You know what, get over the Gould comparisons. First off, he plays the music beautifully. Did the music die with Gould? Is Gould the last word on everything? Give it a rest. That's like saying nobody should ever play Hamlet because "so and so" did it best. Ridiculous.
if he was copy of something or even a reflexion he wouldnt have got the ECHO or got on Medici.tv...........not the mention other concerts.......he is different, he is something that should have happendes long before, but let us be happy that it happened anyways........just to mention, there are very few people that understand and are able to talk about music and pieces in such detailed manner........we should leran from him
@unknownPLfan In my personal opinion, I believe that the pinnacle of the Romantic era is Bach's music. He is so ahead of his time that I feel that the pinnacle of Modern music is also written by Bach himself. This partita alone is a wonder. The Tocatta is so romantic and yet the Gigue is so modern. And all this, is achieved through counterpoint, in which no one has even come anywhere this sophisticated. It is mathematical, romantic and abstract all in one composition. It is beyond genius.
@jayliew1 this is one of the most correct and deep comments that i have read in YouTube. I am so used in reading pure crap that this truly blows my mind ! You are absolutely right ! Could't agree more.

From this short excerpt, it seems to me that this young man and Glenn Gould are at opposite ends of the interpretative spectrum of Bach, even though both their interpretations are equally valid. Comparison is absurd. Fray's approach is incredibly sensitive, expressive, yet not at all sentimental. Gould is technical, ingenious, fascinating, and quite inimitable - think of Friedrich Gulda's ghasty recording of the 48!. Yet, in his way, Gould is just as moving as Fray. THAT is the essence of Bach!
@metteholm75 I'll respond to this, too. Likenesses between Fray and Gould: self-conducting, humming and singing along, low chair with a back, posture while playing, antics. Fray could get an Oscar for his impersonation of Gould. It's unfortunate.
I happened to watch young M. Fray on tv - a French channel called Mezzo. I like his music and the way he plays it. As simple as that. Poul Bjerrum, Denmark
I so agree with this earlier comment from ElenaLondon777 (1 month ago). David Fray's playing is giving me goose bumps...like Glen Gould's playing does.

Wow, I am so used to hearing Bach on harpsichord (which is played so differently) that I can't believe this is a Bach piece, it sounds really romantic. I usually don't like Bach on piano but this is a great interpretation.

@camilocuesta He stated in an interview that Gould is not one of his influences. One can also look at the music he has chosen to record and see they are vastly different in choices of repertoire, underlining the fact that Fray is not a Gould clone in anyway. I definitely agree with your statement about their playing of Bach.
It's a good comment, though somewhat incomplete so I'll add onto it. I feel the pianist here has not captured the intense feelings of torment (maybe a better word than angst) that infuse the partita with incredible power. However, this is just one type of emotion and I feel he has captured many of the other emotions and plays beautifully. I believe Bach was made to be sung and played from the heart, regardless of style (romantic, baroque, contemporary, etc.).

Un jeune homme très talentueux. Pourquoi s'assied-il devant le piano comme un vieil homme, le dos voûté ? Comme c'est agaçant ! Est-ce qu'il imite Glenn Gould, peut-être ?

There is no need for another Gould. G. Gould is one and only, every attempt to copy he's style and interpretation is failure. This is absurd !
Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

Sometimes two people, two tempers, two ways of experiencing, and in this case two musicians, are very alike, - coincidentally.
metteholm75 2 years ago
Gould and Fray are not alike. Gould is direct and dry, and treated the piano like a harpsichord
