  • This is the camera Aaron from Ghost Adventures uses.

  • I just saw that camera on a porn movie.

  • I would let someone shoot me in the arm or leg if after I can have this cam for free.

  • thank you for the review, i nearly bought 3 nx1 cameras this week. i am putting a little extra money into 2 of these, and a few accessories. thanks again.

  • I'll be shooting my first film in 2 months. What's a good entry level camera to shot hi action scenes like sports (soccer) in? This camera looks great. I have two FX7 HD (Sony) they shoot beautiful live shows but now I'm doing film. For 10grand this camera maybe the ticket.

  • this camera gives me a girl boner. I WANT IT

  • What kind of tripod mount is that? I have always wondered that

  • Nice one.... This is Sahil Ramrakhia.. from India... we are planing to shoot an experimental movie... on EX3.. Without any lens.. can u suggest me a lans to hire... We are going to make the Bollywood's Lowest Budget Movie.. thats why we are shooting on EX3...

    Pls help me out... thnx

  • @cubeproduktion Perhaps those people that call it hand held are really strong? Just saying...

  • these can be bought for much less cash from china. Does anyone know if its dodgy to but from China - yes or no?

  • @willzer808 probably...

  • @willzer808, I buy stuff from HongKong through DigitalRev on eBay. They are pretty good.

  • @willzer808 "is it dodgy to buy from China?" Is that a real question, haha. My vote would be yes on most things, and thats from my experiences.

  • why do people call camcorders like the EX1 or the XF300 hand-held if they are heavy to use hand-held?

  • I wonder why the EX2/EX3 aren't listed under the Cinealta section of the official website. Especially since they both have Cinealta printed on the side of them.

  • But still a 1/3" chip...

  • That's a great video; as soon as you watch it you log in to your bank account online to see what's left!

The question is if it worths buying one of these cameras (EX-3) when you already own a EX-1?

  • This review was excellent. Would love to see an instructional version, showing all the tips and pitfalls. Well done!

  • is it easy to put the videos up and put them on youtube ?

  • EXCELENTE DEMO

  • isn't it funny that big HD Camcorder reviews are mostly not in HD? :)

  • What happend? I used to die for this kind of things, my biggest dream in my entire life was to be a professional cameraman. Now I dont even think about it.. amazing how much ppl can change with time.. :/

  • @TheUploader1 Maybe you should stop drinking.

  • @muppetchile

I think I'm a responsible drinker for age 16..however that has nothing to do with what I wrote on my other comment...

  • Can I put 1/2" SONY SD lens on this camera? For example, I have several lenses from my DVCAM DSR-300 camera package. Will these lenses fit the EX3 without a conversion mount?

  • Is this a camera or is this a vengeance? LOL

  • nice ring?

  • My friends friend owns one of these.... I really need a camera to shoot my film on but i can't really afford one of these...

  • how much is this worth?

  • @OfficialBEtv

You mean what the price of the PMW-EX3 is? $13,000 when it came out in 2008.

  • muic? brian eno? saw him live at the science museum last year nice man.

    glad you did this review.

    simon

  • I like the Eno

  • I got to use this camera on a Jib with a Mechanical head at work the other day, so much fun. Great Camera.

  • Just got this camera from Creative video. Tank you Philipbloom for these good video you make :)

  • tem dublado ?

  • I would love to get a hold of this camera but sadly they cost near 10k :(

  • Anybody using one of these in an Avid workflow? I have a shoot coming up & being steered toward EX-3; Avid seems to endorse it but would like to hear from an Avid editor.

  • Dream

Heavy to use the MP4 format on F Cut HD express

    Good feel

    Minus points

Not robust from where I borrowed, 2 of there Ex3's were out of action with broken insides,

liked to try different lense's as well!!

    8/10

    would have one

  • Hey................I like your videos, and after listening to some of them, can tell that you are very in tune with camcorders................I would like to ask you if there is any reason that I see a big difference in alot of shooting situations using my panasonic ag dvc20p? It does only have 1/8" 3 ccd sensors, and it looks pro, but not like some like the sony...........I paid 1500 for it from sonic cameras in NY online.....tks for any info......and let me know if I could get a better one..TC

  • lol ur never gunna get an answer, he never responds to comments on his video

  • i dont know man, im selling my XL2, but the EX3 footage doesnt really impress me... i think i'll go for the Canon XLH1

I simply dont care about the buttons and light on the EX3, it's the quality of the image that has to be good.. And the EX3 footage ive seen sucks compared to the XLH1 footage

  • Awesome, exactly the sort of information I was hoping to hear when I searched for 'ex3'. I'm surprised & happy.

  • Oh my god, the Philip Bloom! Mate I've seen you all over the internet!

  • Great video... this is the camera the video-guy on the new Melrose Place uses...

  • GIEF PL0X

  • can anyone tell me what is the advantage of using 2/3 inch glass on the pmw ex3 does that make it look any better then the 1/2 inch glass that comes with it ?

  • OK Guys - objectively - which is the better camera - the new Canon XL-H1 or this?

