  • This is such an awesome tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is a compilation of artists from different genres, backgrounds, & cultures. It is symbolic of the unity of a world filled with all these differences 2 come on one accord 4 the common good of all of mankind - God's creations. I purposely play this song as if it is new all over again every year. Thanks everyone! Many that participated have gone & others have endured some real hardships, but God is able to make all grace abound to u!

  • man yall don't understand this was the first song of it's kind, with hip hop and r&b stars honoring dr. king... we was very proud of this... you just don't know if you wasnt there or couldn't relate. At that time television was still mostly white and dr. king holiday was very new, not even observed in all states yet. So I am still happy to review this moment in history... Let the hero shine!....

  • hmmm...it's nice to see a incredibly talented Whitney Houston, before she went down the path of drug addiction....memories....

  • Even though this song includes the great El DeBarge and Whitney Houston, It still does NOT hold a candle to USA For Africa's "We Are The World". The best part of this song is from 2:03 - 2:23.

  • they sure do!!!!! they did back in da day thought that is where I saw it originally 25 years ago I was in the Fifth grade when this song was out!!!!!!!

  • Love Whitney of course! To the jerk who said something about her not being there maybe her schedule was tied up she was the shit back then!!! Bobby was doing his thing by then and put out of NE.

  • Amen!!! What matters is that regardless of where WH was, she appeared in the video.

  • @Ravenluc Exactly! I can't stand haters. Clearly she was the star too of the video. LOL and that fool just had to spread hate on MLK day. Some folks will never get the message!!!

  • Wow I was 8 yrs old, in the 3rd grade, I remember them playing it on the readio

  • I was in the fifth grade we are telling our age. this video was made 25 years ago.

  • still a good song till this day

  • yes!!!!

  • Great respect and admiration For DR. King and to all our Great Legendary Dignitarians. To all who contributed to the Civil Rights movement and who made sacrifices for the privileges/rights we're experiencing today . Have come a long way as a people inspite of the odds. I'm proud of my AFRICAN-AMERICAN history. This1986 tribute to MLK is Timeless. And a song you CANNOT grow out of.

  • you are right. for those who don't know aretha franklin and her father rev c.l franklin

contributed to the civil rights movement.

also, ebony and jet magazine contributed to the movement also.............

  • This is a BEAUTIFUL song for a BEAUTIFUL man! The world is a better place because of Dr. King. It is a shame that he wasn't allowed to live long enough to see the rewards the WE ALL reap because of his sacrifices!

  • Martin Luther King would be proud of the many accomplishments of today. He paved the way for us and I am greatly appreciated. R.I.P and I will never take for granted how hard you and other faught to get us where we are today.

  • A classic song that will go down in history. When you think of KING Holiday, you think of this song.

  • I was in the fifth grade when this song was done!!!!

  • I bought this as a single the first day it got released. I still have the vinyl, I treasure it!!

All proceeds of this went to make sure it became a National Holiday...

  • Comment removed

  • Whitney, 'phoneing in' her performance...she wasn't even there. TOO FUNNY!!! I saw New Edition but didn't notice Bobby. Was he outta the group by this time?

  • OMG I totally forgot about this LOL

  • Thkx for this video!! this is what I was lookin' for!

  • Whitney Houston Sings like an Angel, so high so strong, such quality, I used to think that God smiled when he heard Whitney singing.

  • Let us not forget that Dr.king would rather like to see tha KING JESUS NAME be exalted. Dr. King was one of His disciple fo sho. A great one.

  • Power to the people not institutions of evil!!!!

    MLK rip

  • Whitney definitely carried this video.....so much power in her voice!

  • thanks for posting this love it sing for a king

  • LOVE THIS SONG

  • I saw the video for the first time in 1986 ( January or February). I loved the New Edition- Menudo blend. Absolutely great song. I would suggest a remake of todays stars, but sad many of todays stars don't measure up to the talent on here. Also, many of them lack the character of caring about something else other than material possessions . Thanks for posting this video !

  • Love Whit look in this vid, she looks so Model-esque.

  • I LOVED THIS SONG !!!!

  • Its true when they say a great singer can turn an average song into masterpiece. Whitney Houston brings the song to life. Shes th greatest!

  • @jazzinc2008 Actually it was all the artists that made this song... Whitney didn't really have a part in the song other than the overdubs on the top. She did great, but I'm not going to say she MADE the song! They all did exceptional!!!

  • Whitney Houston looks just fine! :-)

  • Flava

  • great song, but can anybody tell me who that guy was at 1:43?david bowie?

  • Lol, Ronnie DeVoe of New Edition.

  • So many legends in this video!

  • What is sad is that ppl completly forgot about this video and the message.

I mean seriously ppl love to talk about the man's dreams and message, but not one of them lives it, then or now.

  • I love this song I always had and I love MLK and I always will!!!!

  • Check out Ricky Martin at 1:02

Yeah, Menudo was all over our tv on Saturday morning, remember that? LoL.

  • There is a lot of jerry curl juice in this video. I mean a lot.

  • that is funny!!!!!

  • @gugs76 LMAO :-D

  • Yeaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!

  • Have a happy Martin Luther King holiday everyone!

  • Very cool! I loved seeing Teena Marie and Stacy Lattisaw, along with New Edition and Menudo. And Whitney looked fierce. This was when pop stars actually had talent and not just circus side shows.

