  • This is what urban White Baltimoreans sound like.

  • IM FROM BALTIMORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I TALK LIKE THIS! SCOREEE

  • I love Baltimore accents lol

  • I'm from baltimore and it sounds normal to me. My coloradan friend wanted to show me what I sound like! Fail!

  • this sounds completly normal to me....but that may be 'cause im from baltimore

  • Born in Baltimore raised in Buffalo. Ppl from Baltimore say "water" it sounds like "wooder".

  • He's redneck.

  • @xlittlegirl123 Uh, Im from baltimore and this sounds totally normal. So if this is a "redneck" accent, then I guess were all rednecks. Damn.

  • It sounds like a mix of a southern drawl with a slight NY lilt and a canadian "o" sound. It could be that there was an Irish Catholic presence in MARYland (it was founded as a refuge for Catholics who historically segregated themselves from protestants).

  • What about an Annapolis accent?

  • wow we may be in the same state but you sound so different lol

  • My family is from northern Virginia , D.C. , Oxon Hill Maryland and ALL talk exactly like this. They are older and i have noticed many younger people don't have this accent.

  • ugly accent

  • Why do you enunciate the letter O's so damn hard for? Drives me freakin nuts!

  • @tradewind08 O's!

  • @tradewind08 O's!

  • @J5MARLON :)

  • sounds normal to me also. but as well im from baltimore.we dont have the accent everyone else does! haha

  • This sounds just like my uncle.

  • I'm from Abingdon, Maryland and this sounds completely normal to me.

  • hahaha this is spot on!

  • I'm from Texas and he had a crazy accent. I've never heard any accent like this.

  • THat's right. Represent my home town! Up air!

  • Ya'll pronounced your "U's & "O"s differently than us from the south. I love it.

  • I'm from Maryland born and raised and can definitely notice the accent. I live right outside DC but all my friends and family speak like this. Sounds very similar to Philly/South Jersey...whenever I travel ppl think I'm from Jersey cause of the accent. This guy is dead on.

  • Funny thing is alot of folks here say they don't notice an accent, however to me this guy's accent has Baltimore written all over it, ironically comments on the other video "Andy's Baltimore accent" describe the accent as dead on, however I've visited Baltimore on numerous occasions and never heard anyone sound like the guy in the other video.

  • it sounds normal to me too, my husband is from Baltimore, so yeah... if you just lose the cussing it all sounds pretty much normalhehehe

  • I'm from Houston, TX and can definitely pinpoint the accent... especially his pronunciation of the letter "o" (for example, when he says "know", "ok", or "to").

  • Im from michigan and he sounds pretty normal to me.. sounds like mid west

  • @drewgilchrist

Sound normal to me and I'm from Missouri

  • ...did not even realize how much of an accent many of my friends/family have...

  • it's all about the OOOOOOO

  • @skinsfan1983

and "awn" for on and "foit" for fight

  • .........I live in Florida, and I cannot hear an accent.

  • ok...this sounds completely normal.. but im from baltimore, so i guess it makes sense

  • @ohso41 the I95 corridor is central Maryland. I'm talking about Southern Maryland; Charles, Calvert, and St.Mary's counties. If you've been there, you will know what I'm talking about. I grew up there, so I know. Central Maryland doesn't sound like Philly either. It has a little tiny twang to it, not too much though, but Southern, Western, and Eastern Maryland have a Southern Accent.

  • @jnels2007

Yes, I'm familiar with Charles, Calvert and St Mary's County. In fact I've had the local specialty stuffed ham.

I agree, with what you say about the accent in that particular area. The guy in this video, to me is quite typical of what I hear in the Baltimore/DC corridor.

  • @monumentfloyd the northern virginia area has the California accent, the Maryland side has the southern accent. I grew up outside of DC in Waldorf, and when I moved to Florida and talked to people from MD I could hear how southern the accent was. But NOVA talks really Southern Californian

  • @jnels2007

Gotta disagree, the only southern accents I here in Maryland are on the eastern shore (and the Appalachian accent) in the western Panhandle. As far as I'm concerned the entire Maryland I95 corridor doesn't sound much different than the Philadelphia accent.

  • Whoa I've never heard such a weird accent before.

