Could you play in front of the highest serious pure pure surely trustive king or queen or me ? Till 2 paragraves,I hope to hear with this philosophy.

  • There's nothing like Bach: The god of music.

  • cómo toca!!!!

  • Beautiful!

  • Very fine! Haochen.....

  • Very fine!

  • Nobody cant beat Glen Gould at Bach,

check this out to see how this piece should really be played. AND, thumbs up so others can see for future reference.

    /watch?v=_miM6sjklJE

  • @PlancksTime Thumbs down. And you're right "Nobody CAN'T beat Glenn Gould." meaning everyone CAN beat him. And spell his name right at least. Gould was a psychopath overrated freak who destroyed the composer's intentions. THIS GUY'S BACH IS JUST AS GOOD, BUT EVEN BETTER.

  • @goodguysdoll Gould was talented but I agree over rated. A few of his interpretations of Bach are just plain weird and strange. I'm wondering if he was partly autistic, which helped him with a mystique that stood out.

The draw of Gould in my opinion was that he was exceptionally authentic because of his was wrapped up socially and psychologically in his own world, and didn't pander to others in the way he played. Being eccentric and deeply authentic on some way seem to go hand in hand.

  • I really like it! I found the fugue to be a little too uniform for my taste, but it was an interesting and convincing interpretation nonetheless. Very nice! :)

  • You play Bach very well. You can hear the lines perfectly. It's all clean and even. Very Bach-like. Well done! Thanks for uploading it was a pleasure to hear this!

  • His playing style strikes me as very Russian... which you usually see mostly in Russian pianists (Surprise!). But all my favorite pianists are Russian, so I see that as a good thing.

  • Very Very well played and Well executed tempo, the texture does not over power the essence of how Bach should be played. Anyone CAN play Bach but not everyone can execute a BACH....considering it is being played in a clavicembalo pianoforte. He didnt DROWN it. Bravo!!!

  • your comments just tell all what a fool you are nothing intelligent said shows you up .AND NONE OF U CAN PLAY HAHA! at eleven he played Chopin etudes better than u allcan play a simple bmaj scale (it lies n da hand even for monkeys)

  • haochen zhang rocks

  • One word: Flawless.

  • ああ~ なんてステキっ

  • wow great job

very good technique for playing bach..

  • I felt in love with Bach's music...I thought he was mechanical...well, we do not have any recording from that period, but today's interpretation could be really beautiful and not mechanical! I definetly LOVE it!

  • wow i played this for licentiate, brings back memories hehe

very nice prelude although i don't play bach anymore, not that there's anything wrong with bach

  • he hacks ;) i see him using piano godmode and keybot

  • It is so much easier for all of you to be critics than pianists, isn't it?

  • yes :-)

  • @aceofdatabase yes it is.

  • So great!

  • Bach owna !

  • excellent performance of this piece. although the logo is on the piano, for some reason this piano doesn't sound like a steinway and sons to me - it seems to be too meallow

  • He's amazing! Wow - such even but deep playing that truly captures the spirit of the piece!

Wonderful! He didn't win the Van Cliburn for nothing!

  • you can tell he is gould fan, at the van cliburn he wouldnt play with his own chair.

  • Yes but unlike Gould he keeps his yap shut while he's playing.

  • 6 un genio

  • it's a very serious musician: I heard him at the Van Cliburn and I agree that he's a true champion. What's very incredible is the naturalness and deepness of his sound, it's near to the sound of all the european great pianists. Thank You Hoachen.

  • Haochen!!! You are amazing. We support you forever.

  • OMG! He's such a nice player!!!

  • I watched him at the Cliburn and was impressed. I'm even more impressed that he plays Bach this well too.

  • Congratulations Haochen ... !!!

  • My friend, you are 'blind'. Good music or bad music are the same for you. A big explosion or a bird's song is the same for you. You can´t listen everything.

  • Fantastic playing and excellent tempos. Most play the fugue too fast, but this is great. I've been watching Hoachen in the Cliburn and I think he's the next Yundi Li or Lang Lang. In fact, I think he's better than they are.

