  • Could you post a list of what is in your sundries kit in the Description? It would be much appreciated :)

  • Try a clear lighter you can see how much fuel is left

  • Where do you get the little ziploc baggies?

  • Those lights are called 'Fauxtons' in the light community...

  • That's one well stocked gear closet !

  • You could look at shops like Daiso for more tiny toothpaste. Actually, Daiso is great for a lot of tiny things.

  • I LOVE YOUR GEAR CLOSET! :D

  • what is stik pik? thx karen

  • Thanks Jason! I used this idea on my backpacking trip in Southeast Asia.

  • Is it possible to refill the toothpaste tube with a plastic medicine syringe used for dispensing kids medication?

  • If your still thinking about upgrading your headlamp get a fenix ld10 with the fenix head band.

  • Yeah, "ditty bag" is what I'd call it. Good assortment of sundries you've got. About the toothpaste, don't worry about not getting more. Crest makes these mini tubes that are about double the size of yours, but still very light weight. You won't notice the difference. And I'd also agree you should take along some duct tape. You can roll some around a small PVC tube or even a spent Sharpie. A little can go a long way. :-)

  • TP should be on or close to the top

  • First off great video - I always enjoy seeing what other people pack for trips... but i would like to add, unless you are using some weird toilet paper - ALL toilet paper is biodegradable. Some is made to dissolve more quickly than others, some is made from recycled materials, but they all are biodegrade.

  • Do you hang your kit with your food since it has toothpaste, brush, and cleaner that has a sweet smell?

  • How much does that bag weigh total including the bug spray and sun protection?

  • "Ditty bag", old sailor's term, very dear, sailors sewed & customized'em themselves. Also 'housewife' (Brit). Had maybe 20 over 30+ years. Original was a Vietnam era ALICE pack pocket liner of rubberized (not urethane) nylon. Then a "personal effects" pouch from a bodybag. Then a nylon/zip with pockets custom tailored in Pakistan. You get the picture. Currently a Granite Gear zip silnylon.

No DUCT TAPE man? Never again leave the house without it!

Get yer 'lil toothpaste at "minimus"

  • @brimstone33 gorilla tape dominates it, but yeah, tape is indispensible.

  • what kind of fire steel was that? whwere do i get one? thx karen

ps watch ur vids over/overi love them ....karen

  • I do not understand why you carry a bandanna.

  • Yea I have one and I call it the o shit bag

  • I carry GERM X in my Day hiking pack also and I really didnt think about it being a good fire starter until now , so thanks

  • I want to go hiking with you

  • Interesting video. Nice and informative. I was surprised to see you use a Rite in the Rain journal and Space Pen. These things are so much more expensive than a short pencil and a packet of three for a dollar, palm/hand size composition books, kept in a zip lock. I cannot imagine anyone buying these two items that cost so much more. If a comp book gets wet, the pencil will run, slightly, but you'll still be able to read the journal. Doesn't make sense. Plus: They're lighter.

  • just curious if this is the granite gear 2L or 3L air bag....want to get the same one.

    thanks

  • Have you tried a toothpaste/toothbrush combo? I know that Camp Mor(no e) sells one by/called Aurelle Toob Refillable Toothbrush. It's $4.50. They sell some pretty neat stuff there at a fraction of even Walmart. Just go to: campmor(dot)com and enter the item number 85400.

  • Hey instead of having to watch out for those tooth paste tubes when you run out you could just get red slurpee straws from seven 11 and cut it in half fold one side and tape it and then put the open side into a normal colgate toothpaste then squeeze the tooth paste until the straww is full then close the open end with a small rubber band

  • Replace your toothpaste with some bakingsoda in a small plastic baggie.

    cheers

  • I have the Princeton Tec EOS, The Tikka XP and the Tikka XP2, as well as a few others. I use mine frequently for camping, working on my 4Runner, etc. and favor the Tikka XP headlamps by quite a bit. The XP2 clips the light in low light mode and it's a lot more efficient but it does strobe in order to do this. It can be slightly annoying when trying to conserve batteries while reading or doing some other long task. Overall though it's my headlamp of choice.

  • The Ability to have a wide or narrow beam is a very nice feature. I still haven't used the red LED yet. The Tikka XP 2 is the headlamp I recommend to my friends.