  • @ohso41 That is so true...most philly people feel the same about NYC accents. However, I can tell the differences amidst the Burroughs, but still flat English is taking over =(

  • @ohso41 you can tell the differences in most ppl because they' say something like cawfee or something like that and you'll think they were from NYC and this sounds mostly like the NE Philly accent in South Philly is sounds like a Brooklyn Accent and Blacks sound like Jersey and the Broynx mixed

  • @JPOLOKCarson34

I'm from Long Island, I lived in Brooklyn, I've been to South Philly so many times I couldn't even count.

The South Philly accent to me sounds exactly like the rest of Philly, and most New Yorkers will feel the same way. The Brooklyn accent really doesn't exist any more if you're under the age of 70 - only in Hollywood.

  • but ima be real this accent is most like the ne philly and some areas in south but other areas sounds like the brooklyn

  • if you don't hear it, you have it

  • Bawlmer all the way, hon!

  • dis aint no bodymore accent i lived here my life and i aint heard nobody from here talk like dat

  • @jamikejor

It most certainly is. a Baltimore accent. Based on your "written" comment though, I can certainly understand why

  • i dont hear an accent

  • He sounds more like hes from philly

  • @JPOLOKCarson34

Sounds clearly like Baltimore to me, but then again I can barely tell the difference between the Baltimore and Philly accent- I know people from both places and the accent sounds virtually identical

  • wow i finally understand!! ppl kept on telling me bout this baltimore accent i got, i cant untill its pointed out. i hear ppl like this guy like everyday. hehe. but this guy likes to talk. a lot.

  • I think it could also be that he sounds "normal" to a lot you folks because he's within your dialect range, where there are probably a lot of people who sound the same or at least similar. I live in San Diego and to me his dialect couldn't be more prominent. And guess what, most people out here don't notice their "California" accent either - some will adamantly deny that there even IS a noticeable accent out here, but there is... its just more noticeable to people who don't hear it everyday.

  • If you look closely at the most prominent sounds running from Boston to Providence, Providence to NYC, NYC to South Jersey, then to Philly, Baltimore and so on down the biggest coastal cities, you'll find that they all form a dialect continuum that ever-so-casually takes us from northeastern dialects to Atlantic southern dialects one to a few tiny changes at a time from one major city to another, and those cities are the focal points for individual dialect clusters.

    Interesting stuff huh? :D

  • @Suolperos

There is a significant difference between DC Metro (which sounds very similar to this accent) and Fredericksburg VA 50 miles to the South which almost has no Mid Atlantic Qualities at all and definitely sounds more "Southern"

  • @ohso41 Does DC Metro sound markedly different from Baltimore to your ears?

As for Fredericksburg, does it sound at all similar to the Piedmont or Tidewater sounds, or is it more like mountain southern or coastal southern...?

Sorry, I'm curious and I clearly get really into this topic :P I wish I had the audio portion to Atlas of NA English, but it's over $700 >_x ...so that's definitely out..

  • @Suolperos

DC Metro (including Northern Virginia) sounds very similar to Baltimore Metro, the only difference is you will occasionally hear the the "ow" sound pronounced "old dominion style" similar to the Canadian pronunciation of "about" , Fredericksburg is probably more Piedmond or similar to what you might hear in Richmond.

  • @ohso4 Im from Northern Virginia. We sound NOTHING like Baltimore.

  • Comment removed

  • @Suolperos DC Metro is very different from Baltimore. I grew up in Northern Virginia and to me Baltimore sounds very Northeastern and they talk more like Yankees. The DC area has a very soft tidewater va accent, sorta like Senator John Warner. Its not as distinct as Richmond but its closer to that. I got made fun of in Baltimore for my "country" accent . I grew up about 40 miles west of DC in Loudoun County, VA.

  • @VASINGER

40 miles west of DC is Country- using a wide stretch of the imagination the DC metro area doesn't extend more than 25 or maybe 30 miles outside of DC tops- Rand McNally confirms this- Fredericksburg for example definitely has the Southern Accent- folks from DC metro- Alexandria falls church etc really don't sound much different than folks from MD

  • @ohso41 Not really. Northern Virginia is a Southern accent, not mid-atlantic. We sound nothing like Baltimore or Philadelphia. But today Northern Virginia has people from all over, so there's not really definable accent there anymore. It used to be like the rest of Virgina.