  • I agree!

  • @BachScholar why compare

  • technique-wise perfect. maybe more dynamics? but it definitely sounds baroque to me. well done

  • Almost seems like he kind of strains his fingers, but still he performed very well =]

  • Very nicly done ! I just have some problems with hearin' dynamics. But excluding this is awesome !

  • genius!

  • Very nice indeed. An interesting interpretation however it lacks the crispness of GG's recordings. With him and despite the tempo, each note is crisply heard. As another said, this is Bach, not Chopin. Still, the work is very nice indeed.

  • Please, attencion: The Haochen Zhang's interpretation of bwv848 is a complete masterclass about the perfect interpretation of Bach's music!

Hear each phrase, the dynamic in 3:17, the voice of left hand in 2:31...that's Bach!! Hear the tema's taste in all fugue:fresh, brillant, emotional, like Bach's music need!

For give me, but Glenn Gould' interpretation and the others can't compare to H.Zhang.

Zhang played the best interpretation of BWV848. I can compare him to LANDOWSKA, no one else.

  • Glenn Gould, Sviatoslav Richter, Claudio Arrau and others in the clavicembalo or piano...Haochen Zhang is better in this piece, much better, much better!

God bless your hands, your mind, your soul, go bless your genious superb. This is a INCREDIBLE surprise in my life, thie interpretation is perfect, absolutly!

i´m a professional musician, and I know Bach all my life, are not only words

for give me for my english, I´m a Brasilian musician

    salut for everybody

  • I know all interpretations on youtube (20 OR MORE), and others, the most famous of the world too (Gould, Richter etc)

The Haochen Zhang's interpretation is THE BEST interpretation in the world, who knows BACH's CONTRAPUNTISTIC STYLE agree.

Haochen Zhang plays the fugue in the exactly tempo, the voices sins perfect, acentuation, cadenza, dynamic, brillant....he sings each note, pure, beautiful, like a "kantor"

  • Bravo, Haochen !!

  • awesome!!

  • It's Bach...not Chopin.

  • true. but dynamics and clean pedaling can make this piece sound so much more lively. true bach wrote this for the harpsichord, and it's fine to play on the harpsichord without much dynamics b/c theres not much you can do w/ dynamics on a harpsichord. But b/c it's the piano we need to use every bit of the ability that the piano can bring to a piece. And it's like my teacher says. Bach would've been thrilled to have composed for the pianoforte. just imagine what he could've done.

  • listen to Glenn Gould...

    you'll see, uh i mean hear :p

  • impressive!

    I loved it

  • He won 1st place on this!!! He will become a very good pianist!!! A+, Very nice!!! And he is also from Crutis

  • your technique is godly. I enjoyed your understanding of baroque style.

    beautifully played. please post more.

  • I dont care what any of these people say i thought it was very well played and very enjoyable.

  • Sounded great; quality video.

  • I must have poor taste, personally I don't find it very enjoyable at all. The playing is too light for me. I await vigor, health--some of that bouncing energy that the prelude yields and receive none. It is like I expect this pulsing and growing that at the very end is supposed to die in exhaustion but the whole performance is instead monotonous, yes, that's the word I was looking for.

  • Maybe the dynamics were slightly off, but the overall lightness is, for me, one of the great qualities of this piece. Bach has many pieces that I'm used to being played lightly, making their harmonic tensions all the more subtle and beautiful. The fugue did miss a bit of power and forward drive, though. But then Bach is the paragon of variation in approach, maybe it just depends on what you're used to.

  • a very good player...especially your fugue..

you brought out the voices very clearly!

    hats off!

  • I'm glad to see him again ! he grow up a lot.

very good Bach's touch, clean, clear and full of color.

  • Very nicely executed and interpreted. It's hard to be stylistic with articulation and to keep it musical, but he did it. The harmonic color changes were excellent.

  • How very well said :). You must be a good teacher!

  • I try my best!

  • @Daavid321 Good piano teacher only? He's one of two winners in Cliburn 2009!!!
