This skit always made me sad when I was a child-- seeing the eagle fly away with the egg and imagining how the queen must have felt. Watching it now is a huge nostalgia trip.
The music always gave me chills. at 9 years old, it was a musical awakening. I don't think I ever heard a sitar before this. The story is so bittersweet.
This has always haunted me too. So beautiful. I thought I heard Sesame Street doesn't provide animated segments anymore. If not, what a shame. It's pieces like this that stand out in my mind more so than Big Bird or Oscar the Grouch!
I can't believe I'd be able to watch this E song from Sesame Street again. How I loved it then, and upto now I still like the song. Now I'm in nostalgia... yearning for the other letter songs from late 70s, 80s era. Thank you for sharing!

How is it possible that a group of people who just wanted to help poor inner-city children learn their letters and numbers were able to create something so beautiful, that forty-odd years later, just about every one of us between the ages of 30 and 45 starts bawling when they watch this video? Truly, this is art.
I would love to find out who wrote the song and I would love to get a copy of it. It's embedded in my mind and a part of my life. I saw this clip when I was about 6 and in Jamaica. That was 39 years ago!!
I loved this as a kid. Still get a lil misty eyed. But what a distraction 2 steal the Queens Easter egg. A beagle & a baby seal. LOL! I still love the music of this.
I have this on DVD. And it is fun to watch it. I also really like it how the indian music accompanies this song. And those of you who don't know what episode this is from, this is from the first episode.
I wish I Knew who wrote the music for this, tears came to my eyes, it carried me back to the age of my innocence, I'm a child of the 70s and this was one of my favorite clips, soothing` and sentimental, rightfully trippy and wonderfully my childhood, of purity
@trinitothebone1 ....I blubber when I see this too.....so nostalgic ....I am so influenced by this ....I feel so old . Wish I could bring this feeling to others.
I agree completely. Seeing this clip takes me back to being four years old (I'm nearly 43), to a place of safety and security, when I would watch Sesame Street with my mom, and all was right with the world. I get really emotional seeing this.
This music has been churning thru my brain for the last 35 years. It is beautiful and haunting at the same time. This is one of the best SS clips I remember!! Thanks so much for posting this!!
The music for the jazzy spies has also been lurking in my head since I was 5 also.
I loved this as a kid! The music stuck with me and has probably influenced my songwriting style too as a professional now. And that image of the eagle at sunset too....sigh... So glad to find this clip!
Four things are happening at once - the watercolor dreaminess of the art, the imaginative poetry, the lazy, psychedelic music, and the gentle voice. In one minute and three seconds, they managed to capture childhood.
I have heard the music for this video elsewhere. Can anyone name the tune or composer? (Perhaps it was covered as a "legit" song by some famous artist or group, after it achieved immortality on Sesame Street?)
Like so many other comments. This song and clip has been in my memory for years—probably my favorite SS short. The song seemed to connect me to the universe and the spirit world—even at 4. Was like a drug for a little kid. EXCELLENT.
I've been searching for this for a long time... whenever I heard Led Zeppelin's "Going to California", it reminded me of this... I picture the eagle flying away with the princess...Strange association...Thanks for posting!
I am so glad that this is part of my childhood. I was born in 67, and haven't heard this since 72 or 73! My God, it's been haunting my memories for 36 years, and to see it finally, it's just as profoundly stirring and surreal and sad as it was when I was 5. Spellbinding. It was amazing to see and hear this back then, with the mind of a five year old, having it affect me the way it did, and not have the ability to understand why. What do 5 year olds have now? Blues Clues.
Ain't it amazing what memories we choose to hold on to, and which ones that hold onto us? That sitar and that tambura drone and the eagle flying into that sunset have invaded my memories for so long, lurking around as I drift into sleep or as I wake up, and it's breathtaking to hear it again. And that VOICE........Just magic.
It can bring tears to my eyes too. The narrator whispers something after he says "over the evening sea". Sounds like "she she. she she." I've always wondered what he says.
Appeared in the first episode, in November of '69. Brilliant educational short on long E. The sitar track reminiscence of Led Zeppelin's Going to California. Evening skies over the seas are ridiculous. Top 5 SS short.
This was one of my favorites--just beautifully put together. The combination of the sitar and the narrator's voice really create that dreamy ambience. Old school rules!
I'm 44 now & I remember this xact spot as if I was 4yrs old again. On a cold & rainy atum afternoon, watching SS on the floor. Smelling whatever mom was making the family for dinner. I've been humming that haunting melody for decades. It just grabs at the core of me. l knew it was a special time back then, even as child ....God, How l miss my mom.
I agree with all that you say....it's funny how most of the folks here were touched by such a simple melody. Isn't it funny how music speaks to us "Universally" regardless of what language we speak?......

skydog67 said it best. A further note- the music seems to be "quoting" the song "September in the Rain" to an extent... anyone else agree?
