WTF is up with the music starting at 2:33? The music is notated as an arpeggio, not a rasgueado. A guitarist of this caliber shouldn't be screwing around with the score. BAD idea russell.
@artsong1 Seems like he just flew into that passage. I have heard one other guitarist do it that way, and it is a great effect if used properly. Plus the score is crazy in that part, depending on what version you have.
@artsong1 Oh dear. Thats an awfully misguided statement. A guitarist of this caliber has the liberty to do whatever he wants with the score, as he knows exactly what he's doing and why. There are 3 versions of the score anyway (one that I can't stand, rewritten by Pepe). I'm learning it at the moment and the notation is very different between each of them.it hurts my head trying to choose which to follow. But yeah, I don't personally agree with the rasquerado, but that doesn't make it a bad idea!

It's a Gilbert --- that's why he sounded soooooo much better back then. I always laugh when people rave about how he sounds with a Damman double-top or how John Williams sounds with a Smallman or countless other pro guitarists with their Thomas Humphrey guitars --- all loud, piano-like sustain guitars with atrocious sound quality!
I have to agree. I admire Russell's playing very much, but I prefer his older recordings. I heard him live playing on Gilbert - beautiful, sweet and rich sound. And this performance is great. Did he ever record this piece?
wow ive never seen russell making a mistake, were all humans and even the greatest make mistakes! Amazing video though I was exited to see Russell play invocacion y danza.
David Russell is one of the finest classical guitarists ever. So musical yet so clean. However, he is human. He has spoken about how he still gets quite nervous before recitals. When I saw him in Seattle he had a rather obvious stumble in his opening piece. Within 5 minutes he completely loosened up and played an epic program.
This is a nice interpretation of Invocation and Dance. But Russell's real talents are shown when he plays more "conventional" music. His Torroba is exquisite.
With all respect to David Russel ..Antigoni Goni is indeed so intense , musical , epic
don't forget her Koyunbaba .
In my opnion the GFAcompetition has revealed many superb players like Jason Vieaux and Antigoni .A pity there is only one vid of another favourite player : Norbert Kraft a, dazzling virtuoso with so much passion in his playing .
Rodrigo, Invocation and Dance. Shame about the terrible audio quality. Seems to me quite a few of these videos may be here without the permission of the players, so poor they are.
i think he's playing on a john gilbert guitar here. another killer performance, and a great example for all aspiring guitarists of how it should be done.
No he was already a very well known professional and released his famous bach-Haendel Scarlatti album on that year. he was in the competition circuit inthe seventies.
David's tremolo always makes me so happy