  • @monumentfloyd

Parts of Northern VA is- however I'm referring to the DC metro area- (which is within a 25 mile radius)

30 miles if you're stretching it- I have two local NO VA commercials on my favorites- and they sound completely different than the commercial I have from Fredericksburg and Richmond- and sound more in line with Maryland- check them out

  • @ohso41 Old natives of Alexandria sound almost identical to Richmonders. NOVA has a lot of northern transplants these days is probably what you're hearing. The natives of that area sounded like Virginians.

  • @VASINGER

But when I was on a high school band exchange trip back in the early 80's it took place in Arlington and I remember even back then thinking how everyone sounded like they were from Philadelphia and I know that Northern Virginia didn't have nearly as many transplants then as there are today.

  • @ohso41 Yes they did. Ever since the late 1960s. And nowhere near Philadelphia do they sound. Its an entirely different lilt in their voice. If you're familiar with talk show host Diane Reems. She has a classic DC area accent. Its a very soft tidewater accent and its not Northern, but not quite as Southern as Richmond or that accent. But its very similar.

  • Comment removed

  • @ohso41 Actually, people in the immediate DC area have accents more akin to Orange County, CA. Its kind of an odd thing. Many don't sound Southern anymore, and definitely not Philadelphian. They sound like they could be the cast of The OC. And they occassionally might say y'all. I know because I spent the better part of my life in Northern Virginia. I know how the region is. I didnt just visit one day on a band field trip. Look up actress Hilary Burton and Lauren Graham- both from the DC area.

  • @ohso41 It may be possible . However, they may not be necessarily representing the true speech of the region, since as well as know, NOVA is a very transient area with people from all over the USA. However, the natives of that region would sound more like Fredericksburg and Richmond. Also, not all Maryland have northern accents like Baltimore. Most sound more normal and non-Northern. Especially once you reach the DC area and points South. Southern Maryland is very Southern.

  • @Suolperos no

  • @Suolperos

Yeah. in baltimore, you can even hear maybe a little southernness coming.

  • According to dialect linguist Bill Labov, Baltimorese has historical basis in the Mid-Atlantic dialect group of American English, which also includes South Jersey and Philadelphia varieties. They form a relatively tight dialect continuum running in between those regions, with Philly as the hub. Baltimore in particular is on the cusp of what people consider "northern" and "southern" and has features that seem to be reminiscent of both.

Check out Atlas of North American English if you're curious.

  • Yeah this guy's 100% native Maryland, you can tell. His dialect is natural sounding. That's likely why a lot of folks here say that can't hear the accent - he doesn't make it intentionally prominent in his speech.

  • just sounds like the country peoples in my area : /

    go ravens <3

  • i been to la, denver, new york(brooklyn), atlanta, mississippi, and im from kansas city, missouri and this is by far the funniest accent. the way black people talk.. • im from baltimore and i don't hear it

  • accent? i'm from virginia and i don't hear it.

  • @KhopeX not many baltimore ppl in virginia

  • I have lived in Baltimore County my whole life and I do not hear an accent...he sounds like everyone else to me.

  • I'm from Baltimore and I certainly hear it. However, most people in Baltimore do not really have a strong regional dialect. Accents in general aren't as nearly as alive as they were through out the first half of the 20th century.

  • lol, he keeps rocking back and forth. but yeah sounds normal to me and im from baltimore. I go to georgia often and people dont seem to comment on my accent, most the time they dono im from out of state. but when i went to europe they caught onto the difference between a baltimore and atlanta accent right away. ALSO hon is lame and every time I hear it used it sounds forced, so i dont think people really say hon in baltimore. Some just try too or something.

  • Warning (particularly to women and children): this clip--however indicative of Balmerese--contains profanity. Careful! Chuck Thompson would never approve!

  • I'm from Baltimore!!!! LoL :)))

  • I don't hear it.

  • Lmao Im from baltimore and i really think its just somethin wrong wit him But there is a accent in baltimore tho and i kno i do have it and this....is not it i truly just think...he`s a retard

  • @MiiZZPhresh09

This is the accent I've always heard in Baltimore

  • Lol yeah im form b-more evry white person sounds like that

  • Wtf he doesn't have an accent. He might have an accent to someone who's from the south though.

