There is a recording which I'm very thrilled by entitled (Ghost) Rider In The Sky by Dan Bau Vietnam on a wonderful cd release on the Trikont label. I did not realise that Dan Bau was the name of the instrument being played as the artist takes this as part of his name as well. This was a great introduction to what appears to be a very lucid instructional series.
hey I was wondering what you tune your dan bau to, C? also what notes are labeled on your dan bau going from the end of the string to the spout, Low C to what?. thanks a lot this would be very helpful

Hello, I'm from the United States. How hard do you think it is to play this musical instrument or to master it. I have very good intonation of pitch because I play the French Horn.
First of all, it's quite hard to hit a a note. Lifting the hand too soon will just lead to the note, you tuned the Dan Bau; lifting the hand too late will cause a dull sound.
Then you have to get the feeling to move that stick. The slightest movement will cause a different tone.
I'd say it's quite hard to learn, but harder to master.
I hope I didn't discourage you. I really recommend playing the Dan Bau. You'll get a completely new feeling to music.
does anyone know what he uses to pluck the string with? my uncle in vietnam had to shave down a chopstick, and it doesnt sound as good as w/e he is using
I have purchased a mono chord instrument about five years ago during my tour in Vietnam. Since then I have been searching for someone or material in Singapore on how to play this instrument. In fact I have been search the web sites but no one seem to know anything about mono chord or dan bau a few years back. I am glad Duc Thanh had posted this self learning video in the YouTube.
