I fed a grasshopper to my arowana & that came out.....Can these things live in fish? do they use the grasshopper to host jump? does my fish most likely have these now (i took the 1 i saw out of the tank) if you know something about this hit me up please.
I caught one a long time ago and kept it in a jar of water for like a year cause it was strange looking! Funny thing is it would die and ice would revive it?? Weird!
I found one in water come out from drawn centipede. I just take it out from water and burn it. I guess centipede couldn't get it any more and just jump into the water. :D :D :D Hehhehe
@carl7707 It sounds like they make the grasshopper seek water... That's why it looked sick - and I stepped on it. They don't infect humans, although in Asia, or certain MTV prankster shows, I'm sure they might find a way to eat it... BTW how does anyone know that they don't infect humans? Did someone have to eat one to find out?!
they are mostly in grasshoppers and crickets and are everywhere.. they make the insects drown themselves so that they can escape into the water to find a mate... it creepy.. but a way of life i guess..weird
live in bugs what hapends is there eggs are wvery ware mostly in damp spots and bugs comes wat the egg and it haytch inside the bug or bug eats another bug with the thing in it nd now the bug has it too.very to 0 a human would every have one inside them or animals. they also live in mud puttles horse hair worm name.
lol we dont have natural worms lol. bugs get into anything even sealed stuff it looks sealed to us to them bugs its a tight fit and done. but we do have a bacterial parasite wich lives in every human. if we dint have it we woulnd be able to absorb the nutrience we need from food. its a symbiotic realtion ship.
They come out of other grasshopper when they are ready to lay larva so it probably dropped some baby hairworms in that plastic container you used. I hope you didn't eat out of that :)
It's a Nematomorpha or hairworm. You can see the thing come out of a cricket/grasshopper on utube "alien parasites" or on wikipedia lookup Nematomorpha or hairworm. The external links on the bottom have some cool videos. When I stepped on this sick grasshopper, it came coiling out just like on utube alien parasites.
Yes they can harm humans, possibly kill them but not likely. You can also get them by walking bare foot in the dirt, or bitting your finger nails with dirt under them. The eggs go into your body and hatch. I'm not positive on this number but I'm pretty sure, but they can lay over 100,000 eggs a day in your body... not cool huh?
@basil044 Horsehair worms only parasitize invertebrates such as insects. To complete their life cycle, they must infect large invertebrates that are relatively long-lived. Horsehair worms are harmless to vertebrates because they cannot parasitize people, livestock, pets, and birds. They also do not infect plants. If humans ingest the worms, they may encounter some mild discomfort of the intestinal tract but infection never occurs.
sure hope you don't reuse that tupperware for your food...