  • This by a country mile. IMHO

  • I had a chance to see the Canon and EX1 side by side at a local film show on the large theater (EX1 is the fixed lens version of EX3 for $3K less) and I was sold on the EX1.

Granted, the DP was a big impact ... but everyone loved the Sony film. I bought the Sony and love it for low light.

  • ex 3 is better

  • If you change the frame rates, does it still play back @ 24 fps? Or is it possible to under crank or over crank this camera?

  • Also RED is not actually a 4 k it is 2.5 k it does not have the color information e.t.c that the f23 has. But no one will know that because how many people have access to 4 k displays! Not saying the Red is a bad camera but you are getting what you pay for a hyped up prototype that still has lots of compatibility problems. ex3, a nice letus extreme d.of and prime lens gets you arguably as good quality as a Red with cheap lens at half the price plus no kinks to iron out.

  • A) Rent Great Glass

    B) Red has a Nikon mount which you can put cheap, sharp glass on it

    C) The RED is 4K, it has a 4k sensor, it records 4k RAW and is converted to 4K RGB. Just because it doesn't 4096 lined of red green and blue, doesn't mean it's not 4k. It has the 4096 lines in horizontal resolution anyway.

  • If you want to buy the Red one with cheap lenses then you will get an image that looks soft, soft, soft, it does not compare to cameras like the f23 unless you spend about 100k on prime lenses. A cheap Red package is only going to be marginally better than an ex3 with descent primes id rather save 15k and buy 2 ex3s with nice primes and not have everything look soft but thats just me bursting the hype bubble.

  • I'd really Love to own one someday very soon.

  • Great review, Philip!

  • I'd Love one!

  • I was told this is great prosumer camera to start with until i have enough money to afford the RED ONE, is it true?

  • the red one is like 100,000 bucks incase u didn't know, also this camera is pretty advanced so if you want something to START off with, i'd go with like a canon xl2, or canon xh a1 or something along the lines of that, there much less expensive and have great picture quality, the xl2 is standard def and the xh a1 is hd

  • which one would you buy, the xha1 or the xha1s?

  • xha1

  • The Red One is not 100,000. It is 17500 for the body, and you add components from there. I put together a perfectly functional package for under 30,000. Still not cheap, but certainly more affordable than any other 4K camera on the market (most of which ARE over 100,000) not to mention most other digital cinema cameras.

You don't want to make the mistake of just buying a Red One and assuming you can just start shooting. It's a precision tool, and requires understanding and practice.

  • i know its not 100 000 but i was trying to make a point for him by saying its very pricey, he thought it was a prosumer camera and its defiantly not, i was just letting him know. Do you actually own a red one?

  • Fair enough, I did not mean to offend.

I do own a Red One, #3306. I love it.

  • wow, I am jealous... The things I would do for one would put me in jail

  • hi, i am shooting a feature film which i am going to blow it up to 35mm for cinema production for my countery , 1. i am using pmw ex3 + m2 redrock , 2- i am recording the sound with two boom mic going to shour mixer and the out to the ex3 camera, for cinema production is there any thing else i need to consider before shooting?

  • don't use the shure mixer

get a sound devices mixer 302 - much cleaner sound

  • Ok presentation but sony do not convience that the product worth the money. He said low resoloution in the view finder and a shaky ND switch.I do not invest my hard earn money in company faults tried it already piling junk to catch up keeping companies with faults rich .

  • not to sound like spam, but you should really watch chillingchimp, i think you'de like em

  • PHILLIP i have seen your work, brother you do super nice work, love the presentation on EX3 im getting one, looking forward to any new work you put out there. god speed

  • beautiful.

  • I just got one of these, however I havent been able to get the shoulder mount to come out yet.

  • wicked

  • i fuckin love this camera, well the ex1

great and i use everyday, watch my timelapse videos to see with your own eyes

  • PS: Would love to get a DOF adapter on it.

  • But I've used it hand held a couple of times and 10mins in your arms will start to feel the burn. I've also found the stock lenses focus ring stops working. I literally have to turn the camera off and then back on... Which is a pain when it take 10secs to boot.

  • shame there wasn't more on his thoughts about picture quality...

  • picture quality is identical to ex1 hence i didnt comment on it

  • oh okay - I use an EX3 everyday at work and love it to bits. Just a shame the 8GB cards from sony cost so much. We bought a load of kensington adapters with SD cards and they work great. Can't over crank though. I love the idea of a shoulder mount.

  • Hi Phillip,

Just watched your review about the EX3. Just one question- would you recommend this camera to a wannabe documentary/HD film maker, such as myself, over, say, the Canon XLHD? If you could answer, I'd be very grateful, as I'm in the market for my first camera!

    Cheers,

    Simon.

  • Hi Philip - Thanks for the great review. Very useful. I have a few questions -

1/ Have you got one yet?

2/ Do you know if this the same camera that Gareth Edwards used for his cheap budget film 'Monsters'?

3/ I understand he used a Letus 35mm lens adapter. Is that the most economical adapter?

