Brent was awesome. The day he died I knew my trip was over and I only saw a few more shows after that. That said I have been truly enjoying Furthur lately.
@rudyj2 You are so right. It was the beginning of the end. IMO the 80's, especially the latter years were the golden age of GD. Brent was the real deal on the ivories, Jerry was at the top of his game, the band was the tightest it had ever been. The good old days. Thanks for sharing
In the vids with Brent you could see the respect and admiration in his eyes when he looks at Jerry =) AMAZING SHOWS and wish I could've been to at least one but I got as far as the parking lot at Soldiers Field (I want to say either 92' or 93') and that was just an epic party I will never forget! RIP JERRY AND BRENT =)
Brent was the best keyboardist they ever had and his presence was definitely missed in the last years. He gave Jerry the spark of inspiration over and over and truly created some of the most magical music of their entire performing career. RIP Brent. That said, Easy To Love You, Far From Me, Tons of Steel are some of the most abysmal pieces of crap I've ever had the displeasure of subjecting my ears to. He had a taste for bad 80s pop sadly.
Also, I'd take Donna over Brent's singing any day...
@Kefka0630 Best keyboardist? YES. And come on, Tons of Steel and Blow Away are great tunes. I also like Donna's voice, as well as Vince and Brent. You say bad 80's pop I say he had a thing for songs that laid his personal life out for us to see and relate to. Either about his daughter or his relationship with his wife. He was a friend of mine....
@otisflywheel420 Blow Away is great, I will give you that. The passion put into that song really blows me away (pun intended). As for Donna, I was referring to '72-74 Donna where her vocals weren't bad in so far as her voice was bad, but she was completely off key 90% of the time. Brent's singing definitely grew on me though. When I first heard him singing I thought it was a cat being stepped on or something. Not tryin to ruffle feathers! It's all the dead to me. The music is love, spread it :)
Wow what an unexpectedly great performance! Brent brought a lot of energy and played off of Jerry very well, as well as Jerry played off of Brent! This is a stellar performance!
Sorry to you Brent fans, I'll take Hornsby over Brent anytime. Vince was also better in my mind. Brent's voice was like chalk on a black-board. I'll never understand people who say he was a great vocalist, I'd always go for a walk when Brent started singing or howling. I did like Brent's playing though... no doubt!

These shows were so much fun! '89 was all rain & mud except DURING the shows! I loved it though b/c evaeryone in the lawn even was up & dancin =-) RIP BRENT!!
I was actually at a couple of these shows in the Summer of '89. I had just graduated from High School, and was attending my Aunt's wedding in Chicago. I drove East Troy from Milwaukee for the first show (I was in Milwaukee visiting a family friend with my brother and mother), and then I was driven to another show a couple nights later by a part owner of the Chicago Bulls (another family friend). Brings back a lot of memories. :)
Oh boy, LTGTR, that was killer, love that song. The back drop looked familiar to me and then I spotted the venue and the year and remembered I was there! I don't remember which of the 3 or 4 nights it was, maybe opening night??? Either way, it was a great time and well missed. Thanks to who ever video taped it, attended and everyone who loves GD. Long live the music. Peace.
mydland was feeling this song! gives me goosebumps everytime i hear it! "If it takes all night, if it takes all day, If it takes all fuckin day long, now c'mon, we gonna do it now, we gonna do it awwwwwwwwww!"
Alpine is a ski hill..and a music venue, golf course and resort. but, not to kill bleelacs buzz....the ski hill is behind the stage..this is the theatre which could be easily mistaken as as ski hill with enough of the "right stuff"... Still by far the best large outdoor venue to see a show from red rocks to the venues on the east coast..better than deer creek in my opinion..