  • His accent is pretty strong, but if you listen, just about every white person in the Baltimore area talks like this in one way or another--some more so, some less. Even Anapolitans betray their Maryland origin with the long "O" and "I" sounds.

  • im frome bmore and people talk like that

  • He sounds normal to me...then again, I'm from B-more...

  • i Think he sounds fine. then again im from pa , like 2 hours away

  • now this a REAL baltimore accent. i am so sick of all those people who make fun of the our accent. its not that noticable.... i think? ermmmmmm

  • im from baltimore.. this guy doesnt sounds like he was born in baltimore... maybe he was born in like dundalk or something. but he sounds country

  • This isn't just a Baltimore accent. My entire family is from Oxen Hill/Silver Springs Maryland and also D.C. , They all talk like this.

  • @V8Deuce Oxon Hill? Silver Spring?

  • I'd rather listen to nails dragged across a chalk board than the maryland accent.

  • I can hear his accent, its really good and im from Baltimore

  • Well im from Baltimore and i dont know if is just me but when i talk i usually dont pronounce D's in middle of words or g's at the end, like speeding becomes spee-in and i say Baltimore like Baldimore. But our accents arent so strong were you can clearly hear a skiped word thats why some people who try to immitate it sound dumb or mostly really country.

  • Baltimorian And PA accent is Practically the same. I study American Accents fo rfun and I travel ALOT. This is my Favorite Accent. Every Other accent I heard expected to Hear. But the baltimorian accent is so different. Like a Southerner and A Boston Guy had sex and bamn.

  • @ellohotto

    I like your analogy.

  • @ellohotto thats cool that you do that for fun. im from michigan and i hear a lot of other accents from north eastern countries sometimes, and we all like to really get into our stories. especially this guy. lol

  • This Shit Is so Funny, You have it right up air,

  • "Time" sounds like "Tom".

    "Real" sounds like "Rail"

    "Open" sounds like "Ayy-open".

    "To" sounds like "Tayy-ooh"

  • That's a funny story. Sounds like one of my buddies.

  • Ughhh just a horrid awful accent.

Haha, glad I didn't pick it up.

  • i love the baltimore accent! i don't live there anymore and i miss it so much!!!!

  • I think I can detect a cockney twang in that accent?

Maybe that was from the English settlers

  • @Guard0985

Yep, there's a Cockney twang in a lot of places near the Chesapeake. You should hear the Tangier Island accent. It's incredible. Plus the only video on here of it kind of explains the origins of these wild accents.

  • now thats the Baltimore accent...im tired of all these people faking it and murdering the damn thing...thats the accent..i live in bmore

  • Studio, I'm, No, guys, down, open, annoy; those are the words where you can hear it.

In the summer, do you ever hear,

    "Go downy ocean 'hon!"

  • from bmore an im n the 410 i dont hear nothin he sound more southern than n e thing else shits wack

  • This is awesome. Really similar to a south Philly/Chester/Bucks county accent, like Ryan Dunn and Bam Margera have.

  • If you live in another area and you grew up in Baltimore, you can easily recognize it. I dunno, but it does seem similar to a lot of other north atlantic accents.

  • wat the hell is he talkin bout im from baltimore and idk wat the hell he is doin

  • I live in Baltimore and i dont here it

  • Notice how he says "up air" instead of up THERE

  • He' aint got no beat dude!

  • Dc-B-more is northern. But B-more has a slight southern taste to it

  • you def. got that backwards

  • I live in York Pa. and I don't hear any accent at all!

  • I come from York PA, and am very used to this accent. I've lived in London for the past 20 years, and it is almost identical to a pure Essex accent. Trust me, without thinking about it, I find myself slipping into an Essex accent ALOT.

  • That's probably where alot of people from this area originated.

  • is that Essex east of London or Essex east of Baltimore

  • balmer

  • Who the hell still goes by the Mason Dixon line? Jesus Christ, step into 2009 where the northeastern corridor and bos wash megapolis which includes Maryland is popular

  • EXACTLY

  • baltimore accents are funny, but best of all are the black population that live in west baltimore. ALL of there spoken words are cut off in the beginning and end of a word. They just murder the English language. LMAO.

  • I moved from Philly to NOVA, and felt so at HOME (or should I say, "houme") in Baltimore because our accents are pretty similar. Baltimore just hasï»
