20 years later on linux and red hat, suse, ubuntu, are still making the same mistakes, it frustrates me. Your supposed to learn from your mistakes but these distros just seem to push it under the carpet and ignore it. I seriously dont think they will ever get it, in fact there going to destroy there distro unless they deal with the issue. Slackware and Gentoo solved the problem but its not user friendly.
well its 2012, revisiting this vid and ubuntu is failing. In fact the ubuntu package team either dont know what there doing or are deliberately causing ubuntu to fail. Weather you like it or not you can not make a generic pre-compiled kernel to run on all hardware out the box unless you use the auto-probing module loader which ubuntu has not done any considerable work on. Little work on wine, little work on webcam drivers and software, not even any work done on instant messengers adv features
When linux runs professional apps natively and stable like photoshop cubase 3dstudio max etc etc...then it ll be a serious player.Wine is more unstable from the real windows and runs pretty much whatever it feels like.So for real tasks with serious apps is useless. It offers amazing things for free but if those amazing things wont help you get the job done then they are useless...
@Dreamdancer11 ask that to the fuckers that own that software (cubase, 3dstudio, and all that shit) to port that to Linux. It's their responsability to make them "native".
@GenoSkill Of course its not linux fault. But the fact remains that its not happening so i as a user who wants to get work done wont favor linux over another os..and thats the cold hard truth.Whats the point of having a tool that doesnt do the job you want.Even if its free its useless.Plus the amount of time dedicated to set it up..isnt free. Its certainly fine for some things but not all.Linux users look the other way when something isnt working and their excuse always is that is free.....
@Dreamdancer11 Indeed. Even if there are some linux alternatives, those alternatives don't worth the migration. for example in the case of video editors.
@genomastergenomaster I agree with you totally. kedenlive, webcam over messengers do not work well they ish work but they dont work work. The linux desktop fully lacks advanced functionality. The kernel and terminal are perfect but the desktop usefulnesses especially in video editing weather for youtube vids or anything like that just does not work work. You still need to be a developer to get these adv features working on the linux desktop and that dont happen on pre-compiled ubuntu clearly
Pre-Compiled binary packages in linux has always been unstable or have something unstable about them. When they are compiled native the package seems to run more stable. Nvidia Binary seem to work better than most yet only part of there driver is pre-compiled which allows for install time compiling maybe that is something to consider
This is an awesome vid but ubuntu Does not work. Seriously there is not enough wine development, the package management in ubuntu does not work well at all. Each manufacturer dell, HP etc needs to pull there finger out of there ass if they want to get paid seriously. Open Source allows manufacturers to build there platform as the best most powerful solution so why does Dell, HP etc think everyone else will do it for them no they need to start software developing and contributing
Oh yeah and Ubuntu is crap. I can't believe anyone would install it. I mean it's broken. Seriously. I'm not a die hard linux fan but Ubuntu doesn't try and solve problems in the system. They just try and patch things. So they will apply patch over a patch over a patch till it works. Instead they should be trying to understand why the bug happens and just fix it. Then they have this stupid release cycle which pushes people to "just patch" instead of fix code.
who thinks all schools should be running ubuntu? why waste our tax dollars on an licencing an OS that makes bill gates richer when we could use a free ones? thumbs up if you agree
@4ckedhero Because if you teach students to use Linux, when they graduate and go in a company that uses Windows (which is 99.99% of companies) they are stuck. Most schools run windows so that they can teach MS Office. Stop worshiping Linux. It's not cool anymore. I use it, I like it, I prefer it but after all it's just a tool to get something done and often I'm less efficient in linux than in Windows.
@kotapaka anyone who can use/understand linux or open office can easily transfer to windows/microsoft office. its no hassle. and i dont worship linux. i use windows as well. i just dont see the reason tax money should be wasted on licencing windows in schools.
@4ckedhero Well maybe not ALL schools, but most for sure. One example of a school that it is not viable for is any arts school where they need the full Photoshop. I am not saying gimp is bad, just that Photoshop is the industry standard.
@4ckedhero Any grade schools and high schools should be using this, but where there is an industry standard software that is designed to run on Windows............ That is the hard reality, I have my system set up for dual boot, Ubuntu/Windows, simply for this reason. I suspect that a lot of education sys admins out there find it easier to just go with windows for everything, one there is one of those bureaucratic standards imposed requiring windows for some reason........

