinion but there is a whole lot of emotion and passion coming out of this version more so than in the others

  • It would've bee also timeless without DMB... but it's a terrific cover...

  • lol 0:42 youtube forgot to censor the boobies!

  • @steadymovingpictures is there a problem with that? LOL

  • In my opinion the best performance is the one from Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95

  • that is gonna be a legendary music momment in my opinion if not already

  • they totally rock that song, i wonder what dylan thinks about their version.

  • 0:44

  • how many dang people are here gosh dang ive never seen so many people at a concert

  • look at rock in rio

  • u2 made a cover of this song not half as good

  • i saw them play this at piedmont park in atlanta

  • Damn, to see this in person.... I don't think I'd ever want to see another show again. Nothing would top this!

  • This cover and Cortez, the Killer are two of my favorite Dave covers that I believe he does better than the original artist or any other person to cover it after

  • I love this song so freakin' much. And the part I find funniest is that before I heard DMB's version, listening to ti as performed by Hendrix or Dylan made me immediately go look for something else to put on. Something about both Hendrix and Dylan's voices just irritated me, and I was never big into Jimi soloing (not to say he isn't -amazing-, that just ain't my kinda thing).

I'd argue that their best performance of this had to be at Central Park, if only for Stefan's badass intro.

    Cheers.

  • In person its amazing to experience DMB's version as an encore, I was blown away. Central Park is great..but you should also check out Folsom Field [if you ignore the psychedelic camera work] version here on youtube.

  • I actually have the Folsom album; I've always just liked the energy and force of the Central Park concert slightly more ^^ But yeah, I'm seeing them twice this summer (soooo freakin' excited), possibly three times if I do both nights at SPAC, since it's only a couple hours from my house. The other time'll be at Bethel PAC. I'm sooo hoping they throw in Watchtower for once of the shows!

    Cheers from New York.

  • @simplecreativity - ok simple hendrix and dylans voice do not appeal to you i can understand that but dave matthews does??? He sounds like he deliberately is attempting to be retarded or a fruit tart take your pick. This is about as eventful as a local cover bands rendition would be. Wheres the appeal?

  • @notoriodtc You've answered your own question. Just as Hendrix and Dylan's versions are not to my tastes, DMB's is not to yours. Though, if you're arguing that it's 'boring', I'd recommend you find videos of their performances of it at Central Park and Folsom Field, and a video or two of Dave singing it alone. Personally, I think it's great; just because you disagree doesn't mean you have to disparage their performance, nor should we have to fight about it.

    Peace.

  • @simplecreativity Its not an sub bar performance simple, the bands just awful. Growing up in a generation thats spawned disciples for the group no ones actually given any reason why hes so revered and put him above everyone else.

  • @notoriodtc I really don't get your position. Apparently it's fine for something like Bob Dylan to -not- be my cup of tea, yet the fact that I and many others enjoy DMB's music appears to drive you up the wall. I don't put him above everyone for any reason other than I like his sound the best, and I enjoy the band's performances more than any other that I've ever heard.

Time for you to get over it; again, it's ok for us to disagree. Music is all about opinion and interpretation.

  • @simplecreativity

i love the central park version also. . . the one from folsom field is also pretty awesome

  • dave mattews band lo máximo esto si es música en el mejor festival de rock del mundo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @simplecreativity Are you kidding

  • @simplecreativity central park was amazing

  • @simplecreativity No one gave you thumbs up cause this is really really good but nothin beat's Jimi's version.

  • @1chamberlain1 Well it's a good thing I don't judge my quality of life based on Youtube's reception of my opinions. And like I said, it's not that Jimi Hendrix isn't an incredible musician; it's that I'm just not interested in his performances. I don't enjoy long electric guitar solos very often, and his style is not to my tastes. I just prefer the DMB version of the song because I think it's more musically advanced as a whole, rather than just the solo(s) being exceptional.

  • @simplecreativity The solos aren't the only thing that are exceptional in Jimi's version though.

  • @1chamberlain1 I'm literally listening to Hendrix's Watchtower right now, and I'm not hearing where anything stands out other than the guitar he's put in. The background riffs are as basic as can be, to clear space for his solos and added riffs. His vocals are good, but not very emotional or gripping. It's not a thrilling song for any reason to me other than solos, and again, that's not really my thing. Please elaborate on what you said, since I'm so wrong and don't seem to get the point.

  • @simplecreativity Do you play guitar?

  • @simplecreativity Jimi is very subtle in this song. Unless you play guitar and you've learnt (or attempted learning it his way) you wouldn't understand. Obviously the soloing is the most noticeable part but there is much more to the song than that. The little licks and fills are definitely not as basic as can be. But whatever, you're 1 in 500 million. I'm not gonna waste my time any longer.

There's a reason Dave Matthews based his cover on Jimi's version of the song.

  • @1chamberlain1 I do play guitar, and I can play many of those licks, myself (check my page if you don't believe it). However, as I said, -except for Jimi's guitar work-, there is nothing in particular about that version that is so impressive. Those riffs are his, and the background is indeed cleared to make way for them. Also, Dave's cover isn't just based on Jimi's version; it's much more nuanced and a combination of Dylan's, Hendrix's and his own ideas.

  • @1chamberlain1 @1chamberlain1 They add a more complex sound to the song, layered with the many instruments to make the song much more powerful. The slowed verse creates a charged, foreboding opening that gives way to huge, soaring lines in the choruses, which are separated by intense, diverse solos. I find DMB's approach much more musically satisfying, vocally and instrumentally, than Hendrix's. Again, Hendrix's guitar is great, but you don't get that it's not what I'm after in Watchtower.

