You people are idiots! First of all this book is a sci-fi novel— fiction, that is presenting a what if. scenario and homage to sci-fi classics of the 50's and 60's. As for reality, Asteroid impacts caused the extinction of the dinos! One may have hit during the dark ages, plunging mankind into hunger and darkness. One hit North America creating the Cumberland Gap. And Asteroid Fragments hit Jupiter, causing atmospheric havoc. Within the past few years we had some near misses.
lol I have to laugh because theres no doubt we'll be fine, I read waaaay to much about this stuff and I wouldn't give this book a second look because the premise is so implausable that every single high power missle on earth would have to be destroyed after a massively unlikely series of cosmological events, so yeah anyone whos worrying, we'll all be fine, no worries
or destroy all sentiant life, so the very premise of this book is so unlikely it's rediculous, but it still tries to make it self look scientific and clever, all this from a guy currently reading Amercan Gods by Neil Gaiman, oh well at least that doesn't predtend to be a likely occurance.
a) I agree with UACmarine b) it is mathmaticly improbible that an asteriod would not be in a steady orbit that it is highly unlikley to leave. c) if there was a rouge asteriod it would be drawn towards the sun giving it a very small chance of coming anywhere near earth, if it came anywhere near earth the diffrent gravitational forces would probably just pull it round us and on towards the sun, d) if by some strange miricle a large asteriod did head for earth it would either wipe out a small area
its impossible because of saturn right?, he sacrefice him to lead the meteors, astroids into him or his orbit right?? then i have learn correctly in Nasa :)
Fact: The meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs only killed about 20% on impact. the rest died from suffocation and starvation by the ash covering the sky. If an asteroid were to hit the Earth; 1. Our leaders would not stand by, and would most likely fire missiles, 2. An asteroid of that size would be mostly burnt up in re-entry, and become many smaller pieces, and 3. the only way it could destroy the planet like that is if it was as BIG as the Earth.
Before giving me more thumbs down, think about it:
A planet hitting us will be goyng at around 1000000 km/h or so (depending on it's mass) and at that speed the energy of the impact will be of about 100000000000 atomic bombs (earth= boom)
this could never happen the astroid could hit earth yes but do that much dmage now ay and even if it could i bet we would probabley shoot a missle at it or something xD
Theoretically, if you made a non-explosive missle powerful enough, you could have it latch onto the meteor, much like a leech latch onto you, and with enough thrust, you could steer it off course using the thrust from the missile.
It's a fact that we would shoot a missle at it, It would distroy it but it wouldn't make it worse, We will go with hundreds of Astroids over a big one.
NASA claims they have the precision of doing it, But NASA has claimed many things in the past that they couldn't do...The Military openly claims they would shoot first. But thats besides the point. If it did happen and we all died, It would most likely be the same as the Dinosaurs. Evolution would take place again, But new species.
If you can hit the asteroid with a large enough misile (which would be a nuculer warhead) it would most likely facture or split into pieces seeind as this would create pleanty of smaller asteroids the friction caused by the earth's atmosphere would destroy them
look, a asteroid of just 50 meathers will destroy(compleatly) A city the size of New york.
And any large meteor will make through the atmosphere without much problem.
A meteor is destroyd by heat caused by fricyion with the gasis in the atmosphere, but a large meteor will go so fast that it would take it only 6-10 seconds to go yhrough the entire atmosphere.
religion was put into place so tht humans would not get .i beleive tht hell is wht we make it if yur angry steel kill anything tht causes us us to react in negatives way are hellish.however if yu smile and everything is positive yur in heaven
were we realy go after this depends on wether yu hv had children when we die we live on our energy tht is ,in our off springs. i hvnt died yet so in fact it is only a theory but i think a viable one.
I'm not sure whats this Human Factor all about but based on what I witnessed, seems like that asteroid destroyed all life on earth since it was all engulfed in a sea of flames. thats scary.
I believe humans are the biospheres immune system response to all extra-terrestrial factors... including asteroids. I think our fighting is merely instrumental in forcing us to technologically grow in order to take on such a problem. So... will we get past the human factor? yes.
The story is a what if story— in a what if story anything can happen, it's fiction. As for the Human Factor— that "factor" deals with our nature— will we work together or fight against each other (history is full of examples), As for the name Evolution— I picked that name for my production company— I like to think that I'm always looking forward— always striving to improve myself and my work— in essence to evolve. the one that killed the Dinosaurs was about 10km across
And your wright it took about 2000000 ears for the dinosaurs to die

aparently the moon is the result of a huge collision with the earth that created the crust that we live on...
apparently before that it was almost pure molten metal-
asteroids in recent times, have passed between the moon and earth...
many are totally black then when they approach earth the scientists suddenly see
them and panic

You are only partically correct.

an explosyve missle will just split it in a lot of small asteroids that are also dangerous

Not all of them would burn up but a good majority, many would die but not not nearly as many as if it hit us.

an asteroid of this scale will be destroyed by the collision with the atmospher/ozone (i dont know the english word sry if its wrong)
or in collision with the earth missiles