  • excellent vid

  • hi jason. i am a 55 yr old lady in nova scotia. i am a stroke survivor and still love going in the woods. i take my backpack with me & love to fish. your videos gave me great ideas especially the ultralight ideas. i love them thank you. pardon the typing i don't have full use of my left hand yet. keep going. my motto is: with a small token of spirit in your backpack, you will travel great distances. thank you..cougar

  • I can't get Mtbikem video reply to open without error anybody have this? I have contacted him and it seems to play ok for him. I tryed my Mac and PC nothing.

  • You can refill your highly coveted small tooth paste tube. Just hold the open end up to a larger tube, opening to opening. Then squeeze the full one. If youre holding tight enough the paste will flow from one to the other. I do this all the time to fill up my small travel size.

  • Nice video. I do have a bag like this. I call it a "ditty" bag. I don't know why. It's probably some military term I pick up from the firehouse or something. My bag is a patagonia stuff sack from a jacket my wife bought. She didn't use the stuff sack so I took it. Wet Wipes! Leave the TP at home. Wet Wipes for everything. I like the cotton pads too. I'll be adding them to my kit for wound care. Great videos Jason. Please keep them coming. Arson.

  • hey, i had a toothpaste tube like that, you can refill them if you try. I attached a small piece of tubing to the top of my crest toothpaste and the other end to my small tube and filled it up.

  • I do carry something just like it. Mine is actually an old zippered pencil case. I call it my toiletry kit as it has the TP, Hand Sanitizer, squeeze light, compass, waterproof matches, chapstick, Glasses lens cleaning cloth, Basic survival pack (candle, whistle, reflector ect)`and basic first aid kit. I have a main first aid kit as well but for simple cut cleaning and bandaging I keep a few in my toiletry kit.

  • British people call it the "Possibles Pouch".

I don't attach so much hype and mystery to this as the Europeans do, so I call it simply my misc. bag.

I have two. For backpacking, it has my repair kit, backup light, extra batteries, backup compass, rope, small knife and striker. Just enough to survive.

For my old junker (rest in peace), it had everything from jumper cables, fuses, extra wires, wrench set and a few other things that goes with the paranoia that accompanies owners of American cars.

  • Man, what a bad ass kit! Only thing I'd change is the Kelty cord to 550 paracord. I'm sure you are well-informed about 550, so you obviously have your own reasons for carrying the Kelty stuff. And THANKS for mentioning mason's string, I used to be a concrete worker and didn't even think of using this annoying string I use everyday in a backpacking kit - the stuff is extremely strong and also typically comes in bright neon colors which is a plus sometimes.

  • cologate wisps work great for toothbrush and toothpaste all in one.

  • hey man, what kind of lint did you show us? I tried to look it up and could'nt fint it. Also, why did you switch up on your headlamps?

  • Lint? It's from my dryer. As for the headlamp, the Tikka was lighter and more compact than the EOS. But Now I want the Tikka plus because it also has a red light. My work is never done!

  • lol, sorry about that, flint, not lint, my typo, lol. I did happen to find your video on it and got the info I needed

  • I call it my SOS bag....sack of sh**. I refill my small toothpaste tube with regular toothpaste using a 10ml syringe used for giving babies medicine. Any pharmacy has them, just ask for a dose syringe.

  • awesome video!!!!!

  • Great Video 5/5. Have you considered packing Vaseline Lip Therapy in the small tubes? You can get Target's brand 2 for $1. It is small, light and a dual use item. You can use it for it's intended use, lip therapy, and it's petroleum jelly so it can be used to extend the life of your tinder. Also were did you get your sewing kit? I have one but it's too big, your kit looks perfect.

  • That's actually a VERY good tip. I might try that. As for the sewing kit, I got it at my local supermarket: King Sooper's. Don't know if you have that chain where you are but it was only 3 bucks or something.

  • Was that vinyl pouch with the snap the original container the sewing kit came in? I've seen similar sewing kit's before but what caught my attention is that vinyl pouch. The other sewing kits I've seen seem to have the same contents but come in hard plastic containers that will most likely end up breaking. If you bought the vinyl pouch seperately do you remember where you purchased it? Thanks.

  • Yes, it came with the kit.

  • JASON --- Baking soda -it can replace your -- pepto , bee sting, sunburn stuff, tooth paste.poison ivy treatment, and a whole lot more . P.S. dont forger your tweezers

  • nice vid. I was waiting for you to pull out the kitchen sink. Man you pack a lot in that little bag. Good job.

