I took the Denali Star, Gold Star Service from Denali to Talkeetna in June'09. Wow, is the best I can describe it! Loved the dining car, Loved the scenery, and loved the service. It was fantastic!
I've been on this route! For me, the best thing was that the last car had a platform at the very tail of the train that you could go outside on and have a clear view behind the train. It was absolutely amazing to be out there on some of the high bridges over river gorges!
We're taking the train from Anchorage to Fairbanks as part of a rail tour. Would you recommend the Gold Service i.e. dome car for the long leg to Denali?
What other tips would you offer? We did the Amtrack Coast Starlight last year so have train experience but this is a whole different deal?
What kind of video ops do you have from the train?
I loved the Coast Starlight! Hard to compare it with the Denali Star but they both reward equally. Definitely pop for the Gold Service but don't expect too much in the way of food, Gold gives you run of the whole train which is like a museum of ex-Union Pacific cars from the 50'sand 60's. I took lots of video. Try to walk with your camera from one end of the train to the other in an unbroken shot. Mine came out great!. You will enjoy this!