@panzers20 ubuntu[dot]com. Or search on wikipedia for other distro's that might suit you. I'm a windows user but i've used the latest version of ubuntu and it's quite nice. But 1st i'm gonna get rid of win xp off my netbook and than i'm gonna turn "the toy" into a hackintosh (for testing purposes).

Also, even if people knew linux is better, they don't care. Windows already does that they want it to do or think it does what they want it to do. That's why it will never catch on....because their fav device compatible only with windows or OSX, will take hours and learning to make with work with linux. Example: iphone. Again, i'm talking about most of the people in the world, not linux fans.
I think the linux crowd is growing, linux does what the average user neesds, the only reason for me using windows are maybe 2 apps and for gaming. every thing else I do is on linux. the best thing about it is so far it just works, I have not had the need to look for drivers. and it has come along way and doesn't seem to stop anytime soon.
I downloaded ubuntu the other day, and i have to say that I am NOT disappointed. I see no reason to go back to Windows as I'm not playing video games or use Windows specific apps. Your right, the average person is far better off with linux. I've only had one driver issue and linux detected the need and automatically downloaded and installed it.
I love linux but there is a problem and it doesn't lie in whether linux is better than windows or not. We know linux is better because it's far more stable OS than windows and it's far smarter than windows because windows is stupid. But the problem is that most of the world knows windows and programs/apps associated with it. Most can't be bothered to spend hours and hours learning code and linux commands or a new OS in their new lives. It's a huge learning curve. (continued)
I agree, unfortunately many wireless cards in particular are impossible to install or have only partial support thanks to lack of support for linux by hardware manufacturers.
Nice lecture, Mr. Shuttleworth. Ubuntu is in fact my distro of choice. It's like Debian's modern and wreckless son. Debian is in my opinion far too conservative and rigid. As a Java programmer i found Ubuntu to be the best platform to use with application servers like JBoss and Glassfish, different IDEs (like Eclipse) and various other tools. Fedora is okay, but it has some major quirks and flaws. Also. my experience is that Windows just isn't up for the task.
there is too much desinformation coming from windows and mac users... im using ubuntu for a month and right now i can do all needed tasks for my self. Ubuntu will be common in the future, its easy to use, linux communities are friendly and it works better than windows... windows is good only for the games thats it...
Google tech talks... I have photoshop CS3 and MS office 2007 on my Windows XP computer. Do you know the perfect alternative for these programs. That's holding me for running my computer on linux. Please tell me.
there is short list for common programs: open office for ms office gimp for photoshop qcad for autocad blender for 3d max wammu for nokia pc suite ktorrent for utorrent audacious for old winamp (2.x) rythmbox for new winamp vlc - vlc brasaero - nero

