as an Austrian train enthusiast who long ago fell in love with Trieste, Piran, Porec, and being interested in the difficult history (which in fact is much of Europe's history on a small scale),
I find these tracks of the Parenzana with all those curves and bridges so symbolic .. it is still one region, isn't it. Only folk from outside (including us Austrians) tried to introduce hegemonies.
if i was in charge i would put what you just said as another condition for joining the EU, but i am not :-) on the other hand the Slovenians would do all to stop this just like they refused to build those 10 kilometers of the expressway from Rupa (Rijeka) to Italian border (Basovizza) The Italians and Croatians already agreed on this and it would have been done by now, but the Slovenians don't really like people storming through their "big" country without stopping and spending money elsewhere

Wonderful. Hope that when Croatia will become part of EU the 3 governments will rebuilt it: it could be an extraordinary tourist railway.
