Yes, there are 256 separate servo motors in this artwork, each one independently moving a rod back and forth.

I use custom made 3.5 turn RC Sail Winch Servos with a custom lasercut aluminium and steel slider setup to get the 400mm of linear movement with 128 increment resolution on each rod.