  • @simplecreativity Whatever man everyones got their own preferences I guess.

  • @simplecreativity not to pick a fight, but... isn't it simple creativity?

  • @meeebit Not sure what you're getting at here other than potentially trying to revive this little spat and troll me. Sorry if I'm mistaken, but it's sort of a vague, mockingly phrased question. And doesn't make sense, to boot.

  • No. Bad.

  • Bob Dylan wrote the words, Hendrix made the song an amplified masterpiece and Dave Matthews Band re-incarnated it to make it timeless

  • @spooninspoon Lets not forget U2's version or the Grateful Dead.

  • @spooninspoon Hendrix made the tune when Dylan himself even plugged in to play the song on stage instead of the country rendition written on john wesley harding. Matthews does nothing for the song except sounds like a retard and turn it into some lame lounge act cover.

  • @notoriodtc thats not really too much different from what I said besides your matter of opinion on dmb's version.

  • Not that anyone on earth gives a shit about my or any of your opinions, there is no question in my mind that this poem has been given it's best ever incarnation by Dave Matthews.

I'd love to simply shake his hand and say, "Awesome job, dude!"

  • Thank you. I hate how people now are like "No, only Hendrix, Clapton, etc. are legends" but one day Dave is going to be a legend, if not already, in my book.

People have got to give this man some credit.

  • this is so fucking awesome.

  • I admit, I am a huge Dave fan....but can anyone show me a better live Watchtower version. I see it as Watchtower "evolution" not just another version!!!!

  • RIP LEROI

  • Totally awesome, seen this so many times never get sick of it. The best version of this song period!

  • hola from valencia venezuela.................. yes there is a U2 version of these song checkit aut is in ratle and hum and is nothing to compare pease seeee ya

  • hola from valencia venezuela first i heard the u2 cover of this song and i thought that it was ok ........................... but then i heard the DMB cover and now i think that u2s cover is realy nothing compare to these amaizing song amaizing played by the best band in the world DMB pease chau

  • I've never heard U2's version of this song, but I'm sure it doesn't compare to what DMB does. RIP Leroi.

  • what a cover...how he sings and pronounces the words is simply awesome!

  • he put his own spin on it just like jimi did

  • not bad considering Dave was dodging shoes throughout the whole song

  • oh my word the interval of the 3 notes LeRoi plays at 4:25, WHAT A LEGEND!!

Thanks for sticking this on :)

  • my god boyd is RIPPED

  • i didnt no u get a 12 pack from playing the violin

  • This is probably the best version of All Along the Watchtower that I've ever seen Dave play.

  • i conquer

  • God Damn, I wish I was born in 1980 instead of 89.

  • no worries, bro... you should wish that you were born in '60 instead of '80. trust me! if you like Dave Matthews (like I do), check out the Allman Brothers and Jimi Hendrix live. enjoy.

  • that would be sick if they had boyd play hendrix's lead parts

    that would sound awesome

  • if you were to estimate the amount of people there were at the audience at woodstock 99, how much would you estimate?

  • I've seen estimates anywhere from 200,000-250,000.

  • good call. and that's a shitload of people. what a lineup. it's hard to imagine a concert where dave matthews isn't a nighttime headliner. there were easily 8-10 bands there that deserved HEADLINER status. it was sick from start to finish.

  • look at that 8 pack on boyd lol

  • this version has a slower rhythm than the others

  • wow, that's a pretty bad bass-solo

  • This version is way worse than the central park version... The sax solo doesn't fit half as well as Butch's keyboard on the central DVD! The bass intro is also way better.

    But still i nice jam:)

  • way worse? really? seems like a pretty sick version to me.

  • Watchtower and two-step are like the best songs dmb performs. theyre amazing they can jam out soo good togther.

  • damn, I was like 13 then, born a little too late...but I could most of their songs by that time though, but I oculdn't go to many concerts, trade offs I guess of being born in the late 80's...

  • I think i've heard every version they have done of this song at least 3x and this to me is the BEST, I can't get enough!

  • God damn, Boyd can play!

  • no aha folsom and central park are the best versions to this day

  • is this not truly the best version??????

  • The version on Listener Supported is part of my "Watchtower Holy Trinity"... in no particular order: Tom Cochrane & Ken Greer's December, 1988 acoustic performance on Command Performance, Neil Young's version celebrating Dylan's 30th Anniversary, and the Listener Supported version.

  • actually this performance is legendary there are people ive talk to that went to woodstock 99 and pretty much after that whole day the fans of other bands were talking about it!

  • A fitting Woodstock tribute song...

  • glad someone was in the right mind to record this cause it sure as hell wasnt me!

    peace*

  • best watchtowers performance

  • ha ha i like how that girl shows her tits

  • sarcean where did you get the video of woodstock 99....did you record it off pay=per view when it was going on?

  • Nothing was better than Alpine's encore of Watchtower 07. It would've blown your mind. There's something about the energy that you can't capture on camera or CD from his concerts, makes it so amazing.

  • oh and bob dyllan.

but dave and jimi at woodstock!

  • i would think that dave and jimi

are the only two that can really pull this song off

  • This version is still better than Folsom Field in my opinon :)

  • I still like the Folsom Field performance best, but this is still great stuff.
