I have no problem with the more experimental nature of waking the nation and 22 dreams, i like the sound, but I dont understand the critical attention they got - creatively they may have been a success but in terms of memorable songs they were distinctly low par. to me anyway. this sounds a bit more tuneful not really very.. memorable at all

Relax, everybody. Stop comparing everything he does to the Jam. I bet none of us want to be measured by what we did when we were in our late teens/early 20s. Forward.
@dan32113 Actually, I'm not a big lover of Town Called Malice, btw when you write a song name, don't just capitalise the first word.
What makes you such an expert, or are you just going by the critics reviews? I appreciate what he was trying to do, and for what it is, its good, I just don't like it. I love Paul Weller, I collect Weller stuff, but that doesn't mean I have to love everything he does. Get a fucking grip, I have my opinion, you have yours
First time I've heard this and I don't like it at all. Weller's done heaps of great stuff over the years but the last few albums have been a disappointment for me. As Is Now is the last great Weller album, this is just, well, it's nothing memorable.
things move on wellers new stuff moves with the times i love old weller but actually prefere new weller it sounds like your stuck in your youth your out of time and out of tune you sound like a pop tart stuck on a grove

@drsnape07 good point, I mean look how the Beatles sound evolved in even a couple of yrs. Some Weller fans just want the Jam, they even slate the Style Council, which I thought was brilliant. You"re correct, some people never move on. Paul is pushing himself, & its great to hear...

Love the way he keeps moving on musically, if you stand still you get stale..as much as i love the Jam i would rather see him just perform his last 2 albums .. much like he did around the time of stanley road...you can focus on his new music then without comparing everything to the jam..would rather see him drop the old stuff from his set, think his shows would be sharper too. The new stuff sounds fresh .
I love Weller but really this and the last LP? They are not very good..and I love him! I l have loved the Jam, TSC, solo stuff and I loved 22 dreams cos it was a bit mod, a bit folk, a bit rock dad, soul and pop which I like about him, he doesn't stay the same that is very good! Its just this and the last LP ...No Paul ..No ...mid life crisis more like no Paul no...
i bet you all buy the album!.i will. only got into weller 1983 so wasnt a jam fan but you jam fans do go on a bit dont you. give the man a chance, imagine his albums sounded the same how shit would that be.nice one weller keep um comin.

What do you people want, repeats of Going Underground, soft melodies such as You Do Something to Me, same old, same old. If that's what you want keep listening to the old great classics and I'll move on with the man himself. Thanks Paul for new adventures!!!
As a mod, I respect that he's pushing boundaries within his music and becoming more modern, but honestly, it seems as though he's trying to put elements of other peoples music into his, and it really isn't necessary, one of the many reasons I love Weller is that he's got his own individual style and to hear him using elements of others music is upsetting, so I agree with both sides of the people commenting in that yes, it is good but he does need to take a step back and find his own style again.
you lot don't have a clue about music. This is a great song. Just because he changes his style each album doesn't mean it "sucks", also stop wining about how he used to be great in The Jam, that was 30 years ago. Move on.
22 Dreams is an excellent album and will always be rated as one of his best by music critics, we are the mods, we are the mods, we are we are we are the mods! and we don't stand still.
Pushing at the boundaries as usual, not content to run off the same old stuff means Paul is still artistically alive unlike all of his contemporaries.
He has nothing to prove you cunts. The man is a fucking genius. Granted this stuff is no "In The City" but I would rather hear this than most of the shit in the charts these days. Do not take what he is doing for granted, cause i know that you would be one of the fagots who would say "I loved his music so much" if he was to die, it happend with Jacko and Amy Winehouse. I love everything he has done and i always will.
@thisisandrewdevine fuck off you homophobe ...you don't know what you're on about! From a true Weller fan....it's okay to have a critical ear ffs! If you don't like one track you don't have to baa baa along saying you like everything he ever made...
Two singles in 2011 'Starlite' and 'Around The Lake' how diverse do you want it ? The man refuses to stand still 99% of the young bands today have nowhere near the musical bollox Weller has. Long may it continue.
you cant blame the guy for bein original and tryin new things, ive followed weller since the late 70's and granted not everything he has done has appealed to me but you can say that about any artist that has constantly produced songs for over a 1/4 of a decade.
Good tune. All you whining about the past should just listen to them tunes. Its nice to see an artist not living off past glory, still evolving and not being defined by there past. What do people want, 30 years of Thats Entertainment.
LOVE THIS THING! That forbidding baseline, then the Farfisa, the machine gun drums, and the vocals, describing trouble (is the Lake the Atlantic, are the troubles economic/political all around?) - the tambourine - perfectly placed, -- a window on a dangerous situation in the world, and likely a song that's part of a mosaic combined with others on the disc. "22 Dreams" began my fascination with this incredible, new way to "tell" albums, then "Wake up the Nation". Can't wait for the new disc!
What happened to you Weller, you used to be my idol. 22 Dreams was bad enough, now this!?
Went to see him live last year in the Academy in Glasgow, played all his old tracks and I could have cried with joy! But what a major disappointment this shit is
@kaz3010 22 Dreams was brilliant! Do suffer from a lack of imagination, if you want Town called malice, listen to a CD. Better still Staus Quo, they play the same song over & over again. You probably love 3 chord idiot rock n roll. Leave 22 Dreams, to the conissuers, who enjoy an artist who evolves!

Will anyone be talking about this in 20 or 30 years time.... no because its crap. Does this mean anything to anyone?... in the way that That's Entertainment or Down In The Tubestation did. Does it have a punchy riff or memorable melody with insightful lyrics
