One thing that was great about this is that even though Buckley was a liberal, he's intelligent enough to follow Sowell's sorting logic and not throwing up defense shields at the implications.
I would think that women, being over-represented on the left, would have less opportunity in a crowded democrat field where minorities of all stripes are over-represented and compete for available political seats. Never mind that on the voting side, those minorities that vote democrat, often have their own ideas about the proper role of women in society.
On the senate issue, I imagine it's just like how it is in Canada: it's the political parties themselves that discriminate against women. Over here, when there is a female candidate, she is just slightly more likely to get voted in, but getting onto the ballot in the first place is the hard part because the POLITICIANS are the most sexist. Yeah, there's discrimination (being a woman of colour, I know) , but that doesn't mean you shouldn't even try to succeed.
@beigelycheenut - Canada has a "strong party" system and it's a decidedly Leftist country. Strong party systems become sounding boards from group think and wise elites. Read the book "What's Left?" and you'll find the Labor Party and Unions in the UK is an Ultra-Leftist, Marxist party which is wholly misogynistic.Compare this to the "evil right-wingers" in America where the "weak party" system allows for individuals to run against the party itself, as we're seeing in the Republican Primary now.
@thomaserossi Oh for sure. Like on the three major political party, it's "Vote liberal corporatist, super socialist, or liberals that want to take rights away with respect to your personal life." On the bright side, MLA's do a tad more for their area, so even though on a federal level I vote conservative because the other parties screw the West in favour of Quebec and Ontario, I hate my formerly Conservative MLA. I voted Green. At least they're not as bad as the NDP!
@NHindividualist This saddens me. It's as though TS discounted Ron Paul to the point that he wasn't there. I can understand wanting Newt over Mitt; a bought-and-paid-for conservative over a moderate liberal any day. But I don't understand standing on principle. TS doesn't agree with Newt on many points but does agree with Ron Paul on many points.
Foreign Policy are where RP and TS differ quite a bit. Particularly in how to handle enemies or not how to handle enemies. Domestically, their views are virtually perfectly aligned. That's y a lot of Paul supporters like Sowell but get real pissed when he agrees more with repubs in foreign policy. Not completely, but a lot. Me, I'm probly closer to Sowell's thinking than Pauls. I guess u could say Sowell is best described as libertarian domestically & republican in foreign policy
Just because he says Gingrich is the least of the other evils doesn't mean he's side by side with Gingrich. He has way more in common with Paul. But because foreign policy and matter of life and death and what not is such an issue, I guess Sowell just can't bring himself to get behind Paul completely. I'm sure he holds his nose as he sort of leans towards Gingrich for this years election.
I don't think there's a video. He rarely makes TV appearances, sadly. He's got some columns on the election and whats going on right now though. You probly know about townhall.com, correct? Just go there.
@OnlyTheWeakNeedHelp said [[is there a video that explains thomas sowells view on this election, or on ron Paul?]]
He has a LOT of books, all of them very well written. (Well, the ones I've read were excellent). But as far as your question, you would be better off googling for it or searching in youtube.
This question of 1 representative in gov't that's a woman when there is 50% women population: Why is it alright to force a woman to vote for a woman? Can't a woman/man/blaccl/whte/gay/straight/etc vote for whoever they feel represents them best?
And if we use this proportionality argument for everything, why would the President of the US be anything other than "mixed" ethnicity?
"I'm sorry, sir, you are 17% black but must be 15% black and 51% woman or you can't run for President".
That's a good case to be brought up. This president is a bi-racial president. A regular full white mother. And African dad. He has no ties to the typical black american. And yet, most black americans are under the silly stupid assumption that he is one of their own. He isn't.
This is why blacks and other minority groups make so little income compared to whites. They get a substandard education, are told they are special and therefore they are entitled "anti discriminatory laws," which in turn makes anything they learn or do worthless in the eyes of an employer compared to whites in general. That's the greatest tragedy, that certain races are discriminated against through well meaning policies.
As a Hispanic, I'm tired, so got dam tired of being asked what is my race on applications. I'm grateful my father told me simplistically(he had little education) to never rely on ethnicity or anything else other than hard work to be the metric people judge me by. I'm one of those "Hispanics" that is earning a Ph.D in physics/chemistry that Sowell mentions. I wish liberals would stop reminding me that I'm Hispanic. Last time I checked, I was just a hard working American without the hyphen.
@1czelaya I'm Middle Eastern, I'm considered White by the government and have no special treatment for my Ethnicity. People know I'm not "white" in the sense of the word (as a matter of fact Hispanic is the usual mistaken identity for me). Trust me, I know exactly how you feel especially about Liberals trying to remind me of my ethnicity. I'm very proud and impressed by you, much respect.
I have had women tell me they would never vote for a woman. Others would vote for any woman given the opportunity. A bias on both sides, ignoring qualifications.
If lack of representation of a particular group of people in a particular establishment is considered evidence of discrimination, then we are all victims and perpetrators of discrimination. That is, until every school, company, organization, neighborhood, city, website, et al. is precisely aligned with the demographic break down of the country.
Too bad the clone writing in the name of Thomas Sowell doesnt resemble anything like the Thomas in this video. The idiot writing in my newspaper colum is a complete establishment republican who thinks theres nothing wrong with the republican party that cannot be fixed with a little tinkering
How is it that we can have educated people of such great common sense in this world, and we have so few that have education or common sense in government.
@furyofbongos As I watch the GOP debates and the state of the union, I get disgusted by the petty bickering. they keep trying to buy my vote with my own money. I believe in Capitalism and the rule of law. these seem to be lost concepts to Congress, the president, and those running for president.
