This is one of the only videos that I've seen that actually talks about the SETUP, which is the whole secret to a successful dock. If you don't set the move up correctly in the first place, you can make the whole process much harder than it needs to be. Thanks for a good vid!
Nice clean job as far as getting it docked quickly with no pull-ups...but did I miss the part where you got out to open the doors for the Mallwart drones? :)
@dmta ... it takes extremely little correction to back a smaller trailer. Every little move is exaggerated in the back end of the trailer, so try using smaller maneuvers to get into the dock. The other thing is, forget that there are other / better / more experienced drivers sitting there watching you, and watch your trailer ... seriously, nobody is counting pull-ups! Just take your time & do it right ... aka: don't scuff nothing!! :)
i am traing at new penn motor freight got my cdl in september i was learning in a 2 axel with a 48 foot trailer now at new penn im training on a single axel with 40 foot i cant seem to get the hang of alley docking with the smaller truck and thats all they run any sugestions? i line up my truck all what u did and still cant get it pluse the terminal i am at i have to jack the trailer to get in
@dmta You can use your bubble mirrors to increase your feild of view. Shorter trailers usually take less steering wheel movement to get your angle going & more steering wheel movement to catch the truck back up (if that makes any sence). It really does come down to practice, & setting up better.
For people just getting started in trucking, the hardest thing about backing up a trailer is in the intimidation factor of manuevering such a large vehicle. But that will fade over time and with experience. Backing up a 53ft trailer really isnt that hard, technically speaking. The longer your trailer, the slower it will turn and/or get away from you. If you can back up a camper or a boat reasonably well, you'll be able to handle a LONG trailer easily.
not bad but alot was missing in my opinion and things where done wrong for it to be called a tutorial so students or beginners need not look at this unless you want to pick out what was done wrong with the video
@TheNorsewarlord Not so much of a tutorial, just an example for those just getting into trucking an alley dock. I did it to the best of my ability, and for the amount of time I had. Perhaps you should make one to give me a better idea of what I should have done in mine...and maybe i'll remake it if I ever get back in an otr rig. lol trying to recreate it in the cabover & set of doubles I pull now prolly wouldn't help the guy just getting into the industry.

Where you continue to crank to the right I need a video that shows to the left because there is no room.

where is the 'alley'?
jalag 7 months ago
@jalag "alley dock" is just the term for the manuver. For CA DMV drivers test you must perform an alley dock, & there is not even a dock!

I don't know anything about backing a semi/trailer, but you make it look effortless!
Fine work,

Good little tutorial! Not too bad for one handed backing WHILE filming!
