what a shame that the Italian director of the Sanremo show didn't pay attention to the rehearsals - he'd have known e'd better stay on GJ's close-up at the end of the song for the coup de théatre (her wig is taken off and she's carried away). Instead he favoured the traditional wide shot, depriving the TV audience (and the song) of its ending. What an idiot.
GJ is iconic and theatrical, a joy to behold, a unique talent.
Yes, there is a male version. Someone was recently asking me personally about it. She comes out dressed as a man, very similar to Annie Lennox doing her male version of Sweet Dreams from the awards show in the early 80's. "Male Grace" has a cigarette, and even a somewhat shave shadow...at the end, she fakes a collapse as she does in this one.
She does both performances for a reason, but i"ll leave that a secret as to why, for now. : )
aw you are keeping the suspense Mathew... that's exciting! How do you hold all of this information anyway? I just cant stop listening to this performance over and over again, i think its exquisite! And im sad that the male version disappeared from youtube... do you know where we could source it from by chance? Her voice is so full, so warm and sensitive in this piece.
Triphop wrote 7 months ago where is the male version she did of that song? That used to be on youtube and its not there now! Grace turned up with a fake moustache and does it in her butchest style, that was very beautiful too... anyone help?
I prefer the 'male version' of this song, but this is still a great performance from a unique artist. If you like this, have a look at Giardini di Marzo too. It's Grace at her live best.
It's a cover of the Renato Zero song Spalle al Muro. You're right, he does have a lot of classical influence in his music, but I daresay you'd be surprised at him.
Grace Jones is a woman...she was born in Jamaica. She's a contralto (in between Tenor and Mezzo-Soprano). This makes her unique since it's pretty rare. In fact, in high school there was a girl in the tenor section of our choir and I haven't seen that since. And that was 10 years ago!
Ms. Grace Jones is inimitable. She inspired me when I was a teen, I love her still. This woman is a star and an icon, not those vapid little caricatures like Britney, Lindsay and Paris.
there was so much ado about this performance in Italy those days in 1991. I found her amazing and fascinating. the song in italian is so charming and moving; she OF COURSE did not take it seriously, still did a very good job.
GRACE jONES HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE THE 70'S AS A SINGER. THEY HAVE TORN THIS POOR WOMAN UP SINCE THEN. "I NEED A MAN, THATS THE TROUBLE, DO OR DIE" ECT. THEY CALLED HER UGLY BUT AS YOU CAN SEE HERE UGLY SHE IS NOT. NO TALENT, WRONG AGAIN! WHY IS IT THAT JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE IS NOT LIKE THE REST OF THE NORM THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO CUT THEM DOWN? HEY GRACE YOUR THE B0MB! I STILL LISTEN TO ALL YOUR MUSIC AND AS A MODEL YOU WERE THE TOP!!! THANKS FOR ENTERTAING ME FOR SO MANY YEARS!
I saw a short clip with who I think is Grace Jones a few years ago. She was dressed all in white and was singing on stage during a fashion show. Models were coming and going and she was in the middle singing her heart out. I was blown away and have never forgotten it. If anyone knows what I am talking about please contact me I would love to see that video again.
If a Chinese person is born in London, you'd be fool to say, 'calling them Chinese is a stretch'!!! would u still say that? Your heritage is who you are, no matter where you're born. It dictates what you look like, what your values are and everything! Even though I do speak and live like a Brit, I know that I'm Jamaican. My grandparents came from there, but I still look like and have the tendencies of a Jamaican.
i would not judge someone no matter what .we are in this world togheder and we should get along and be gething ready to welcome our aliens from other planets to help us save our world and live in peace g what we are in this world thogheter and we are human or are we aliens
You see where Naomi Campbell snatched her signature style from...the female ingenue of Grace Jones/she is stunning in femme persona..love this avant garde performance...bravo diva!
if you want to heat grace jones sing loud and low, (and high) check out her 2006 rendition of la vie en rose at the louis vuitton show in japan. itsa on you tube on the second page of grace jones videos.
It's just like clowns in a circus. They can play the trompet perfectly...but make jokes with it. Grace did the same with her talented voice... She can sing! It's sad to see she made such a fuzz with her career, bad choices of producers etc... her highlight was during the Compass Point sessions.
Perhaps I am just dramatic by nature...but I found this beautiful. The words are haunting. Wether or not Grace Jones takes the performance seriously or not--is open to observation, but the vocals are very, very good for the lyrics. I hope this stays on here forever!
This is a wonderful italian song, it belongs to a great italian singer, Renato Zero. This video was taken from the italian Sanremo Festival (1991) and Renato Zero was just one of the entries, singing it in italian (in fact the real song's title is "Spalle al muro") :)
I didn't see the ending until now! Ha, Boy George ripped her wig right off. You can clearly see that Grace is not taking this performance seriously. xD
The song is about a life in still life. Imagine her as a mannequin (which, incidentally, means "model" in several Romance languages). The guy's not a BG lookalike; he's a clown. San Remo, remember. Also, listen to the original "Slave to the Rhythm" album. Miss Jones is all about l'image... and f*cking with it. It's both serious and a joke. Come on, folks, pull out your humor, whimsy and artsy fartsy-ness. Roll wit it.
its ironic, you have to look at the last seconds when the drag queen strips her wig and carries her out...

Someone asked me if I'm going to life the secret of the male version? What secret??? She performs the song twice, once as a man, once as a woman.
Not to quote a famous artist, but....hehe "No Secrets"....
