You don't wanna know how stinky tofu really is made. They ferment tofu with not only with urine but also manure glazed with pesticide to prevent maggots.

Thank you for settling that for me. I'm in Taiwan right now, and I came close to buying natto and taking it with me to a stinky tofu vendor for a comparison. Now I don't have to!! Haha. Yuck. :/ I usually have to hold my breath when I walk by a stinky tofu stand. So gross.

I'm kinda curious as to the horrorific things they do in China, and if they do the same in Taiwan. . . Especially at the stands that run when the cops come. =_=

I heard some pretty messed up thing that happen in certain parts of China still. Like, maybe if you go to a rural place in inner China, their stinky tofu might still use the original ingredient: horse piss. >_<

I like natto :) I had two of my coworkers try natto and they were grossed out haha. Never had stinky tofu... Not sure I want to after watching your video lol

@yuichituba That's funny. Must have made the room smell like natto when you put it out for a snack. Got the opposite with my coworkers and they are white too heh. My boss wouldn't even try it :( . But I'm white and I like natto and actually so does my mom when I made her try it. I guess it just depends on the persons taste and how you make it too. When I first got it the smell was @_@ ugh. But you get use to it.

Yes, I'll take natto anytime... I tried stinky tofu once, and that was it. You're definitely right - the after taste of the stinky tofu and when you burp after the meal gets you. :(

Yeah, it took me 20 years to like Natto and prolly take another 20 years to like Stinky Tofu.. Natto is much less smelly comparing to stinky tofu, HOWEVER, I heard Natto being heated up like fried makes very strong smell all over the kitchen.

I also understand natto is not universally popular in Japan, is this true? Also it's more popular in the kanto area than in the Kansai area?

haha for reals? Dang man. Ya, natto isn't liked by every Japanese, but I think it's half and half. I googled 関西人　納豆 and the first link talked about it. It says that they do sell natto in Kansai groceries but they don't have it as much as Kanto stores do.

Also a stinky (but nice) ingredient you can buy here in Holland is Trassi Udang, an Indonesian condiment made of compressed dried shrimp. Use with caution.
