When I got my EVO it was with my dad's upgrade so he had it until the rebate came in. And he does not know anything about phones. Out of the box, yes he had to charge it 3 times a day. He gave it to me for 40 minutes, I looked online, and played with the settings a bit. 2 days of very normal use for me easily, and I love messing around on it.

Sorry everyone-- but I agree with Chris completely. I had an old iPhone 3G and got sick of paying high AT&T prices. Yesterday I bought the HTC Evo, and my experience has been pretty much the same as what Chris has said. I actually just returned it. Other than Sprint having less expensive plans, there was no advantage to the Evo. The Evo layout is not very user friendly, it got bad reception, the battery life is very short, the internet crashes a lot, the construction feels cheap.
I use my EVO pretty regularly, and i can get a day and a half out of it, like ANY device, I close apps and things after im done using it, which is something the iphone does whether you want it to or not!! when you say your "not using the phone", but you have twitter running and 4g and blue tooth, and who knows what else. one thing i will tell you is that I enjoy talking to someone while texting or looking up something on the internet. let me know when you can do that on your iphone 3g

His test was unfair because it does not supply any evidence the device completed a full charge cycle, the devices were not put through the same test under the same circumstances.

He's right had it for a week. Horrible. Happily returned it. The worst battery life I ever seen. The os does not work well with the hardware. Now I see why apple makes there own stuff. @lockergnome Turning off the bluetooth is smart if your not using bluetooth. The auto sync that constantly runs should also be off & if your not using wifi don't let scan 4 wifi constantly. My evo gets 8-10hrs on 1 charge. I use bluetooth just not 24 7. I use wifi quite a bit but I turn it off when I'm not using it. Its no more than 1 step to turn these on & off w/out going n2 the settings. When you leave background sync on u'll be refreshing 15 to 20 apps in the background continuously.

I have the Sprint htc EVO. Your video does not lie, you are right on point. The EVO is a power hungry device. I solved this by purchasing 4 extra batteries and 2 external chargers. From the looks of it I will need to buy 4 more batteries. If I really want to use the phone none stop I will have to change batteries every 2-3 hours. Batteries were cheap $5 each on ebay well worth it though. Overall I saved money as my plan $79 unlimited everything a month on Sprint vs $120+ a month on AT&T iphone

There is no Empirical evidence here as you suggest as you could have very easily rigged this video by putting in your charge adapter for a few minutes and then removed it 4 hrs ago and wallah, short battery life. Your tone also suggests that you are less than honest and are simply firing back at comments that don't agree with yours. I get 15 hrs or better with mine and I don't turn everything off nor do I turn everything on, just the stuff I constantly use and I use mine frequently.

60% of the use on the Evo was you talking on the phone, and bluetooth being active and searching for another headset. You also have 4G running, which Android has said WILL drain your battery. Don't turn it on if you don't need it.

i like both of these phones, and i think that the htc looks great! and i love the widgets and the gui and all that, but i think why would they make the phone capable of 4g if it just destroys your battery life, and sure you can turn it off, but then what about when the networks become 4g, sorta ruins the point of having it.
He has the 4g radio turned on. It is widely know that the 4g radio should be turned off unless you're actually losing it. It really seems to me that this guy is unwilling to really get into using the Evo and setting it up. I get good battery life(not great however) out of my Evo by using a little common sense. I keep my 4g radio off unless i need it...and I manually sync my data most of the time.

People should really stop the comparison between these 2 phones. I believe it really comes down to personal preference. They are both awesome phones and have their pro's and con's. After using iPhone for 2 years I'm going to switch to the HTC and try Android. I love the iPhone but I want to try something different. We'll see what's out when my contract is up and try something else. For the record your review of the HTC was obviously biased but hey there are plenty of other reviews on YouTube.
@jonvssocrates There is a 3500 mAh battery coming out for the Evo. You do have to change the back but dont give up on it just yet! Im sure more updates to improve battery life will become available with the Froyo 2.2 update as well.

I have an htc hd2, and it does not have the best battery life, but I can leave it uncharing over night, and still only lose a few percent of my battery.
Maybe you just have a bad battery? Maybe the 4G drains it that badly, I don't know. But I don't think that 5 hours standby is right.
I noticed that you had 4g enabled, bluetooth enabled and GPS enabled. You did not physically use the phone, the device is constantly searching for signals when it is idle, thus draining the battery. This is a poor review of battery life.

