Back in the 60's there was a gas station up on the corner, it had 3 bathrooms, Men, Women, and a Colored out back near the trash. About the time this song came out, that station was torn down, and a micro mart self serv went up. It had one bathroom. "Uni-Sex"
My hometown is Uniondale, NY. It is out on Long Island. I grew up there back in the 50's and early 60's. It was wonderful, and I wouldn't trade it for all of the money in the world. My dad use to let me sit on his lap and "drive" our old 1952 dodge. I can still smell his cigarette. The town is not the same anymore, but it was a paradise back then for a child. I live in California now, but Uniondale will always be my hometown. Always.....
"My Hometown" was Monson, MA, which got hit hard by the tornado on Wednesday. Some of the house I grew up in, others on the street. This song makes me think of Monson in its better days. It's always in my heart. I live next door in Palmer, we lucked out. Other towns didn't. Thank you , Mr. Springsteen, for the heartfelt song. Jackilyn
For a song this old, the theme is exactly what continues to go on in our piss poor economy. The crap going on was just a snapshot into the future. It just keeps getting worse for the working class, the rich get richer and the rest of us try to get by!
I think everyone needs to listen to the lyrics of this song. He was singing a story of a past time that America lost. The home community no matter how difficult those days was between race of blacks and whites, Those days was far better then these days! It's sad. I can recall running 4 blocks down to local mini mart in my small town and being able to buy penny candy. When a phone call cost a dime. Police used common sense and didn't harass the average poor American kid. Those days are gone.
Bruce I have adored your music for over thirty years you are a complete legend. Ps we are about the same age, so if you ever get fed up of Patti, call me!!!!
It was my sons 6th birthday recently, We took a trip to a small town of 700 people where I grew up as a kid, I put him on my lap and let him steer the vehicle, I moved the rear view mirror so I could see His face and looked into heaven that day.....
im 30 now, as a kid i never really thought a whole bunch of bruce either way, bad or good. just heard this song the other day coming back home from philly and i guess it finally dawned on me how amazing he is. cant stop listening to this song now.
the funny thing is, Bruce came from a very historic town. He grew up in Freehold, NJ which is the site of one the bloodiest battles of the revolutionary war.
.....si ci mancano tutti quelli che non sonop più tornati ......e di chi è la responsablità ?????certo non di quelli morti nel loro sangue........grazie Bruce !!!
{My HOMETOWN} I tell my kids to take a good look around and this is their home town EVERY time, we visit our home town! It has had hurricanes and an oil spill but it is still HOME!!! OH what a year 1985 was!! Memories wrote on the walls of my heart forever!
Girl, take a good look around... This is the boss I met some time ago... and still singing every of his songs... day by day. So c'mon... you gotta feel it... you gotta dance it... you gotta sing it... you gotta rock it!!
It's dreams and hopes and illusions that this song captures in such vivid lyrical beauty! The reality cuts like a blade upon the skin....and we bleed to Bruce's beautiful voice!!!
In the monolouge before this song (of the Paris '85 show) he talks about how he lived in California and hadn't been back to Jersery in a long time. When he finally came back and drove around the town where he grew up all these emotions came back to him about his childhood and how he felt he ran away because he was scared of belonging to something. The lyrics reflect what might have been had he been a townie his whole life and he was proud of the townies who he had left behind.
Damn good song..beyond words. This is why he's the mother-fuckin' BOSS!!!!!!!!!!! 'Cause he sings about REAL SHIT and he don't give a fuck who you are and what you got to say. Just like when he told that evil sack of no good, piece of shit, waist of life Reagan to go fuck himself when he tried to use Springsteen's music. It's such a sad but beautiful song about how fucked up life can be & this song still is true now a days.

My Hometown was Woodbridge New Jersey. Summers were spent at Asbury Park and Wildwood.I went to my first concert at Convention Hall In Asbury Park in 1972. I have been living in Chicago for the past two years. I sure do miss Jersey.
I was at this show, he played a two-night stand in Paris. At one point during the concert he mentioned that he couldn't believe he was 35. He said he couldn't see anyone in the crowd who looked older than 35. He looked around and then said to a man, "You look like your older than 35!"
Bruce was 35 and now he's 57. I was 26 and now I'm 48. It seems like yesterday.

This is a song you just listened to and then sat in silence because nothing needed to be added.