if i were you i love using linux and say to warrock: fuck you! im using a windows XP and i wanna new OS im tihnking about to dual boot windows and linux in 1 harddrive linux is a werry stable OS but windows? i dont think linux haves some sort of BSOD (bluescreen of death) or some shit like that
I like linux and run it on an older computer but for business I use, and like, windows. Too often people break into two or three camps...it's not a war folks...linux, windows, and mac all have their place in the computing world. I'm not a mac fan, customizing is limited, but I like both ubuntu and windows.
linux. Its generally agreed. Some people will say its too technical, which was true years ago. Ubuntu linux is even easier then windows. The other negative is the lack of games. However, about half of all windows programs (including games) can play in Wine and no matter who you are, the structure of linux is agreed on to be better no matter what.
Yes you can, if you just want to try it on your pc i would recommend wubi (Windows UBuntu Installer) it installs ubuntu inside windows you dont need to get into partitioning and you can delete it as a normal program.
hi, maybe someone could answer me why ubuntu is used more than kubuntu when kubuntu has such a more friendly feel moving from windows?, I tried ubuntu and I much prefer the "classic" feel of kubuntu . . all replys to this comment really appreciated thank you in advanced.
not sure why this is marked as spam but o well. but anyways, ubuntu came out first and its what everybody became familiar with. kde is also still under much development and honestly i find gnome much more like windows, but thats always arguable. also kde isn't classic, it isn't the newest but its not the oldest either
i personl think its a hell of a lot harder to add stuff or install stuff to kubuntu but i do like the taksbar i wish gnome had that but it is also a default sooo
Haha, if you delete the Ubuntu Partition while on Vista then GRUB is still there, trust me, I got screwed from it. Luckily I figured it out.
If you delete the Ubuntu Partition and GRUB won't let you start up, then put in your Windows Vista CD and type the following into the command prompt when you can...
he is saying , use a live CD find out if your wireless card is supported if it is, then go ahead and install, personally I am running Ubuntu with Vmachine " Virtual machine" it runs the .iso (disk image) and installs in the specific size you want IN the program, it's quite nifty,
If u delete the Linux partitions the boot manager Grub will disappear. Windows will run some disk repair tasks and that's it. Just install windows first and than linux. U can reuse the / partition to install the new Ubuntu version... make a /home for keeping personal info that would stay untouched when reinstalling...U should learn shell programming that will help u use linux for real...or at least some basic commands.. clicking it's not the way
actually not 100% right...a lot of the guys at my university from non-CS background use their *unix OS seamlessly without knowing a lot of shell programming... i understand you need to know like real basics but that's about it unless you need to do some extensive stuff with your *unix machine
what would u do if u want to replace the blank spaces in file names with _ ? I mean how long it would take u to do that manually, for every file on your disk... it should take u about 10 sec to write the command, than the computer would do the rest...yeah you could make a program to do that..but you would miss all the Unix essence. Of course you can use Linux ignoring that there is a Shell "thins" over there but what would u do when there is no program/button to do the job u want?
see...you are again partially right... you call this behavior as being part of using linux for real... see don't get me wrong.. i am a CS nerd who is deep into shell programming and rarely use the GUI myself... the thing is.. beginners sometimes get scared off by this talk (learning shell programming for using *unix).. and we shouldn't be preaching shell programming at least here learning shell programming is good.. but you can get the work done without knowing it.. my Prof does :P
From a beginner point of view that should be "totally" true; but when it comes to doing "some more",and there's no button, or you're in a hurry and have no time for having fun with the mouse, then they recall a scary you_tube post where people were talking about shell programming and commands and stuff like that :D;If anyone using Linux gets anything but curious when hearing "shell programming" they would actually get sacked in no time from a company that asks u to "know unix".w u t best of luck
the thing is.. we both are seemingly alluding at the same thing but from different angles :P
a new comer DOES not need to know the details about shell programming to start using *unix, it's the same for windows as well..you ideally should know about stuff before delving into the OS, and it is the same for any other OS.. i agree that windows may provide just a bit more through the GUI than what *unix does..
but i again repeat..newbies don't need to know shell programming to start using *unix
:D OK, I don't want to extend this any more, it's just that when someone says that he/she's using Unix (which actually doesn't exist), u know what I mean, well they are actually using the console for making their life easier, otherwise they are just using a window system not Unix. That is why people like it so much, u can do almost anything using shell programming and Ansi C :D (please don't start :D)... if u really are into Unix I invite you to use Plan9...for real...good luck !!! :-)
that's a good tought! i installed ubuntu on my laptop and it didn't accept my card, so now i'm stuck with ubuntu on my laptop and i updated all drivers, i installed multiple files, nothing works, it's shit
i loved ubunto but can someone tell me how can i put music in my ipod. ubunto lacks the capability of doing that. seriuosly if anyone know please write me a message
Just because a person doesn't know how to use a device with Ubuntu, doesn't mean it lacks the ability to use a particular device. See UbuntuForums website and ask your questions there. This is a video site, where people comment on videos, generally if you want tech support you should find somewhere else better suited for such a thing.
right now i am running ubuntu 8.07 i think hardy heron, anyways, i am switching b/w this, opensuse 11 and mandriva(2008.1 spring) mandriva works best out of the box, and looks the best, ubuntu is "easy" to use (exept when trying to do tings with my new zen), and opensuse 11 is very vesrsitile, and is the oly distro i have gotten to run games. i am a linux noob, and need help with hardware issues, could someone plz respond to this comment on which distro you think is best? : )
As I recommended to another person, when you need help with Ubuntu, try UbuntuForums website, not a site with comments on videos for tech support. Ask UbuntuForums people about your zen. Ubuntu is capable of running games just like suse, mandriva and others. When it comes down to what distro is best, that depends on the individual. Some will tell you their honest opinion, others are fanboys and will hype their favorite distro, don't trust opinions, try several and use what YOU like
I'm a Linux user myself. I have tried 3 different distros. Fedora, Kubuntu and Ubuntu. I must say that out of those three, Ubuntu has deffinately come out on top. I have never had a single problem with it. It is almost flawless. I have countlessly switched between windows and Linux for the main reason that with Linux i missed the games. However, I'm not settled with Ubuntu and am willing to sacrifice good games for security and stability which Ubuntu Linux provides.
well considering there are next to no known viruses for Linux, it's hardly as unsafe as windows, which can get infected in as little as 30 seconds or 40 minutes max
thanks for the advice, but i've tried running world of warcraft through wine, and it turns out a little buggy. I'm guessing it requires more hardware to run through wine.
You're welcome. I've not tried WoW via Wine, but you might want to check with the UbuntuForums people in the Wine forum there. Everyone I've chatted with who has played WoW through Wine has had no problems, but everyone's experiences differ. Are you using the latest version of Wine and Ubuntu? Have you read the Wine Application Database for WoW? The UbuntuForums Wine threads related to WoW? Those are two places to start. Cedega may also be an option if it supports WoW.
Ubuntu is one of my favorite Linux distributions. Although it does have its rough edges, I really like Ubuntu and the way the community is structured. I appreciate that Canonical is acutally helping the Free and Open Source software community by helping fix bugs with upstream, even though I think some other people do it to... Ubuntu takes what I like of Debian and makes it simple and easy to use with an extremely strong community. That's why I really like Ubuntu.

