How and what do you practice? Just ask all this cuz I'm at an intermediate level and striving to get that good or better, so looking for advice on how to reach your level of play or better from where I'm at now in my drumming.

Well...I'v played drums since i was 4years old.

I'm only 16 so I don't attend a music shcool yet, But I plan on it! And I'v never had lessons.

I'v played in Church all my life, So I'v done countless Church gigs and jam sessions. And at the age of 13 I started doing studio gigs!

When it comes to practice, I work on alot of pocket playing. And fills whenever I'm just messin' around. But most of all! The key to my playing is that God has blessed me with a gift. So I use it to the MAX.

Yeah that's how it went down with me! Ive had a different road though! I started when i was 10, and played in Church most of my life too. I'm in my 30s though, so i grew up playing the old time gospel. But up for a while now I'm back into it for the past 2 years. I have a lot of set experience and with rudiments, but I guess you could say all else is new to me. (dynamics, ambidexterity, etc......) Its like I'm getting drum education all over again. Thanks for the advice.

Ok now Ive heard about practicing pocket! maybe you can tell me what your understanding of pocket is! Is this just playing that base beat of a song minus fills, accents, etc/ Or is it like laying down the groove while playing fills, crashing, riding, bass doubles, and all that at particular point in the jam? It like Ive seen cat do both and claim it as pocket, but Im not sure which is which. Also How do you practice pocket, along side of a jam, or you learn the groove and play with a metronome?

Pocket is not what you add or don't add!!

Its the groove and solidness you give in a beat.

You can still do fills, accents and all that other stuff and still be solid and keep the groove going!!!

But however!!!!

You don't want to be doing a drum solo in a song!lol!

So if cats tell you to stay in pocket, It just means your doing to much!!