  • i dont get how ppl can afford all this..I wish film equipment wasnt so expensive :(

  • It;s because it's a pro cam and not a consumer one :)

  • this is not expensive! when i started out a camera of equivalent quality would have set you back over £60k. This is a price breakthrough, 1/2inch full hd solid state etc...

  • @philipbloom True, but you gotta think: This is YouTube, where most viewers/creators make videos for fun and extremely cheap. Nice review, tho.

  • @msteelman You get a loan out ;)

Or make a low budget film, hope it makes millions then buy the big ass camera! But sadly its highly unlikely that can happen... LOL

  • @msteelman - are you on crack? It's a work tool not a toy for your personal fun.

  • @msteelman you could always try gettng a job and save up for one ...HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA ive just bought 2 for my film company and they are excellent camera ...ahahahahhahahahahahahaha...and phil bloom is a good mate bloomo to his close mates ...

  • @msteelman Maxed out credit. :P

  • @msteelman If you get the projects to support the cost, it's not expensive.

  • my problem: i can't really HOLD this camera - same as pmw-ex1. i'd need three hands. to film with the shoulder filming is totally different...does anyone know this problem?

  • Hi Phillip

Thanks for the clip. Can you advice me on the best lens to use with the lextus adapter on the EX3?Also,where can i hire a lextus adapter in london?thanks

  • Here's the problem though for us in the news business. You cannot put video back onto the camera. You cannot take in external video. Does anyone know different? We called Sony and they said it's not possible. Kinda of dissapointing.

  • sony didn't fixe the rolling shutter issue of EX1 and here comes EX3,why sony keep using CMOS chips? go google 'rolling shutter issue of CMOS' for yourself and you'll see,RED ONE got the same problem i believe so do SCARLET,because they use CMOS too, can't believe this!

  • Fantastic product - got mine delivered fast this week at a great price from Bentonville Mall.

  • excellent video, my bad boy comes this weekend. Sweeeet.

  • HOW Much do you people pay for this baby??? I want one of this, but my budget dont let me in this moment. Is this better than the Canon XL2??

  • of course it is

  • I'd love one of those cameras. Just having to wait for the SXS cards to come down in price though and up in GBs :-(.

    You have some great videos!

  • How professional does this camera film?

  • did you buy one yet? i'm looking to get one.

  • If you like this cam, take a look at the Red Scarlet -- a 3K cam for under $3000 -- incredible 3072 line hor res !!! not until early 2009 -- can't wait!!!

  • Yes Red Scarlet is an incredible camera.. 2/3" on such a tiny sucker. Scarlet + letus + b4 mount?

  • yeah but you cant even buy one yet any they are completely redoing the whole cam

  • Good to know of the choices. will have to try one out. and save some money...

Oh, also your work has been a real inspiration!

  • Philip thanks for the clip! Can't wait to rent one out!

If it takes 1/2" or 2/3 inch, would it be better off using a P+S Pro35 adaptor? (less glass) Anyone know how the Pro 35 adaptor work or 1/2 inch sensors instead of 2/3?

  • the letus ultimate with have a new 1/2 relay like pro 35 but better

  • Sweet tripod.

  • Fantastic camera and review! All those features raise the bar for all manufactures in this market - the future seems bright indeed.

  • please god don't use cmos please!!!!

  • Same here. Rolling Shutter blows.

The Z1U and FX1 are the last CCD based prosumer HD cameras left from Sony... While Canon has their entire prosumer line-up with native HDV resolution CCDs.

The SI-2K has a global shutter CMOS. Sony needs to follow them for their next camera.

  • Yeah no kidding man! CMOS for still camera.. SURE! low power consumption! and fast! but I can't understand why they keep putting that crap on camcorders!

  • Have you SEEN the footage out of the EX1 & EX3??? It makes the FX1/Z1 look like miniDV.

Stop being nerds. Anyways, no matter what you buy, you'll never shoot more than wedding videos or Star Wars fan films with it.

  • umm yeah, i have, thanks man, you're so awesome! I worship you! and we actually shoot commercials as well. soo ummm yeah, ummmmm like totally!

  • Even though this is a ridiculously great camera, there's no way I could invest in it over the EX1, simply because it doubles the price. Not to mention that the EX3 is a camera that I could not use to its fullest with my finances; features like the interchangeable lens is not something that I would benefit from, simply because I couldn't afford good lenses. I do however love the viewfinder/LCD screen feature, the new shape and the new controls (eg.framerate button = a HUGE bonus)..

  • I'm hoping for a trade-in deal also.

  • - forgot - i heard that the EX3 will be nearly double the price of the EX1... Still worth it?

  • Hi Phil, nice video! Im a big admirer of your work - especially "My autums done come". I bought the EX1 the day it came out in Denmark. I use it for short-film, corporate and studiowork. The genlock, changable lenses and shoulder-mount would be really nice, so im thinking of "upgrading" when it gets out. But do you think we will be able to get anything for our EX1s by then? Or do you think Sony will offer a trade-in deal? Best Regards

  • Wow....

  • The Camera I've been waiting for!
