Lol ...I find it highly ironic that its ALABAMA - the LAST place that would be under threat of a nuclear attack - is the place that has the fallout shelters.

@lost2darkness Huntsville is the ONLY city in Alabama that has an active shelter list. You can find fallout protection in newer buildings if you know what to look for in a building or a portion of a building that is to provide protection from radiation.

in 1992 Drakelow tunnels near Kidderminster UK was decomissioned and sold to a private buyer.

It's collosal Build under a sandstone hill. I've been on a tour in there and you can drive juggernauts down the tunnels.

If nukes come in, that's where I'll be heading.

Last time I talked to Kirk, approx. 2 weeks ago, he said that they (he and who else I don't know) are preparing to address congress (AGAIN!!) to promote civil defense/nuclear attack preparedness.

No, Under COG (Continuity Of Government) THEY have bunkers for themselves and families. They don't provide ANY such protection for average citizens like you and me. Any attempts to do so died with presidents Kennedy (a liberal) and Reagan (a conservative). However the fallout shelter program was put into action by JFK. Reagan wanted SDI (Star Wars). My suggestion is to build a shelter for yourself, if you can afford to do so, or find buildings with the Fallout Shelter signs on them in your area.

Even if America wasn't involved with any nations conducting a nuclear war, it would still suffer from Trans-Pacific Fallout. It happened back in 1967 after the chinese tested one of their bombs, a large cloud of radioactive materials covered most of america and the northern hemisphere, bunch of people got cancers from the irradiated idone:P

Civil Defense? Right. We are on our own! No Nuke Shelters anywhere for the public! ALL shelters were closed,no longer have any. Unless you live in the State of Alabama, they told Bill Clinton he was not taking away their shelters, they privatized the Civil D Shelters and stock supplies.

Only Government has "DUMB" shelters. I guess they are the only ones that matter...

Yet, they tell us we have a high nuke threat from terrorists now. Gov report in December said will happen by 2013. ???

Short answer: YES

Long answer:Fallout is carried by the wind so it can go to anywhere from anywhere given the right conditions. The strength of fallout and location depends on the blast type, prevailaing winds at the time, and weather.

For example ground bursts make more fallout then airbursts (which may not make fallout at all). Rain would make the fallout hit the ground faster in the form of black rain (like at Hiroshima). The material uses will also affect the strength of the fallout.
