Anyone a fan of Terry Reid first, has to appreciate the Raconteurs cover of this song, its brilliant and captured the elements flawlessly I thought. I certainly came here from Jackie White...
i've only heard this on the raconteurs album, didn't even realize it was a cover. Glad i found this, this is awesome. Can see why they wanted to cover it.
I sort of like this version better than the Raconteurs. The drummer is cooler, and it does not have double guitars. The organ player is more prominent too.
@yourtubesteak youre ignorant. jack white is a very talented guitarist and songwriter. he has a lot of respect for this music obviously. don't be a juvenile.
@putdownan8dude Talented guitarist???? How long have you been hard of hearing? The guy is a hack. As far as "songwriting" you can hear "borrowed" blues and metal riffs in just about everything he does. Top that off with a voice like a screeching weasel and you get a complete no talent like Jack White. You little groupies who like to jump on the bandwagon for the latest hip thing should pay more attention.
@yourtubesteak Jack white is far from the "latest hip thing", he has been a solid established artist for a while now. To suggest that he is untalented or a hack is straight up absurd. With respect to the blues, he has probably been one of the most original musicians in a while. You don't have to necessarily like what he has done with the genre, but to deny his ability as a great artist and innovator is wrong.
@cliffbelstein We will have to agree to disagree. Again. He can't sing. He is a lousy guitar player. He "borrows" licks all the time when he writes. Innovator? You could have fooled me.
@yourtubesteak It is a widely held opinion that Jack White is one of the greatest guitar players in rock history, and I would be inclined to agree with that assessment. If nothing else, his inclusion in the rockumentary "It Might Get Loud" is a testament to his talent and esteem in the rock world. Terry Reid is a prolific songwriter, true, but the same could be said of Jack White; they both have the necessary passion and vision to write memorable and transcendent music.
@lazydog423 Widely held opinion???? One of the greatest guitar players in rock history????? That's like saying Joe Reed is one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, or that the north pole is one of the warmest places on the planet. All you have to do is actually listen to him play to know he is a no talent hack. There is plenty of evidence of him playing live right here on youtube. There is not one area where he has any musical talent. Singer, guitar player, songwriter (song "borrower).
@yourtubesteak Your excessive use of question-marks and hyperbolic analogies does nothing to substantiate your argument. Jack White plays riffs, runs and solos at a high degree of difficulty, and his blues-rock sensibilities are both reverent and deconstructive, something that a true fan of the genre would recognize immediately. I feel compelled to remind you that in the aforementioned documentary, Jack was held to the standard of Jimmy Page and The Edge, demonstrating his status as a rock icon.
@lazydog423 The guy has no technique whatsoever. Only people who have no knowledge of the instrument at all would say things like you just stated. Jack white is nothing more than a beginner on guitar.
@yourtubesteak I've played guitar for five years, and I'm well acquainted with the techniques and musical terminology. There are few blues rock guitarists that make better use of seventh, fifth, and pentatonic scales than Jack White does, and in terms of distortion, he is only bested by pantheon-caliber figures like as Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix. I'm beginning to doubt your expertise on this matter, sir.
@lazydog423 His tone sucks. He uses a ton of effects to hide his shortcomings. You think only Page and Hendrix have better tone and distortion? Really? Almost anybody out there has better tone and cooler distortion. Listen to Satriani , Eddie Van Halen, Jeff Beck, for starters. Even rhythm guitarists like Dave Grohl have way better tone and distortion. Jack white's tone with constantly using that octave effect sucks. Again it's to try and hide his lack of talent.
@yourtubesteak I didn't say that it was ONLY Hendrix and Page, only that it was guys LIKE them that surpass him in distortion. And Van Halen and Satriani are moot because those guys are playing metal, not blues rock. Unlike in metal, where dominating a song is the point of guitar, blues rock is about complimenting emotions and using grit and angst. Van Halen and Satriani use cleaner, higher treble tones to suggest psuedo-divinity; blues rock is about the muck and hurt, hence the thicker middle.
