I did everything in your video and even went to the website for more info, and it works splendidly. but when it says you should see three windows open up when you start the software, I get four: a DOS window. Is that supposed to happen and how can I make that not visible?
Yes the DOS box comes up. You can ignore it or minimize it. Closing it will finish your synfig session :) Eventually we'll have to figure out how to persuade GTK not to show it. Until then, it's useful as it shows error messages for debug.
Windows has a 'PATH' Environment variable - a list of directories which it checks whenever you type a command in the DOS box or run from the start menu. If it finds an executable that matches what you typed in one of those dirs, it runs it. If not, it returns with 'not found'
For some reason, it's failing to find the GTK install - either you're installing it in an unexpected place, or permission rights are hosing it up. Someone else commented that installing everything into the same dir (GTK & Synfig components) worksaround this problem. The next version will have one installer for all 4 components.
Unfortunately, Synfig relies on the GTK toolkit to create the windows and dialogs. I don't believe GTK is supported under Windows ME. Also if your PC is from that era, it may not have the horsepower to render anything more than a simple animation. :(
By the time you've replied, I managed to get it to work properly with one exception.
It says Pango Error: Fonts fallbacks faild!
Everything- they're little Font boxes. The file menu, the title bar, the status bar at the bottom... everything. The toolbox... everything is a little font box. Which font is Synfig suppoed to use? Whatever it is, Clearly, I'm missing it :-)

For any windows users watching this video, I followed the instructions with the software downloaded from the synfig site and after installing them without changing any of the installation parameters tried running synfig studio and got an error message that a .dll file wasn't found. You can solve this problem easily by installing ALL FOUR COMPONENTS IN THE SAME FILE "c:\program files\synfig" and the program will run just fine.
Your error was probably due to the GTK path not getting set up correctly. The next version of Synfig will have a one file installer for all components :)
hi....your tutorial is very helpful except that i downloaded an alternative to the THG...its called CPU Control..i already extracted the files and i dont know what to do with it...please help
This is simply ridiculous. When you need 5 downloads, several installation tutorials and a video to learn how to install a simple program, then there is something seriously wrong. I already tried it and just the installation it's a big turn off; I'll wait for a portable or single installer version. This people should learn from Gimp and Inkscape.
I do understand (btw I use a Mac, so for me installing programs is a breeze, except for Synfig Studio, which currently cannot be installed without using some other framework or something), however, if they really want to have any success with that program under other OSes they have to be user friendly. It already has a crappy installation procedure under Windows, and it requires a lot of command lining under OS X. Programmers must try to understand that not every OS is user unfriendly like Lin