Alpine Valley is a ski run,so we were all out on the grass and hill since it was summer.people were dancing up in the air on the ski lifts.what a great day
1986 Alpine was my first show @ Alipne Valley, and was super tight show. Even the state cops were still cool then...sigh...people knew how to have fun and behave. Ask anyone at the Rosemont shows in 1989 how embarrassed I felt when they gave out flyers begging people to grow up and figure out how to act after acting like feral pigs about the grounds. my last show after that. got out of hand. RIP Jerry.
This is awesome!......Was at the Cap center when they first covered this song...I really miss Brent and Jerry..Long live THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mydland ,"If it takes all fuckin night long" What an amazing voice he had, just wish he wasn't such a bad alchoholic and treated himself a little better, Jerry as well. Miss You Brent & Jerry. Great Year 89 Though.
There's a couple of versions of this song that absolutely SUCK, but this is not one of them If you borrow someone's guitar, start playing this song You don't look like some loser playing a dumb song on someone else's guitar and you can really get everybody behind you with this one.
Mydland ,"If it takes all fuckin night long" What an amazing voice he had, just wish he wasn't such a bad alchoholic and treated himself a little better, Jerry as well. Miss You Brent & Jerry. Great Year 89 Though.
So awesome but the sudden cut at the end while the jam is still going strong is painful! Always listening to the Grateful Dead and remembering being at shows, I am reminded of the words of Camille Saint-Saens apropos of Franz Liszt: "The memory of having heard him play consoles me for no longer being young."
Bobby did lots of shorts in the later shows, hahaha....must of thought he was in so cal most of the time huh?? really miss the shows and the togetherness we had!!
Godbless the Brent years. Dude had some pipes and fingers to spare. Iwish I had been old enough to enjoy 65-95 but only did not land on earth until 66. Those late 80's shows were good. People tell me I was luck to have seen as many shows (125-150) as I have so maybe I should be more thankful. Bless you Brent,Keith, and Vince. Most of all Pig and Jerry you were the start and the heart.
I'm so GRATEFUL for the few precious videos that we have - I think I miss the Mydland days the most - I was finally old enough to appreciate what we had I just wasn't able to comprehend that we wouldn't have it forever :(
Wow this Alpine Valley 89 show is quite the performance. One of the best of the 80's from what i can tell. Mydland clearly is the most gifted keyboard / vocalist / songwriter to have played with the band
@TNAisWWE I don't know man I love the Pig Pen years, changed the band for sure, but I don't know if they were better. Love both of them for different reasons.
@zendishwasher2 how pigpen was a mediocre keyboardist at best when he was play9ing..he was more of a presence...but he wanted a blues band and jerry took the band from him and changed it into what we love...the old pig was better line is a just a way for you old washed up hgippie to sound cool but not from a musicial point of view
i remember camping 4 nights there, right close to the entrance...made for some good tent parties after the show...i must say the valley was my fav place to watch jerry and the boys...god i miss those days...seemed like no matter what was going on, you could always look foward to the next tour...i used to think id be seeing jerry rolled out in a wheel chair to play, and id be in one also with my grandkids lol... miss you Jerry
This opener sends a chill down my spine every time I hear the opening notes
It is unlikely we'll ever see magic in our lifetime like this again
Got my ticket for Cinco De Mayo at the venue formerly known as the Rosemont Horizon and hoping for the best, but nonetheless will have a great time seeing the boys together again!!
Hey- Thanks for the video. It's been so long now since Jerry passed. Nice to see the band having fun. I think they played some of their best shows in '89. The Greek shows come to mind, one night they played a "Foolish Heart" encore. That was a great show, worth finding a copy of.
After Brent left us, well, it was just different. Good and bad. The new live sound system was amazing as was J's new guitar. Incredible live sound.
Man you really are a dick. does it matter how many drummers there are? Its what we like. Thats why they were around for 30 YEARS! Fuck one armed drummers or shit, and if you dont like them then WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU WATCHING IT ON HERE??
Man you dnt need to get all offensive. Musicc is all an opinin, in my opinion the Dead were and will forever be the most amazing and magical live band. I never had the pleasure to see them with Jerry but I have seen the newer stuff and Im a dead head. The sounds radiating from their music just made you get lost in the moment and it was for certain pople not everyone. But Then people have to become all nasty twoards deadheads for no reason w have our ow opinions. And if they were shit yd u go?
One of my top 5 favorite all time performances by the Dead (this song). I've seen 20+ shows at Alpine, but never The Dead (only "The OtherOnes"). This woulda been such an awesome 1st set opener!
formulatwo3, or mugato? take the balls out ur ass, and quit raving your sissy-faggot fashion opinion to ppl.
admit it, you just don'[t know what you're talking about. its cool, we know. we understand ppl like you. its not your fault you're so gay, its the way your mommy and daddy raised you. or whatever they did... GO HEADS!!!!
This opener is actually called just "Good Times." It was written and performed originally by the late Sam Cooke. Cook took it to number 11 on the pop charts in June, 1964.
The songs made it into the rock idiom when the Rolling Stones covered it in 1965 on their "Out of Our Heads" album as a tribute to Cooke, who had been recently murdered.
A quick search through one of the many Dead sites should reveal if it's on Dick's Picks.
formula1two3: you are soo out of your league with your last comment. i can only imagine to guess what you listen too...the grateful dead is and will always be the the finest touring act EVER!!! you suck balls, and you offer nothing but negative mindless critisizm. comment about stuff you know about, like fashion. faggot.

Bobby's shorts? A different fashion era.

Man you really are a dick. does it matter how many drummers there are? Its what we like. Thats why they were around for 30 YEARS! Fuck one armed drummers or shit, and if you dont like them then WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU WATCHING IT ON HERE??
deadheadwookie17 3 years ago
Man you dnt need to get all offensive. Musicc is all an opinin, in my opinion the Dead were and will forever be the most amazing and magical live band. I never had the pleasure to see them with Jerry but I have seen the newer stuff and Im a dead head. The sounds radiating from their music just made you get lost in the moment and it was for certain pople not everyone. But Then people have to become all nasty twoards deadheads for no reason w have our ow opinions. And if they were shit yd u go?
deadheadwookie17 3 years ago
One of my top 5 favorite all time performances by the Dead (this song). I've seen 20+ shows at Alpine, but never The Dead (only "The OtherOnes"). This woulda been such an awesome 1st set opener!
Thanks for posting.

formulatwo3, or mugato? take the balls out ur ass, and quit raving your sissy-faggot fashion opinion to ppl.
admit it, you just don'[t know what you're talking about. its cool, we know. we understand ppl like you. its not your fault you're so gay, its the way your mommy and daddy raised you. or whatever they did... GO HEADS!!!!

This obviously must your first time listening to the dead, to make a statement as stupid as that.

I'm pretty sure Louis Jordan wrote the tune in the 1940's.

Does anybody know if you can this tune on a Dicks Pick or any boot out there? I am getting the kids into this stuff and they really like this one.