@yourtubesteak Can you play better? Do you even play? If not, we don't need to hear your comments. If you are, I am saving some comments. You sound like a pompous ass from the Rolling Stone.
@johnnystaccata I have no need to convince you, but the simple truth is I can outplay Jack White on my worst day. After playing for about a year and a half I could play better than Jack White does now, and I have been playing for a number of years. I agree that rock writers can be jerks with out of control egos. I have come across more than one over a period of years.
@yourtubesteak Maybe you should post your own video so that we may comment on it. And mind you, it is not all about playing but how you come off overall. If you can't sing, you lost a lot of pointss right there.
@yourtubesteak I don't know much about Jack White or the Raconteurs. I do know a band called Goober and the Peas that I saw years ago. Anyway, I was mainly talking about Terry Reid. That is who is in the video. I guess Jack White is sort of off topic here. So can you sing? Where is your video posted. I think a lot of us would like to comment on it.
@yourtubesteak I truly feel for you if this is actually the way you listen to music. Things like "he can't sing", "his technique is horrible", "I can outplay him". Thats like saying you can recreate a Picasso song any day! No kidding..
Seems to me you are a technician and theres only so much musician in you. Jack White is 100% artist. Hes lives for his music, and you can feel and hear that in his music. Thats talent. Not the ability to hit that many notes perfect exactly in beat.
@yourtubesteak So I just gave you a bunch arguments of and you pick one, and compare him with other "no talent hacks". His talent is, he can transfer his passion into his music. And throw it all out with one single note. The way Hendrix did, Gallagher did and Jack White does. And which, in my opinion for instance Steve Vai fails at miserably. Though hes an insanely talented guitarist. Hes just an technician, much more than an artist.
This voice is perfect - it's raw and gentle, improvised and free but always on the button, no bum notes. I bet he never sang this song the same way twice.
Terry Reid was originally chosen by Jimmy Page as Led Zeppelin's frontman but he turned it down. If he hadn't, Robert Plant would never have gotten the job.
I like how just because the Raconteurs covered this song you feel compelled to immediately attack them. No one is saying that they're more talented than Terry Reid, but to insinuate that they're not talented is rediculous, considering they're one of the VERY FEW modern acts committed to making anything even resembling real music. They are a fantastic band, and you should probably keep quiet.
@v37kxj Cheap Trick covered one of this guys songs on their first album. And they rocked it hard and it sounds completely different then the original. But the passion from Terry Reid in his vocals on the song most likely inspired Robin Zander to develop somewhat of a smooth rasp to the tone of his vocals similar to this guy and it's rather impressive
@MrSmokeydog There's no doubt that Terry was a big influence on Robin Zander. The fact that Zander can sing "Speak now..." so well is one of the reasons I respect his vocals so much. When you look back at Terry and his time, his place, career and sheer fuckin talent during the 60's, it's almost frustrating to think of how many hugely famous singers were undoubtedly influenced by him. If only he'd been able to write songs and play guitar like a black Keith Richards...
@luckitz Cilla Black!!! Soul????? Are you havin a fuckin laugh?? You my friend talk a right load of bollocks, which was my point in the original comment I made to you...how clear is that for ya.
@luckitz Just because a white man sings with soul does not make it a "coloured voice" as you put it" You would't know a soulful voice if it jumped up and bit you on the arse m8!
The lace pattern that keeps flashing makes me laugh. So typical at the time. People were trying everything and anything. "Laugh-In" did a lot of things like this. Haven't remembered it for years upon years. lol Fun stuff. :)
Terry Reid could have easily been the voice of Led Zeppelin BUT the women really loved Plant, I'm not so sure Terry had the same sexual presence of Plant, no one did really. This guy's voice is just plain fukking incredible!!