He's right had it for a week. Horrible. Happily returned it. The worst battery life I ever seen. The os does not work well with the hardware. Now I see why apple makes there own stuff. Took it off the charger at 8am by 1pm it was at 28%. It was slow. The response was a nightmare. Froze up 10 times in the week I had it. The os needs alot of work Not sure what people see in the android os I see alot of people are leaving these android phone now that the iphone is on big red I dont blame them

@lockergnome Turning off the bluetooth is smart if your not using bluetooth. The auto sync that constantly runs should also be off & if your not using wifi don't let scan 4 wifi constantly. My evo gets 8-10hrs on 1 charge. I use bluetooth just not 24 7. I use wifi quite a bit but I turn it off when I'm not using it. Its no more than 1 step to turn these on & off w/out going n2 the settings. When you leave background sync on u'll be refreshing 15 to 20 apps in the background continuously.

this is so true my buddy had a evo and he had to charge it every 4 1/2 to 5 hours. I would say its because of the shitty google os. But what do I know. He with others im sure have returned it. Because of this and other reasons that include the screen coming off the phone and a choppy os. IMO google android os was rushed out the door and sucks.

I have the Sprint htc EVO. Your video does not lie, you are right on point. The EVO is a power hungry device. I solved this by purchasing 4 extra batteries and 2 external chargers. From the looks of it I will need to buy 4 more batteries. If I really want to use the phone none stop I will have to change batteries every 2-3 hours. Batteries were cheap $5 each on ebay well worth it though. Overall I saved money as my plan $79 unlimited everything a month on Sprint vs $120+ a month on AT&T iphone

There is no Empirical evidence here as you suggest as you could have very easily rigged this video by putting in your charge adapter for a few minutes and then removed it 4 hrs ago and wallah, short battery life. Your tone also suggests that you are less than honest and are simply firing back at comments that don't agree with yours. I get 15 hrs or better with mine and I don't turn everything off nor do I turn everything on, just the stuff I constantly use and I use mine frequently.

You guys can hate on this video, but a week ago I was in love with the Evo 4G, and than I got an oppritunity to switch over and get an iPhone4. Well the fact is these phones are very similar, other than the Sense UI, and IOS4. I like the Evo but what is the point of having so many features if you have to turn them of, because you want to save battery life. I just dont understand that.

60% of the use on the Evo was you talking on the phone, and bluetooth being active and searching for another headset. You also have 4G running, which Android has said WILL drain your battery. Don't turn it on if you don't need it.

ya no shit LOL Ya i had a evo for a week and returned it worst phone ive had. This is was my first android phone horrible. I didn't like the ui the software is slow and choppy. And yes the battery ahh the battery i had the phone for a WEEK and charged it twice a day. Just got the iphone 4 two weeks ago. Love it and no i don't have reception problems or gripping problems. And where i live at&t is awesome. thx apple for my iphone 4, Now I see why so many people love them.

lol i have a evo 4g myself and mine lasts for about 24-48 hours depending on my usage.
1) your 4g is on. Its looking for that 4g wimax signal the whole time.
2) bluetooth doesnt use much battery unless its being used or being used by a program. turn it off.
3) yes task killers get bad reps for closing your apps but it really does help
4) 4g. 720p recording. hdmi out. 8mp camera. 4.3" screen > iphone3g & iphone4

He has the 4g radio turned on. It is widely know that the 4g radio should be turned off unless you're actually losing it. It really seems to me that this guy is unwilling to really get into using the Evo and setting it up. I get good battery life(not great however) out of my Evo by using a little common sense. I keep my 4g radio off unless i need it...and I manually sync my data most of the time.
This dosent truly seem "empirical" to me. We dont know the settings of both phones in the vid

People should really stop the comparison between these 2 phones. I believe it really comes down to personal preference. They are both awesome phones and have their pro's and con's. After using iPhone for 2 years I'm going to switch to the HTC and try Android. I love the iPhone but I want to try something different. We'll see what's out when my contract is up and try something else. For the record your review of the HTC was obviously biased but hey there are plenty of other reviews on YouTube.

Coming from a blackberry that got 48+ hours, this POS gets not even 8 hours.
I've upgraded the battery to 1700, I've killed tasks, I've even tried not using it. UGGG!!! It's so cool, but I'm returning it I think.

I respect your opinion, but I cannot believe that the designers of the Evo intended it to only have a 5 hour battery life in standby.
I have an htc hd2, and it does not have the best battery life, but I can leave it uncharing over night, and still only lose a few percent of my battery.
Maybe you just have a bad battery? Maybe the 4G drains it that badly, I don't know. But I don't think that 5 hours standby is right.

I noticed that you had 4g enabled, bluetooth enabled and GPS enabled. You did not physically use the phone, the device is constantly searching for signals when it is idle, thus draining the battery. This is a poor review of battery life.