  • I call it my Ditty Bag.

Gotta love the "beauty pads". A stack of them, soaked with denatured alcohol, under a pot, will make an emergency stove!

  • @MrBillTroop73

    Yep.

  • I have about the same bag setup. But its a red bag. Easy to find but also easy for my hiking buddies to find if needed "grab the red bag"

  • Thanks for the review (also for bringing the Nano fire starter to our attention). Happy New Year.

  • I call it my junk drawer.

  • @KickRocks5000

I like that name! Much more creative than "Sundries Kit"

  • Great video. I would suggest not carrying all three of your fire starters in one place. Maybe keep the flint on your person.

I call mine the "Junk Drawer".

  • @rongallant

That's a good point. I do carry one mini Bic in a separate place so I have at least 2 stashes.

  • I carry one. I don't really have a name for it. But sometimes, I call it a "go bag". I can grab it and go.

  • I don't have a name for it but I do carry it and it has pretty much everything you had. I also have chapstick and a larger fire kit with esbit fuel tabs in case all my wood is wet. As far as a tooth brush I like the new Wisp burshes it has the tooth pase in the brush and they only weigh a few grams. Do you carry extra batteries for your flashlight?

  • @velo0826

No, I don't usually carry extra batteries unless I'm going our for a really long trip. I use Lithium batteries so they don't wear down as much when it's cold at night.

  • "Possibles" bag.

  • @hoz49

    Good name.

  • You might want to refill that toothpaste tube

with your household toothpaste and a syringe. you can pick them up at your craft stores and such for gluing items and other purposes and they have tips that are like teardrops that will do the job just rite. Saves on airfare to China plus you'll help to reduce and reuse. Just a thought!

  • @Nufriend3

    That's a good tip. Thanks!

  • Try going on ebay to get the toothpaste.

  • My bag is very similar to yours. I have no name for it. I use one of the zippered Granite Gear silnylon bags - easier to dig around and find stuff.

I consider hand sanitizer essential in the wilderness. Alcohol based hand sanitizer does not cause mutation of germs or lowering of the immune system - that's a myth.

Instead of toothpaste I bring a small container of tooth powder. It works well and seems to have less environmental impact.

  • Isn't deet rather dangerous.

I carry an EDC bag and it contains most of the things you showed.

  • also alcohol kills cells, which later become "food" for bacteria. So alcohol is not good in the long run

  • please don't use hand sanitizer, all it does is make the stronger bacteria stronger... Sure it's great short term, but long term it's gunna screw us all over

  • @ledzeppie You're wrong. Alcohol does not cause mutation of bacteria. Certain antibiotics and biocides do, but as of yet there is no evidence of bacterial strains developing immunity to alcohol. It would be very unlikely due to the way it works.

  • Nice vid, as usual! :)

  • Some people call it "pinch bag" in Japan. I don't know if this is a correct English word.

I always carry 1 ounce of Lugol's solution to disinfect water and wounds on top of many things. I prefer to use a red pouch, distinguishable for emergency.

  • ahh don't use hand sanitizer to clean wounds man... alcohol impedes the healing process

  • I'm w/ pineapplenewton1, I also put all that stuff into different outside pockets on my pack. I find it's easier to get at those items when they're accessable w/out opening the pack's main compartment. I keep toiletries in a rigid plastic box w/ a hinged lid. That way I can open the box & set it on a rock & everything in it is easy to grab & the box provides a solid, sanitary platform for all those items that you really want to keep dirt off of.

  • I use a circa 1987 Outdoor Research organizer bag that unzips and rolls out flat. It has a netted, zip up pouch I keep all my hygene/first aid items in ziploc bags, aquapure as well as my vacuum venom kit. (used it/works). The fold out portion has various size slide in pouches that hold sissors, toenail clippers, micro-screwdriver, can opener, utensils, thermarest patch kit, bandages, spare ziplocs, wire rope, sewing kit, spare lighter, matches, batteries, lightbulbs, razor, and pot grabber.

  • great video i love seeing people's EDC hiking gear like this! thanks!

  • I put my toothpaste in a little 1 oz flip top lid poly container.

  • i don't carry a stuff sack all of that goes on the exterior pouches on my pack.

  • Where can one get the , "stick pic" ?

  • DUDE! Are you paying attention? I can't send a link in this post but Google it man!

  • Thanks dude !

  • 5/5m8

  • Great idea !
