  • Oh my, the camera was flicking all over the place and got me dizzy. Cameraman? Would be nice to actually see a person clearing out the garden instead of showing before and after pictures - I don't know how to do that part. Do you put it in black bags or boxes? How?

  • You did a lot of work in a short period. Looking good. Some of your beds look like the level has shrunk. Same here so I'll have some topping up to do.

    Regards, Gary

  • @garygardens Yes they have gone down in soil volume, but that is good. Leaves plenty of room to add compost that I will get.

  • looks good man. all of my apartment growing stuff failed. too busy trying to get back on my feet with work and school. hectic to say the least. but it looks like your doing good.

  • Im so excited for the growing season to start, I think I might even start my little indoor seedling soon to get a jump on things (Up here in ontario the growing season is shorter than what Im used to)

Ill be looking foreward to your videos again this year! Ive decided to expand my garden from two beds to four. Im hoping for a winter of grocery shopping from my frozen/preserved garden veggies.

  • @Duochan Thanks for watching. I'm actually doing some yard work this weekend and making some changes. Hope your garden does well.

  • I think that's part of the fun with raised beds, "hmm.. What can I try this year?"

I too find myself wanting to build "ohh just one more bed" loll. I learned from my first year that I can plant stuff closer together than I did last year. I didn't realize how much space I wasted compared to what everyone else was doing. :-)

  • @gardenvespers777 I completely agree. I'm actually making the 2 beds to replace the old rotting one today :). With the raised beds you can definitely plant certain things closer together. I somewhat follow the square foot method and you can plant peppers, tomatoes (indeterminate), eggplant, and a lot of other things in 1 square foot.

  • you sure have come a long way since your first up side down garden! i can't wait until spring. i always enjoy watching your vids jason, keep up the great work!

  • @1978graham Thanks for the comment. I'm happy that I can start preparing the garden and start those videos up again.

  • The pressure treated wood works better, I did check it out and in the 55 years that it has been in circulation no one has had any heath related problems and if you put weed block around the inside of the raised bed the rumored risk is even less. I live in Alberta Canada and it is almost a must to have presure treated wood, our winters are horrible.

  • @crewlla . I couldn't ever find any articles with health related problems either. The nice thing is I have decided to take that bed out and replace it so I may be making 2 beds back there instead of one :). So maybe a little more garden for me this year.

  • @14dollarz lol in a few years time your whole back yard will be decked out in raise beds and your house will be filled with rewards from your labor. You will have two deep frezzers and a wall of canned foods. LOL this year I will be buying a american pressure canner and adding on to my aka "grocery store" thats in my basement. I am also looking in to buying a farm. This hobbie is so freeking crazy and yummy too.

  • @crewlla Ha. Very true.

  • Hey Jason, I just wanted to let you know that you inspired me to start gardening myself this year. I even started my own videos as well. I am really excited about the growing season this year. I'm down in Florida so I may be planting in about 2-3 weeks, the lows are in the 50's and highs in the 70's already. I can't wait!!!

  • @NewUrbanGardener Thanks a lot. These are always the best comments to get. I was inspired after watching youtube as well so I'm glad to pass along what i've learned. I'll be watching your vids. Looks like you have a nice setup.

  • @NewUrbanGardener you will diffently get the gardening addiction after your first year it will get bigger and bigger. I have no grass in my front yard or back yard and I only have raised beds.

  • was nice last weekend in South Carolina lol =-)

  • Wow jason you have come so far.... I remember when you started by trying the whole upsidedown plants on the fence. Best of luck you this year, I will be watching out for your updates

  • @banks8292 Thanks for watching. I always appreciate the comments. I looking forward to April!

  • Hey Jason, I was missing the videos. I started both a patio/container/hanging garden in my condo as well as a raised bed vegetable garden at my mom's place (she has the yard and space). I started with 2 4*8 beds and will likely add another 2 there. I'm just going to grow all kinds of vegetables there, greens peppers, tomatoes, the works! I was inspired by your videos and you gave awesome advise. Look forward to seeing what else you do. Happy growing season!

  • Johnny Selected Seeds , have you seen the sale section it was particularly exciting. I watch for every little detail so I can eventually grow here in Nevada... talk about how you prepare the soil after other plants ... ; ) waiting for this growing season videos from on the fence. DO LOTS OF CANNING,, that was fun to watch......serious you got to check out that site and do at least 3 more eggplants there are minis and ball ones and long skinny... and white ones.. eggplant is an acquired taste

  • Nice, and there are so many kinds of mint to play with - Peppermint, Spearmint, and the more exotic Pineapple Mint, Chocolate Peppermint, Apple Mint, etc.