Yes, looks like the original link on Tom's hardware guide appears to be broken. If you google "tom's hardware guide task assignment" and scroll down, you should see several software sites have cached copies of it that you can download.
No, I don't, because If I ever have to do any animation (2D/3D) I don't use OpenSource programs. I don't have time to waste with un-intuitive, un productive and less featured programs, sorry.
when ever I go to download thg task assignment manager the link appears to be broken and it won't let me download it , could someone tell me where to to get it else where?????
This is fucking stupid. Couldn't they just do a single package with everything inside? Classical Linux attitude, "the harder, the better, the smarter". Fucking retards.
I know, tell me about it. The whole point of computer software is to solve problems and make things simpler. Just because something complicated confuses you doesn't mean you're stupid. This is one reason Linux will never take off like some people hope. Some Distros are very nice, but users make mostly crap software (excluding, for example, Blender).
I can't seem to find the file for synfig, and neither the links "synfig" or "synfigstudio" are working. I think it might be a little downtime, but if someone knows something that would be great.
It uses different components (all the gtk stuff and the likes) which are cross-platform and cannot all be hooked into one installer. Theoretically you could make one executable which runs each of the 4 installers one at a time but that would simply be redundant :)
Why there are tutorials if everything is so simple as you say?!
It's just that complicate manner of the opensource community. They write and develop programs and then they make it extra complicate to install and use. It's just like a closed circle. "Ooooh, we are so intellectual.
We are not in need of explaining anything.
Before we start a mediaplayer we put in machine code!" I exaggerated, but it's like that.
There is nothing open source complicated or exaggerated about it. Four Windows executables, click through the typical Windows wizards just like it has been ever since DOS was taken over from back in the 1980's. Unless you have only installed windows software via autoplay, this is the typical way to install all closed source Windows applications, dumbass.
Overall it really is safer to do stuff manually (the complicated parts) and pretty quickly you'll catch on to all the commands just like you caught on to double clicking the icons on the desktop! But I'll have to say it is totally up to you as to whether you wanna pick up the free software with the cost of learning some extra things or paying for the expensive, easy-to-use software.
But why you cannot combine user-friendly AND free software? I just call it user-unfriendly, when you have to watch an online-tutorial on youtube just to know how you get that program to run...
In my opinion as a fairly experienced PC user, doing that stuff manually is safer. You then don't have to trust an install file not to screw up your system for you. I do understand for some people they would rather not do it them selves in fear of screwing up their systems, and that's totally fine.
In theory, if you already have gtk/gtkmm installed you would need synfig to install another copy when it installs. In theory, you could just install synfig-core if you just wanted to render pre-made sif files.
In practice, you are correct, few windows users would have gtk/gtkmm or would want a command line renderer. They want the gui. Eventually someone will produce a one click installer. I haven't had the time to make that happen. :(
Like Flash is any less complicated? Once you install Synfig, in my opinion everything is so much easier and there is a larger community WILLING to offer you support!
This message shows up if synfig can't find GTKmm. Did you install that? Did the path variable get updated to point to the c:\gtk dir? Are you trying to install it anywhere other than the default install location?
You'll need to follow the instructions on restricting Synfig to only one core. As it stands right now, Synfig isn't multi-thread safe. The error message sounds like you only installed studio? You need to install all 4 apps - GTK, GTKmm, Synfig, Synfig studio.
umm i did all this but when i go to start it it says "This application has failed to start because libglibmm-2.4-1.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."
The main toolbox should have a line about 3/4 of the way down that says 'composite'. Hover your mouse over that, and you'll see a popup telling you that's the default blend method. click on it and you get a drop down menu with all of the blend methods. Immediately below that control is a slider that controls 'default opacity' which is the default transparency setting you're looking for.
I downloaded and followed your instructions as well as I could, although the website has changed quite a bit. I cannot open Synfig studio, because it always tells me it "cannot find libglibmm-2.4.dll. Reinstalling may fix this problem."
Most likely cause is that GTK and GTKMM are not installed, or the PATH environment variable was not updated so that Synfig could find them. Default location is c:\GTK.
You obviously haven't seen my animations! I'm still learning myself. Check out some animation books at the library. Being able to draw well is a big plus.
Hadn't heard of pivot, but yes, Synfig is much more full featured than pivot from the looks of it. Of course the downside is that it is harder to get the most out of...
Nice tutorial, I have to try this. I just wish it wasnt so complicated. Instead of having to download 4 different things, why not just download one simple program?

Nice; the famous open source icon jumble... Audacity, Blender, Gimp, and now Synfig. Almost everything needed for the production of entertainment in the digital medium, all free of charge.
My other PC had RedHat on it until it went 'phut'. Unfortunately I have to run windows at work, so do the same at home but that doesn't stop me from running my favourite programs! There's Inkscape and Firefox on there as well.
i've downloaded it all good but now when i open it up and start working on it it keeps randomly crashing and coming up with the error thing that asks if u want to send an error report - can u help? Its rely getting on my nerves
cheers chris, but i installed it but i was like fuck this cause it was kinda complicated and it had all these windows coming up all over the place.hehe
Yes, the number of windows has been raised as an issue. It's similar to the Gimp, if you've ever used that, where each tool has its own dialog. We're looking into ways of having all the windows linked so that they can all be minimized or restored together, or even a single window interface. Everytime you find something that works for one person, someone else has the opposite opinion :)
Synfig is powerful, but like all tools, you have to invest to get the best from it.
Inkscape is another open-source vector graphics program, whose focus is SVG-compliance, but their interface is intuitive, yet simple. I might check it out for an idea of a simple single-window interface.
once you install synfig how do you get onto it??
i went through the installation wizard and saved it but how do you open it, it's just a load of files :/

Redundant?! No, I would call it rather user-friendly. I mean, the majority of the users are not ready to install 4
program-packages. What one can often see in open platform software is that it's way too complicate to install. Often you have to write even
command-lines, modify system files, and so on. That's so useless, I think.

How is downloading 4 packages and clicking a Microshit wizard next button a few times in each complicated.

Amen. Now he just needs to shortcut to Ubuntu (if that's possible) and he's opensource set. =)

My other PC had RedHat on it until it went 'phut'. Unfortunately I have to run windows at work, so do the same at home but that doesn't stop me from running my favourite programs! There's Inkscape and Firefox on there as well.

This doesn't seem compatible with Vista. It keeps telling me that "libsynfig-0.dll was not found."

Nevermind, I reinstalled synfig and it seems to be working fine now.

If you have vista is it compatible and do you have to installl it differently?

cheers chris, but i installed it but i was like fuck this cause it was kinda complicated and it had all these windows coming up all over the place.hehe
emerofom22 3 years ago

All 4 steps come with uninstall options, so you can easily uninstall if you do run into problems. Let me know how it goes.
