@theteejmiester Hi there, I do installs for others. See my website rayman4449.dynip com and see the DCS Installs page, I have pricing out there. I have an email address posted on the main webpage that you can use to contact me directly if you like. Thanks.
@8010cookie I would say like any other G scale engine.. not sure on the interval as I do a visual inspection to determine if the oil as dried up or not. It's not needed very often relatively speaking but if it looks dry oil it.
@joe26692 Thank you very much for posting that. I'll keep this info handy. Was this the gear on the main axle? Do they sell the rest of the gears in the gear box? Is it made out of metal?
@5utube12 Hi there, sure thing. I really don't understand why some of the mfgs dont use all metal gears, it can't cost that much more to make. I would bet you might be able to get just the replacement gears in metal and that would keep the cost down. Honestly the chances of having an issue shouldn't be that great and a worse case fix, replacing with new plastic gears isn't that hard if you have some experience in taking things apart. Hope you find another soon! Keep me posted and post avid!
@5utube12 It would probably be more accurate to say there have been some with the issues caused by splitting/fractured gears. Out of say 5 engines, I've seen one with that issue and replaced them with Bachmann gears and has been running fine since then. I'm not sure which NWSL gears or gearbox to use but if I was to buy one of these personally I would probably look into just for added insurance. However it's a great engine at a great price and wouldn't hesitate to buy it!
@5utube12 The truth of the matter is that any company that has chosen to use plastic gears in G scale engines has resulted in lower levels of reliability. USA Trains uses plastic in their diesels, Aristocraft in steam and diesel and Bachmann in theirs. (see my website for more information on plastic failures for them) Only MTH and Accucraft produce engines with all metal gears and solid metal axles. (USA Trains does use all metal gears in their steamers)
@WandATexas Hi, MTH has entered the HO market and has a Protosound sound and control board with smoke units etc for HO with chuffing smoke. There are videos on Youtube if you want to do a search. It's pretty amazing. : )
@StudiosGunslinger Hi there, thanks! On your question, this is running MTH DCS Protosound 2, which isn't DCC. MTH has just completed a protosound board that can be controlled via DCC but it hasn't hit the market yet. The smoke chuffing is all controlled via the DCS sound/control board and isn't a simple on/off of the smoke fan... The only other control system that has this that I'm aware of is Lionel in O gauge...no DCC boards can do this from what I know. Hope this helps.
@StudiosGunslinger On the setting for puffing smoke, with the DCS remote you can adjust the smoke output in three levels and can adjust the number of chuffs per wheel revolution from 1 to 16. (it's set to 4 here) You can also of course turn it on and off.
hi rayman, thinking of buying a mth 484 loco,dc motor sound, what do i hve to look for,it is on ebay, any info would be helpful, all my other locos are dc,many thanks, peter in ozzie
Wow, I have one of these with Phoenix sound, all weathered up but smoke is the only thing that I always felt let it down.. even after I replaced the Bachmann unit with more reliable Seuthe units, Still no chuff of course - how do you make it chuff, is it a custom unit or something available to buy ?
The chuff is one of the control functions of the MTH DCS Protosound 2 board. It independently controls the heating elements and the fan motor so the fan pulses can be at the precise moment the chuff sound is made. The board also decelerates the fan after the chuff to get a clean cut off so unless you went with DCS you won't get what you see in the video.
Truely amazed, so much so I just purchased this engine to attempt this task. Ray do you have any documentation on how to install it? 10/5 Incredible !!!!
Hi, thanks. I don't have any documentation on the install. The DCS upgrade kits that you can get from MTH do have an install manual that shows you what you need to do, but it's not specific to any particular engine.
@southern4501isawesom Hi there, it does have a Protosound 2 board installed which is an integrated sound and control board so what you would consider a decoder and sound. The Protosound boards (1, 2 & 3) can all be controlled with the MTH DCS TIU and wireless remote and have the new TIU Rev L TIUs in stock now.
Ray, youve out done yourself this time, Honestly, Great job. Your conversions really bring these engines to life. I cant wait to get it back. That smoke output is so thick and realistic...Did the smoke alarm get set off? lol. Best one yet!

To replace broken plastic gear in main axle visit this webpage northwestshortline .
they sell this gear made of another plastic stronger and only costs $12.95

Great video. for all those like me that their gear broke, I just ordered from Norwest Sortline. part # 2226-6 at $12.00

rayman,
the most attractive thing about the model is their chassis are well detailed,
including the equalizers (none working?). and also, the rods. they look 3D instead of stamped steel flopping around.
as far as to replace the gear with off the shelf metal one, dat maybe hard.
they may not be using a standard gear set. Chicago Gears comes to mind
but perhaps ours are too small?
thx
5utube12 7 months ago
hi rayman,
thx 4 ur reply. if they use nylon gears instead of plastic (if they didn't want to
pay for machining brass or steel) for the gears, it would have worked out.
yes, i agree. the 1:20.3 model has a beautiful body. i was offered to buy one
used with a broken gear for ~$100. didn't buy. figured NWSL job would be $100
more + 3 hr job. Also had bent tender chassis. if i c another one, i'll b tempted again. Enjoyed ur video! Thx!

can't simulate this sound quality with HO sized speakers. can't simulate realistic
spoke puffs either in HO sized fan blower nor can see the physical details in HO. 1:20.3 is big!
5utube12 7 months ago
i heard that this bachmann 2-8-0 of 1:20.3 scale has a bad gearbox and well known.
did u have to replace it? if yes, what did u replace it with? some says NWSL's
but which unit?
amazed at the smoke and sound functions. but equally amazing is that
the slow acceleration, so realistic.