In response to @luckitz comment 'I detest people with a 'coloured' voice' that is hes normal voice you penis and just because the title has blues in it doesn't automatically make it a blues song which it obviously isn't so how can you make any comparisons to other standard blues tracks. You're entitled not to enjoy it but your comments are ill thought through
@luckitz Sir or Madam: I hope u are not calling this artist a "Blues" faker just because it's not the predictable 3-chord, 12-bar-format crap. FYI -- Aretha Franklin (who sings a little "coloured blues" herself) said in '69: "There are only 3 things really going on in London. The Beatles. The Rolling Stones. And Terry Reid. Maybe I misunderstood your post, but if I got your meaning right.... well, if TR's legitimate enough for Aretha, he's legit enough for me.
ok this is what i dont get the beatles were good zepplin was better sabbath was the shitt but this guy is amazing how come nobosy has ever heard of terry reid cause i never heard of him til i watched teh devils rejects but his music is so amazing
Actually, After Terry Reid told Page he was going to focus on his own solo fronted project, He told Page to try out his friend who just happened to Robert Plant...Either way history wrote itself, Led Zeppelin became the well-deserving mammoth they became, Reid fell victim to bad management deals and is now the best kept secret in the history of recorded music...SO THERE
Guys! Page didn't choose to try Terry first. Page didn't know anything about Plant till after the fact. It wasn't like it was between Reid and Plant. It didn't work like that.
@gaianaful1. Are you SURE about the organist? I would've sworn it was Stevie Winwood (he plays just like him, too) Just speculating......never saw TR with this band.
if he had been a part of led zeppelin we wouldnt have albums like river nad seed of memory so im glad he did what he did sticking on his chosen career path. 100% true to himself and he can die a proud man having done that.
the main reason for reid being pages's first choice, was his ability to play 1st rythm, behind page's lead, and still be able to carry the melody. As opposed to just playing harmonica.
wtf i'm just saying he LOOKS LIKE HIM! michael jackson coudn't hold a candle to terry...i was saying terry's amazing...not how he looks like michae jackson is amazing....geez....
Did you mean to ask if Terry was rich? As far as I know - not really. He had to do some other jobs besides session musician to make ends meet and support the family. (Speaking of which, I wonder if his daughters sing... would have been interesting...)
But if Terry had taken the job we'd never have heard of Plant and could have never compared them. Plant was freakin awesome.. they're both awesome in different ways..
except for the beginning I find this version way better than the raconteur's... doesn't mean the opening is not good, but Jack somehow timed the singin' otherwise (better in my humble opinion). This version sounds really awesome! And last but not least it's the original ftw!
why is everyone saying all this? lol plant and reid are both fucking beasts, even if reid didnt get into zep its all good, we get both of there great songs.
Plant was good for Zeppelin..Jimmy Page wanted Reid at first (He also considered Steve Marriot...But Don Arden according to urban legend "Changed" His Mind) haha...And Reid was off the market due to contractual obligations and in turn suggested Plant to Page!!!
Reid also wanted to play guitar....and knew he wouldn't with Page......Deep Purple also offered him a job....again Reid wanted to sing and play guitar...it wasn't going to happen in either of those bands
when i was a young player in the 60s his voice had and stil has so much soul in a blues voice,he was somethong to aspire to and stayed true to his soul and music and held his course like the old american blues dudes,he never sold out.
I've always liked Terry and he was a mate around this time but listening to this now I'm thinking to myself just how fucking great Steve Marriott was.
Reid was offered the lead vocal position in Led zeppelin but turned the offer down cause he was opening for the stones, reid introduced robert plant to led zeppelin
Alos was offered the lead vocals in deep purple 2 years later and also turned that down. He want to sing and play guitar. He knew Page and Blackmore had the guitar covered.
@flooberbloob but then there would be no such hits like stairway to heaven, whole lotta love, babe i'm gonna leave you etc. etc. - everything went perfect and it's good as it is...
ATTN: NYC! TERRY REID is performing live at The Studio @ Webster Hall on Tuesday, April 7th 2009 at 8PM in New York City. This is a show not to miss as you know if you are watching and listening to this video now. DON'T MISS IT

