Red West is of course the original singer. But this song is not the first recording. It is a demo tape made by Red for Elvis in 1966.

Red wrote and recorded the song in 1965 on his own label. I put a video on my channel with the 1965 version and an excerpt from the interview (1994) in which he denies that Elvis sings in the song. The CD came out in 1993.

Red wrote and Elvis sang such a hauntinglyeautiful song that has become my favorite Christmas song. We - 3C Cowboy Fellowship band (I play bass) - did this song this year.
