wow Richard Berry has done a wonderful job at writing excellent songs such as this and "Louie Louie" in the 50's, while bands decades later did covers of his songs.
I have been searching all over for a song with the same title. It's a slower, more bluesy song, sounds a little like Jimmy Reed. Can't find it anywhere. Anyone got any suggestions?
@matthound I have heard those - they're covers of Richard Berry. The song I'm looking for is an entirely different one, an original song with the same title. Thanks anyway. :)
Man you must be born yesterday! Really? the Black Keys made the song relevant? Why the hell did you think THEY covered it ?? They are a neo-garage band and the Sonics taught them what was relevant in that regard! Thus, if they had one to cover, why not cover that one!?!
I met Richard Berry in 1987 when he was playing in Toronto and I requested this classic, which wasn’t on his regular play list. He seemed genuinely surprised by the request, and politely obliged me. It was a great moment for me.
I don't know why people are comparing Richard Berry's version of this song to the INTERPRETATION of the Sonics and the Black Keys. Richard Berry wrote and recorded this song as his imagination moved him in 1959. Richard Berry's version is not even the same genre as the Sonics and the Black Keys, not to mention the span between the time periods. The only real sameness is the melody and the lyrics. So, it's futile, silly even, to compare the latter versions to this one.
@YouAre256ColoursToo Nah man, Dan Auerbach is a better songwriter and guitarist and Patrick Carney is a better drummer. When you have a guitarist compared to RL Burnside + a drummer compared to John Bonham, you will have a better band than the Sonics.
@wick2107 one of the more hilarious comments i've read on youtube. bring that bullshit into a record store/around someone with actual knowledge of music history and you'll be laughed at. the sonics are the band that many look at as the true founders of punk rock. one of the hardest-hitting drummers in history. the black keys wouldn't have ever heard of this song if it weren't for the sonics. it's likely that the black keys wouldn't exist if it weren't for the sonics.
@YouAre256ColoursToo Yeah and the Sonics wouldn't exist without Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix would be worse than John Lee Hooker. It is not like the Sonics just decided to come up with their music without any influences. Your philosophy would basically just trace back music to the first musician and that musician would be the best ever. Knowledge of music history has nothing to do with it. I like The Sonics and The Black Keys. The Black Keys are just better in my opinion.
@YouAre256ColoursToo However the Sonics do not contribute too much to the Black Keys style. You would have to look at R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, and Captain Beefheart to find the musicians that shaped their style.
Thanks Snapcracklepop54! I love this song! Remember it from '60. Used to listen to it Lucky 1310 - KDIA when I was 15 years old living on the San Francisco Peninsula. I've been looking for this original version for quite some time. Sounds great!
This R&B Doo Wop version was the original which came out in 1960 by Richard Berry and the Pharoahs whom also did the original version of Louie Louie, which was also done by the Kingmen later in the 60's, while the garage rocker version of this tune came out in 1965 by the Sonics, both versions which came out during two distinctly separate eras.
@john55fan Bill Kirchen (of Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen) also did a VERY credible version. BUT, sorry Bill, the original,,,what can I say!?!
haha awesome, I was wondering who originally wrote this song. It has certainly been changed over the years. Check out the black keys version for a real trip.
awesome, for me no doubt, the sonics made the best cover ever

The evolution of music can be quite amazing. Except that which has led to lil' wayne and Justin Beiber of course.
