They didn't do that "gender differences" thing until 4th generation and the last time that Dodrio has been seen was around the middle of the 3rd generation(during the Chronicles).

Gary is the model of what a DECENT Pokemon League ranking trainer is supposed to be. He actually TRAINS his Pokemon unlike Ash, he switches out his teams so that he always has an army of strong Pokemon, instead of just the top six, over level 50, and he actually knows about battle strategy, unlike Ash.

That's why Gary is the shit and only noobs and rookies respect Ash. Gary is an actual GOOD trainer. (Also, Richie and Harrison from the Johto League, who don't get enough credit.)

The problem is, the Anime follows almost NO rules of the game, whatsoever. No levels, no move powers, not even really type restrictions. Battling in the anime is mostly just about how "clever" or "creative" you can be with Pokemon, which is what Ash does. Moves like Tackle and Water Gun are only as strong as the Pokemon.

Considering how restrictive the games are, any decent trainer in the game would be 1000 times better in the Anime, considering they could use any move any way they wanted.

If Ash had Squirtle, Charizard, Tauros, Snorlax, Sceptile, etc. Ash would beat Paul hands down, but then it wouldn't be a rivalry.