AND????? you can't play all games online for Linux? GAH! -.-
Eragon86micky 2 years ago
I think the linux crowd is growing, linux does what the average user neesds, the only reason for me using windows are maybe 2 apps and for gaming. every thing else I do is on linux. the best thing about it is so far it just works, I have not had the need to look for drivers. and it has come along way and doesn't seem to stop anytime soon.
deketeme 2 years ago 2
I downloaded ubuntu the other day, and i have to say that I am NOT disappointed. I see no reason to go back to Windows as I'm not playing video games or use Windows specific apps. Your right, the average person is far better off with linux. I've only had one driver issue and linux detected the need and automatically downloaded and installed it.
Juilkca 2 years ago 4
I love linux but there is a problem and it doesn't lie in whether linux is better than windows or not. We know linux is better because it's far more stable OS than windows and it's far smarter than windows because windows is stupid. But the problem is that most of the world knows windows and programs/apps associated with it. Most can't be bothered to spend hours and hours learning code and linux commands or a new OS in their new lives. It's a huge learning curve. (continued)

Google tech talks... I have photoshop CS3 and MS office 2007 on my Windows XP computer. Do you know the perfect alternative for these programs. That's holding me for running my computer on linux. Please tell me.
sjoerdv92 2 years ago
Well, for office they use Open office, it's basically the same.
For photoshop, maybe WINE can run the real thing? If not, there are alternitives, but nothing can compare. IE: GIMP.
Quick google reveals that Photoshop can be used via WINE

Well Gimp is usable but not exactly the same as photoshop, Openoffice 3 is a direct competitor to MS office

linux. Its generally agreed. Some people will say its too technical, which was true years ago. Ubuntu linux is even easier then windows. The other negative is the lack of games. However, about half of all windows programs (including games) can play in Wine and no matter who you are, the structure of linux is agreed on to be better no matter what.

not sure why this is marked as spam but o well. but anyways, ubuntu came out first and its what everybody became familiar with. kde is also still under much development and honestly i find gnome much more like windows, but thats always arguable. also kde isn't classic, it isn't the newest but its not the oldest either

Haha, if you delete the Ubuntu Partition while on Vista then GRUB is still there, trust me, I got screwed from it. Luckily I figured it out.
If you delete the Ubuntu Partition and GRUB won't let you start up, then put in your Windows Vista CD and type the following into the command prompt when you can...
bootrec.exe_/fixmbr
ThaggleS 3 years ago
That's because you deleted the boot directory. It's not that GRUB wouldn't let you start up, it's that you removed essential parts of the bootloader.

