I don't think that Nemorino is sure that Adina loves him at this point in the story. After all, isn't he going off to become a soldier? Towards the end of the opera Nemorino says to Adina:
"Poiché non sono amato, voglio morir soldato: non v'ha per me più pace se m'ingannò il dottor." I think that Sabbatini's interpretations is dramatically valid and that he has studied the libretto. I read in the Los Angeles Times that he planned to stop singing in 2007. Has he done so?

This is the most chillingly beautiful "una furtiva lagrima" I have ever heard and witnessed. That(Sabbatini) is THE Nemorino, comtemplating internally, his emotions and his joy, hiding in the sunflower garden. This is the masterpiece so seldom seen. I wish I was there to capture the atmosphere. Praise to the choreographers by perfcet set up. Glory to Sabbatini. It's just breath taking.Thank you for posting such a rare treasure.
Totally agree wit steakopera, Sabbatini,'s musical concept on Nemorino;s aria isbeing internalized,. emotions of sadness, despair are so strong that Nemorino is by no by means a sinplistic country boy easily manipulated by Norina., Here the angiish is a key to understang that Nemorino's suffering is mature and passionated, and that he has to die, he is willing to follow that way, being poor is a disgrace but his love for Norima is is too powerfull, burning his soul wihtout mercy.
Una furtiva lagrima "A sullen and secretive tear That started there in her eye Those socialising bright young things Seemed to provoke its envy What more searching need I do? She loves me, that I see. For just one moment the beating Of her hot pulse could be felt! With her sighing confounding Momentarily my sighs! Oh God, I shall expire; I can't ask for more." Now fellow operalovers, go listen to Björling! ;)
Why should he be sad singing this aria?He has just seen love in Adinas eyes, love towards him!If I am not mistaken Donizetti composed another version of this aria which is lighter in character and responds better to the text. (Performed by R.Alagna in the Lyon version) Although it is not a happy-go-light aria it is most certainly not a sad one!Nemorino is facing the fact that his dream of marrying Adina is coming true.Sabbatinis Nemorino looks more psychopathic than happily melancolic.
@omvelde83 I agree. this is so weird. Anguish? Over what. He is supposed to be ecstatic that he realizes Adina loves him. This opera is a comic opera, for heavens's sake, with a lot of girl-boy teasing and misunderstanding. Florez does the same thing, appearing sad in this aria. People don't seem to understand this rustic romanticism.
@omvelde83 The melodic line is not melancholic, but reflective. He is deep in thought and revery. He realizes that Adina is in love with him, he is awed by this, it is wondrous and unbelievable at the same time, and he ends the aria in ecstasy. Listen to Schipa, even watch him and his groundbreaking interpretation.
He is a bit pitchy, but damn, what an interpretation. I've heard this aria a million times and this is the most original rendition I've ever heard. So unique and moving.
I have never seen this aria sung with a great singer and great actor. This is the first time, because the scene is always sung sad but not sad in his mind, heart and soul like this performance. Indeed amazing.

Attenzione! Si tratta della romanza "Una furtiva lagrima" e non di "quanto è bella, quanto è cara". Sempre Elisir, ma sono cose diverse!
