They were allowed to hand check back then, they were more lenient on defensive penalties, and fouls weren't being called every play. Watch Jordan play versus the Pistons. They were called the Bad Boys for a reason. There are a few good defensive teams now, but defense was a lot better back then. Think Hakeem, Shaq, Malone, etc.