Since you have such a nice big yard - do you think it's time to add some Fruit Trees or Berry Vines? Many will grow well in your climate and expand your garden. (Still morning the 'strawberry massacre' from last year, lol.) Pears, Blackberries, Raspberries, Apricots, Plums - oh getting hungry.

  • We have had mint on the north side of the house for many years, and never have to think about it taking over anything. The mint on the south side was a huge patch about 8x10 feet, and last year it got turned into a tomato garden, muah ahahahaha!

We also have commelina, which fills in swales and takes over large areas where there is a lot of water. It's invasive, but very useful, if you know where to put it!

  • No more strawberries? :o

Haha, I still have some in my garden. Have been following you since '09 but still haven't got videos of me or my garden up myself. So you're going to basically do peppers, tomatoes and mint? Or more this year?

  • @JustFresh099 I'll be doing pretty similar to last year just less varieties of peppers. So i'll have tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, yellow squash, eggplant. Then some herbs like mint, basil and maybe a few others.

  • @14dollarz

Ah ok, well I look forward to your videos!

    Good gardening!

    Tim

  • Nice. I'm still cleaning up my majorly messy garden. My chickens at least have helped till. But now they have to be closed out of the veggie area. I'm very excited about this year and want to grow lots from the gourd family.

  • Hi Jason, looks well. Good thinking on the planting but may I suggest that you reserve a small bed, or part of, for experimental plants? We always spot something new or different when buying plants or seeds and it's very frustrating not to have space for them. In the event that you don't see anything just fill in with stuff you like. I'm looking forward to your videos this year and I'm already quite jealous of your climate (again).

    Best Wishes, Brendan.

  • @baconsoda I will probably do that. I haven't figured out what I'm putting in my smallest 3x4 bed which is the one all the way on the left if that makes sense. So it may be the last bed I plant and if I see something new at the garden centers this spring I may try something different. I'm psyched about planting and can't wait for things to start growing again.

  • Jason, mint will come back every year without fail. I will be getting out in my garden this coming weekend. Temps forecasted in the 70's. With the winter we have had, I am ready, ready, ready for spring. Seed catalogs are my friend! Looks good. Can't wait to see your updates this year and I will try to do better with mine. Noreen.

  • @atticus9799 . Oh really? Learn something new every day. But even in the pots? It would seem like the roots would eventually kind of "self choke" themselves out after a year or 2 or eat all the nutrients in the soil. Seemed like when I took the massive root ball out there wasn't much soil in there, but just roots :). I'll have to try that then at the end of this year and just leave the ones I'll plant in April alone.

  • @14dollarz All you have to do is take that root ball and split it in half and pot it in two pots with new soil. I do this every year. I only grow mint in pots because it is so invasive. If you put that rootball somewhere, it will grow like gangbusters. I had a neighbor once who brought me a shovel full of mint from her garden and tossed it in a patch of dirt by my front walk. Within a month the mint had spread and by the end of summer it was huge and lush. Mint always grows! Noreen.

  • @atticus9799 Ok cool. That makes perfect sense. I did notice a few tiny green leaves before i pulled it out, but just thought they were straglers not yet dead, but they were probably just waiting for the heat again. I'll give this a whirl next year. Thanks noreen.

  • Good to see you back in the saddle again!! Hope this a beautiful growing season for you. I am starting two gardens myself this year for the first time, one raised bed at my mother's house and a container garden at my own little apartment so I'm excited to get started. Well goodluck!!!

  • @GulfCoastJaguarundi Thanks for watching. When I was thinking about a paint color I tried to find something similar to the bricks I was getting. Kind of a terra cotta color.

  • I see you too are ready to start gardening again. This year, in addition to my square foot gardening i'm planning to do some conventional gardening by tearing up a lot of my front yard and row planting. To do this I've got an addition to my gardening arsenal. Stop by and see my latest video... ;)

  • @therealvirginiawind Thanks for the comment. I'm finally getting pretty revved up about planting. Especially this year since i'm not adding any other beds and have things setup and just need it to get warm and plant.

I just watched your latest garden vid and looks like you and I are in the same mindset of prepping for this year :). It will be cool to see how your new conventional setup works out. You have a lot of space. I look forward to the updates.

  • I'm jealous!! We still have plenty of snow on the ground in PA. Looks good!

  • @WestChesterGarden Thanks. I feel lucky I get to start earlier than most being in the southeast, but I get jealous of people in Florida that can grow almost year round :).

  • What happened to all the buckets and what is the size of the wood you used in the garden beds(the pressure treated ones)?

  • @ms18ins . The buckets were just in my 2009 garden. Last year I did all raised beds and got rid of the buckets. I forget the exact size of the wood, but I talk all about it in my "How to Make a Raised Bed" video.