  • they need to play this on Bet tonight...this is a classic song

  • CLASSIC...for a KING let's celebrate

  • Man, I was 12 when this came out and was so happy to see New Edition in it. But this song is timeless! Glad I found it!

  • I pray that BET will not play the Keisha Cole marathon again this year.

I think I was the only person who was appalled that BET aired the Keisha Cole Marathon on MLK. Back in the day when BET was not owned by Whites, they would play educational, honorable type stuff all day during MLK. I remember they would always play the For a King Video. I pray they will not disrespect his legacy again.

  • I love this song! To me, this song is just as much a part of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I get chills EVERY time I hear this song.

  • this song is a tribute to martin luther king jr. who fought for stopping segregation and went through it himself. people bombed his house, threatened him, and called him names. and he was still going strong. thats a good leader right there cuz i doubt no one else could do that. thats why hes sucha important man. becuz without him maybe we'd still be different colored sides of towns, different schools, different water fountains all that. thats why he was sucha good man. then shot.....so sad to al

  • Hey!! What's that Donnie Simpson looking dude's name in this video?? Wasn't he the lead singer of Kool and the Gang?

  • His name is James "JT" Taylor and yes he sang lead for Kool and The Gang

  • Donnie Simpson was the original host of BETs video shows and a radio dj in DC

  • whitney was awesome put seeing el was the icing on my cake o my lawd thats a fine man!!!

  • Whitney Houston is at 2:13

  • @pannoni1, I wish I'd seen this post before I watched 2:12 minutes of nonsense.. I only watched because it had Whit's name attached.

  • I remember this song when I was 9 in 1986!!!!

  • Whitney Houston was so beautiful. I still can not understand to this day why she married Bobby Brown!!!!

  • Little Ricky Martin in Menudo at 1:03

  • Wouldn't it be nice if the artists today will join together and redo this or something similiar to this.

  • no.

    leave it as it is.

remakes are crummy and marketing ploys these days.

  • I remember when this first came out. AWESOME THEN, AWESOME NOW!!!! And after tonight's speech by Obama, it is even more Awesome. YES WE CAN!!!!!!!!!!

  • you can see Kurtis Blow get choked up at the end like he was about to cry. Powerful Stuff. We need to stop buying hip-hop until they realize theres more to the art then just....AMilli.

  • I forgot all about this video. This is a Beautiful tribute video for Dr. Martin Lurther King Jr. R I P. A truely great man.

A Great man of peace and love.

  • Love this song and all artists on this song

  • El Debarge is great too in this video !

  • i can't believe i found this song this is old school man i miss the old songs!

  • ATTENTION!! Don't be surprised when this video gets deleted off youtube. UMG owns this song and they act like a bunch of bitches everytime we post something up thats theirs. They are'nt posting this clip up and we have no intention of gaining profit so I don't see what the big deal is so we just gotta keep posting this up, but not give the full name to the artist.

  • my comment was that this was one of my favorate song nothing more nothing less if they took it off right now i wouldn't lose a bit of sleep and i was just surprise to find it period. its not that serious to me!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Give me a Break putting Whitney's name up there. She's so not all that.

  • She is all that> She has laid all her cards out showed the world she is human and has proved her mark in the business so that makes her all that!

  • It's a free country - you have a right to your (incorrect) opinion however the millions upon billions of Whitney Houston fans will disagree. Despite all - WHITNEY is a LEGEND!!!!

  • Then you don't need to defend her with your incorrect opinion.

  • I don't share my opinion what I said is actual and factual. True it is a free country flip the role put your feet in someone else's shoes I don't care if they are entertainers or everyday people!

  • Child Whitney IS All that & More...Model & Epic Singer....She's all that!!!

  • Whitney's outfit looked like she was in Christmas wonderland...

  • Wow! I loved this song. Thanks so much for the video. In light of what's going on in politics right now, it's so inspiring.

  • Captivating, catchy, and inspiring! Encore to King Dream Chorus and Holiday Crew!

  • Brings me back to the days of kick the can, manhunt, and freeze tag!!!!! Thank you Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for all you have done!! I know you are looking down on us and blessing us everyday!!

  • Cant forget red light green light...LOL

  • this my Jammn

  • I would like to know if anybody knows who is the white girl singing? Could it be Tina Marie? I know the rest: Whodini, Kurtis Blow, Fat boys, DMC & JMJ (no Run), James T. Taylor (Kool & the Gang) Stacie Latis, Lisa Lisa, Full Force, New Edition (no Bobby Brown), Whitney Huston, Debarge, Stephanie Mills, and Menudo (Ricky Martin). I've been looking for this song/video for years. I remember seeing this on BET in the late 80's. After that, no where to be found, until now. Thanks for posting it.

  • I believe you are referring to Teena Marie

  • its teena marie wit her sexy ass

  • If you want to call Tina a white girl! Most brothas and sistaz accepted her as one their own! Besides she dates them blk only(rick james). She's from Portugal or shall I say Portuguese Republic. Raised in NYC.

  • it only bring me chills when whitney hit the bridge she. made the song better

  • Yes she did. I said that when I was in the 5th grade back then, And I say It now! A true classic that bring tears to your eyes. And Im not a crier!
