ANYONE WHO WANTS TO HIRE ME TO HELP BUILD A MODULAR HOME, AND WHO CAN HELP ME BUILD ONE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW: my facebook page is Deborah Niemeyer (in baby blue background) friend me. cheers
If you know people, especially friends/family who are contractors, you'll be able to build something like this for 40-80k. Research all the materials needed and look for the hook up (discount). Im doing a project with 6 shipping containers and it reduced the costs by 60%. Im looking to spend 60k max on my home and hopefully will have it paid off in 6 years. Unfortunately people selling these eco friendly homes are ripping you off just as bad as anybody. Do it yourself or start networking.
@TheDirtyBurd I'm trying to find a way to purchase something like this on a budget. I have a not "too low" fico, full time work, but can't make a down payment for a house...that's where i'm stuck. I don't know anyone who can help me out....I'm going to do some research but as you say, it's also who you know, and how much cash you have on hand. IT SEEEEEMS SO SIMPLE yet not enough to grasp. PRAY FOR ME
Personally I believe the cost (too high) is because it's her idea. I've been looking into Modulars (for a weight room my basement ceiling is to low for machines. Looking at about 750 sq ft... And I will be utilizing Home Depot despite some opinions it WILL be as nice as this one.............Without the cost. Construction will start & be completed this June, and I will post the results............It's just a box the concept doesn't warrant that expense..........
There is no conceivable way that the "green" in this 700 sq. ft house at a cost of $225,000 which, by the way, has not one Universal Design feature so it could be adaptable to a person with a disability could use, could ever provide the homeowner with a payback on the cost. She's selling the listeners a bill of goods that makes no sense.
It is not good design if you make a shoe box cost as much as a Town House. The "Good Design" is suppose to be the enticement for people to consider a pre fab home. But if you charge people for that "Good Design" then why not just buy a traditional house for the same price? This is why we as a nation will fail, because we do things that is supposed to be "Good" and put premium price on it because it has curb appeal. If U want to do a world a favor, don't charge people 200K for pre fab homes.
If you are considering modular or prefab home, building with recycled shipping containers is worth taking a look at.
Good resource is the Residential Shipping Container Primer website. A SHOWCASE OF SHIPPING CONTAINER HOMES AND BUILDINGDS, AND A DO IT YOURSELF (DIY) REFERENCE FOR CONVERTING RECYCLED INTERMODAL CARGO SHIPPING CONTAINERS INTO BUILDINGS AND? ARCHITECTURE.
Lots of great example buildings, details, facts, and links to other articles...
@unit666industries In all do honesty... yes, i would give around that much for that house. I can do all the finishings my self. I would not go over 45k. Its super, super simple, easy to build, would take about a week or so, and should be cheap as well. But whatever, i bet she's making a killing right now off of these homes
i second the motion....hihihi!!!! ridiculous fab house prices, if everyone is so concerned of global warming & anemic economy...etc....than this people must be banckrupted period!!!!
Michelle Kaufmann designs some of the most beautiful houses out there, prefabs or not. However, maybe in parts of California having large windows on three sides of a house is "energy efficient," but in any place where heating and cooling is a priority, glass (even triple pane) is not good insulation. Google Passiv Haus to see how the Germans got serious about true environmental design years ago. So, MK's houses are nice modern designs, reasonably priced, but not like zero energy homes.
I might guess that you don't live in Southern California. That's a bargain! Not only that, she said that as square footage goes up, the price goes down. You also save money on utilities and don't have to live in a toxic house. I'm a FAN of prefab!!

isn't it more green to buy and re-use and old home versus buying and building a new one?

150k-225k is not worth it. It should be around 80k, I bet she pockets a good chunk and spends it on her premium gas to fill up her mercedes tnk.
