that moment when he first sees the chrysalid. the moment when you can just see his mind going FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUU. the moment that he knows atleast 50% of his team will die.
Jutah, Drake and Yvel are all dead. Only Drake seemed to receive any remorse.
Luckily Kano seems to be a rising star, and Luther also seems to be quite competent. And as much as I don't want to admit it, I enjoy watching Joey somehow live through every mission despite beng a moron.
so the aliens know to send in Chryssalids because i have so much heavy weaponry at my house the aliens would only have to push the big red button in my room and the war would be over
Chryssalids are nasty yeah, but not as bad as some people would make you believe. Mainly because of their AI that oftentimes makes them run around or hide instead of assaulting your helpless soldiers.
I hate Mutons and Ethereals with their ridiculous stats much more.
I ended up using a walking bomb solution to Chryssalids. Any time I hit a terror mission with them I have every one of my troops arm a grenade and stow it in their pack.. when the Chryssalid takes them their items drop, including the activated grenade... boom goes new zombie and Chryssalid. That of course means I keep troops much more spread out so they don't blow each other up
That was pretty funny actually. Just as you were saying: "Nothing has happened this month" I was thinking that we were due for the next terror mission. Wish granted. :D
@Zylo587 Plasma canons will outrange everything except battleships and have 100 shots each. They tend to make a mess out of even medium ships but if you need it crashed they'll crash them for you. You tend to get a lot of points just for crashing them even aside from recovering the wreckage.
@Zylo587 a full squad, cant remember if its 3 or 4 interceptors, equipped with avalanche missles can with luck take down a battle ship. there is no way a single interceptor could ever take on a battleship, however a avenger with dual plasma cannons can sometimes solo a battleship
@legionthantos really? i never tried that i always figured the lightening would go down first having only a single weapon slot, therefor having half the damage output
@legionthantos i will take your word for it. i still remember the feeling i got when i had 3 bases operating with two avengers each and 2 more bases just radar outposts. i got to the point where i stopped having terror missions cause i kept shooting the ships down before they could strike
@NerdKing2nd A lightning with fusion ball launcher has around a 10% to 30% chance of soloing a Battleship, depending on if you get the "sweet spot" in the weapon ranges I.E where the battleship doesnt do as much damage as it usually does. Atleast, that's what the trick says. It's more luck than anything else.
Interesting fact: building two of the same type of radar stations/hyper wave decoders in the same base DOES NOT make the effects stack. However, building different radar station types/hyper wave decoders will stack the effects. For example, a base with a small radar station, a large radar station, and a hyper wave decoder will have a larger range than a base with three hyper wave decoders.
yup this games is definitly evil, halfway through my first month. BAM! Surprise base mission. I barely survived with one soldier who was wounded and would have died next turn.
Cryssalids are tough enough that you'll often knock it unconscious rather than killing it outright. Under such circumstances, I'll often toss a Proximity Grenade right on top of the body, so should it get up and move, I'll have a reasonable chance of killing it for good. Even if the grenade fails to kill it, though, I'll still have a rather loud alarm that there is now a live Cryssalid running about.
You don't actually buy the Skyranger, you lease it. So it's 500k out of your coffers every month you have it! That's another reason why the alien tech ships are better, they are much cheaper to maintain than their earthling counterparts.
@jonaslep Correct, but by the midgame the dollar cost is negligible while the cost of constant elerium draining into fuel takes can be crippling unless one takes steps to harvest it continually.
"Much cheaper"? Wha? Alien ships cost a finite resource to refuel (Elerium). Money is easy to get even early game (and you can just built stuff to sell but you can never built elerium) and the Skyranger has excellent long range/patrolling ability, excellent carrying ability, and costs you no elerium to fuel.
Now the interceptor is poor but not because of the monthly cost, more because it's slow and weak.
@Murkglow In my opinion the Skyranger is okay to keep early to early-mid, but you should get rid of the Interceptor because it can let WAY too many ships get away. And if it can keep up with a ship and use weaker missiles its a fair compromise (due to less wreckage chance, at least this is all my opinion and experience I've had).
Also, It looks like you DID taze yourself a Leader Kiko. Huh. Better lucky than good sometimes. Sparkle, your death was not in vain! Well mostly not in vain.
Chryssalids are such a spike in difficulty. While the game is by no means easy, as soon as Chryssalids pop up it goes from "no! My team" to "The human fecal matter has collided with the bladed air circulation device".
Makes me wonder if their design was thought through completely.
@CookieCrumb23 It was probably meant to be such a jump in difficulty. With pre-modern games winning the game often was a real achievement and not something given like nowadays. The difficulty choice of X-Com affected alien stats, alien AI (remembering X-Com positions longer), number of Aliens in a mission and how early certain types of aliens will appear. On Beginner it could be a while before meeting Chryssalids.
@CookieCrumb23 Then again, I think it slightly more fair to fight a Chryssalid than to fight psionic attacks with diddly squat defensive methods at the time. They might wreck a squad, but Ethereals and their hijinks can do it without even having to lift a finger or leave the comfort of a room. Not to mention they are crack shots and have Sectopods backing them up (and most people have already made the switch to plasma unless they did keep their laser weapons.)
What's bad is that I ended up having to restart a new playthrough because of an Etherial terror mission. So far I've had to go into a terror mission without my team fully equiped with laser rifles but against Floaters it's been OK. No deaths in that mission, but I bet my strategy helped. Pin alien down with just about whatever I could throw at it and nail it with a HE rocket as it cowered.
I should probably upload this, but I once had a Snakeman terror mission with NO chryssalids, buildings OR civilians. Anyone else have a screwy mission like that?
My last squad that did this lost about half their number. Mainly because Crysallids kept popping out of no where when I thought an area was clear. End result there were quite a few zombified soilders.

By the way, Very Large is always a battleship. Large can mean supply ship or terror ship, Mediums are abductors or harvesters.

@CookieCrumb23 You could say the same thing when psy attacks or blaster bombs are spamed by the aliens. Instant mayhem most of the time.
But common, Chryssalids and psy attacks and blaster bombs are some of the many reasons why we love UFO/TFTD/X-COM Apoc', isn't it ? ;-)