Actually, After Terry Reid told Page he was going to focus on his own solo fronted project, He told Page to try out his friend who just happened to Robert Plant...Either way history wrote itself, Led Zeppelin became the well-deserving mammoth they became, Reid fell victim to bad management deals and is now the best kept secret in the history of recorded music...SO THERE
bunnyhead71 1 year ago 7
Guys! Page didn't choose to try Terry first. Page didn't know anything about Plant till after the fact. It wasn't like it was between Reid and Plant. It didn't work like that.
bigsat3 1 year ago
@bigsat3 >right...it was like Terry Reid or the end of the world. Ask Jimmy. Here's his number ----/---/----
It all worked out fine.

IS THAT BOB DYLAN ON ORGAN?
themattkalb 2 years ago
the main reason for reid being pages's first choice, was his ability to play 1st rythm, behind page's lead, and still be able to carry the melody. As opposed to just playing harmonica.
fvkfvk55 2 years ago
i still think it would have been in terrys best interest financially and career wise to have taken the job for Zepp

btw was himself the rich kid one?
i discovered TR songs only recently.
brandnwyear2010 2 years ago
Did you mean to ask if Terry was rich? As far as I know - not really. He had to do some other jobs besides session musician to make ends meet and support the family. (Speaking of which, I wonder if his daughters sing... would have been interesting...)

digoxin: yes, thanks :)

I prefer Plant's voice for Zepp
bunnyheather76 2 years ago
Yeah...Terry's ace but Plant was the right choice for zeppelin
gazboat 2 years ago 3
But if Terry had taken the job we'd never have heard of Plant and could have never compared them. Plant was freakin awesome.. they're both awesome in different ways..
DeanLisi 2 years ago 9
except for the beginning I find this version way better than the raconteur's... doesn't mean the opening is not good, but Jack somehow timed the singin' otherwise (better in my humble opinion). This version sounds really awesome! And last but not least it's the original ftw!

Plant was Zeppelin... let it go!!!
hydraIX 2 years ago
Terry Reid would have done the job Plant did, his voice lasted alot longer too, too bad Bonham didnt.
Better singer than Plant even back then, and I'm one of the biggest Zeppelin fans.
PunChonChin 2 years ago 6
his voice is all over the place and so free - you dont get that nowadays .
LOVE TERRY!

Just think though if Terry had!! :) lol

Plant was good for Zeppelin..Jimmy Page wanted Reid at first (He also considered Steve Marriot...But Don Arden according to urban legend "Changed" His Mind) haha...And Reid was off the market due to contractual obligations and in turn suggested Plant to Page!!!
hydraIX 2 years ago
Reid also wanted to play guitar....and knew he wouldn't with Page......Deep Purple also offered him a job....again Reid wanted to sing and play guitar...it wasn't going to happen in either of those bands

when i was a young player in the 60s his voice had and stil has so much soul in a blues voice,he was somethong to aspire to and stayed true to his soul and music and held his course like the old american blues dudes,he never sold out.

Terry is a better singer now. Very clear, less Joplinesque. 40 years is a long time to master your craft.

Yeah, it can be hard to understand when he's really into it. And the horrible quality of the vid doesn't help. But man, he does have a voice. :)

Reid would have rocked with Zep AND they would have had two good guitarists..
flooberbloob 2 years ago 31
Reid was offered the lead vocal position in Led zeppelin but turned the offer down cause he was opening for the stones, reid introduced robert plant to led zeppelin
Rubokoppen 2 years ago
Alos was offered the lead vocals in deep purple 2 years later and also turned that down. He want to sing and play guitar. He knew Page and Blackmore had the guitar covered.
Geizjr 2 years ago
Makes sense. Gotta give it to him for staying his course. I'd have preferred his voice to Plant though.
trebor166 2 years ago
Well Plant is good, I mean back in the day he was REALLY good now it sounds like an old haggard voice. Reid is amazing!
dmholmes1 2 years ago
@flooberbloob but then there would be no such hits like stairway to heaven, whole lotta love, babe i'm gonna leave you etc. etc. - everything went perfect and it's good as it is...