he is saying , use a live CD find out if your wireless card is supported if it is, then go ahead and install, personally I am running Ubuntu with Vmachine " Virtual machine" it runs the .iso (disk image) and installs in the specific size you want IN the program, it's quite nifty,
jjtheclown 3 years ago
If u delete the Linux partitions the boot manager Grub will disappear. Windows will run some disk repair tasks and that's it. Just install windows first and than linux. U can reuse the / partition to install the new Ubuntu version... make a /home for keeping personal info that would stay untouched when reinstalling...U should learn shell programming that will help u use linux for real...or at least some basic commands.. clicking it's not the way
artyroly 3 years ago
actually not 100% right...a lot of the guys at my university from non-CS background use their *unix OS seamlessly without knowing a lot of shell programming... i understand you need to know like real basics but that's about it unless you need to do some extensive stuff with your *unix machine
ayushcena 3 years ago 2
what would u do if u want to replace the blank spaces in file names with _ ? I mean how long it would take u to do that manually, for every file on your disk... it should take u about 10 sec to write the command, than the computer would do the rest...yeah you could make a program to do that..but you would miss all the Unix essence. Of course you can use Linux ignoring that there is a Shell "thins" over there but what would u do when there is no program/button to do the job u want?
artyroly 3 years ago
see...you are again partially right... you call this behavior as being part of using linux for real... see don't get me wrong.. i am a CS nerd who is deep into shell programming and rarely use the GUI myself... the thing is.. beginners sometimes get scared off by this talk (learning shell programming for using *unix).. and we shouldn't be preaching shell programming at least here learning shell programming is good.. but you can get the work done without knowing it.. my Prof does :P
Peace out!
ayushcena 3 years ago
From a beginner point of view that should be "totally" true; but when it comes to doing "some more",and there's no button, or you're in a hurry and have no time for having fun with the mouse, then they recall a scary you_tube post where people were talking about shell programming and commands and stuff like that :D;If anyone using Linux gets anything but curious when hearing "shell programming" they would actually get sacked in no time from a company that asks u to "know unix".w u t best of luck
artyroly 3 years ago
the thing is.. we both are seemingly alluding at the same thing but from different angles :P
a new comer DOES not need to know the details about shell programming to start using *unix, it's the same for windows as well..you ideally should know about stuff before delving into the OS, and it is the same for any other OS.. i agree that windows may provide just a bit more through the GUI than what *unix does..
but i again repeat..newbies don't need to know shell programming to start using *unix
ayushcena 3 years ago
:D OK, I don't want to extend this any more, it's just that when someone says that he/she's using Unix (which actually doesn't exist), u know what I mean, well they are actually using the console for making their life easier, otherwise they are just using a window system not Unix. That is why people like it so much, u can do almost anything using shell programming and Ansi C :D (please don't start :D)... if u really are into Unix I invite you to use Plan9...for real...good luck !!! :-)

@darkparodox23:
Just because a person doesn't know how to use a device with Ubuntu, doesn't mean it lacks the ability to use a particular device. See UbuntuForums website and ask your questions there. This is a video site, where people comment on videos, generally if you want tech support you should find somewhere else better suited for such a thing.
velvethandofdarkness 3 years ago 4
right now i am running ubuntu 8.07 i think hardy heron, anyways, i am switching b/w this, opensuse 11 and mandriva(2008.1 spring) mandriva works best out of the box, and looks the best, ubuntu is "easy" to use (exept when trying to do tings with my new zen), and opensuse 11 is very vesrsitile, and is the oly distro i have gotten to run games. i am a linux noob, and need help with hardware issues, could someone plz respond to this comment on which distro you think is best? : )
(no flaming) thx
Bewareomef 3 years ago
@Bewareomef:
Some will tell you their honest opinion, others are fanboys and will hype their favorite distro, don't trust opinions, try several and use what YOU like
velvethandofdarkness 3 years ago
I'm a Linux user myself. I have tried 3 different distros. Fedora, Kubuntu and Ubuntu. I must say that out of those three, Ubuntu has deffinately come out on top. I have never had a single problem with it. It is almost flawless. I have countlessly switched between windows and Linux for the main reason that with Linux i missed the games. However, I'm not settled with Ubuntu and am willing to sacrifice good games for security and stability which Ubuntu Linux provides.

Check out Wine and Cedega for getting Windows games to work in Linux.
velvethandofdarkness 3 years ago 4
thanks for the advice, but i've tried running world of warcraft through wine, and it turns out a little buggy. I'm guessing it requires more hardware to run through wine.
sickspastic 3 years ago
@sickspastic:
Cedega may also be an option if it supports WoW.
velvethandofdarkness 3 years ago 3
Ubuntu is one of my favorite Linux distributions. Although it does have its rough edges, I really like Ubuntu and the way the community is structured. I appreciate that Canonical is acutally helping the Free and Open Source software community by helping fix bugs with upstream, even though I think some other people do it to... Ubuntu takes what I like of Debian and makes it simple and easy to use with an extremely strong community. That's why I really like Ubuntu.
