ha ha...yeah....if you haven't already, you oughta check out the HD re-review I did of the Medeli drum kit. I wish I could link it here, but they don't allow for links in the comment section. You can find it from my main page though...
That's really uncalled for, but I've ALREADY done another review were I spoke less & played the drums more. If nothing else, you don't have to watch, but if you decide to watch (since I'm doing these for the benefit of people like you who want more information...for free) the least you could do is be polite. But I guess it's par for the course with this generation.
If you want to watch the one where I talk less (in HD) search for Medeli Drum kit review.
Thanks...and thanks for watching! I have gotten much better now that I have been playing more frequently and gotten back into the swing of things. I redid this review in HD because I got a few comment that I talked too much and didn't drum enough (plus I wanted to show this kit in HD). If I get my second set of business loans, I'll be selling OSP 502 drums (same as these) and the DKX-508 (very nice).
Yup...that;s why I labeled it as such...I'm going to be dealing Medeli in (hopefully) a few weeks...Medeli has a bunch more models to choose from, plus each model has MIDI In AND Out...so upgrading is A LOT easier.
If you haven't watched it already, you can check out my Medeli Review 2 (it's in HD).
@CheapGearGuy Hey, cool video! I have a question... I have an acoustic drum (my 1st drum) but it isn't so good, even for begginers, its sound it's weird, so I am thinking about buying a E-Drum. I saw at MusicStore's site and saw this drum and I am thinking about buying it, after I sell my drumset.... What do you think? Does your E-Drum sound like an acoustic drum? Cause I don't want to buy it if it hasn't a natural sound.... Thanks
Actually, if you watch this video and my other one (Medeli Review 2), you can see what these drums sound like. I did a full review where you can see and hear these drums...but to answer your question, NO, these don't sound like REAL drums. No E-drums do. You can make them sound real by adding BFD or Superior Drummer.
@CheapGearGuy Do you think I better not sell my Acoustic Drum? 'Cause it's really very loud (I am refering to my actual drum) By the way, are these programs you mentioned for free?
I can't advise you on what you should do. It is up to you. I prefer my e-drums. With BFD & Superior Drummer, I can have 20-30 professionally mic-ed drumsets but I only have to own 1 drumset. They are NOT free programs. You can google them.
I dont know what you are trying to do or what sound you are trying to achieve, so it is impossible for me to give you advice. Even if I knew, your style of music and my style of music are totally different. It is a choice YOU must make.
The store is already happening. EquinoxInstruments is up (not 100%...needs the reviews I'm doing this weekend), & CheapGearGuy is up, but haven't opened the doors yet. Just got approval to be an FXPansion dealer (BFD2) & in July Medeli should be launching in the US. I want to package BFDEco WITH these drums for free! Have you watched the Medeli Drum Review 2? I think it's better than this one (HD).
I don't know for sure prices, but hopefully cheaper than Simmons!
Thanks! You oughta check out the new review I did of these.
I'm going to do a "How To..." about connecting MIDI drums up and triggering and what not. I made this video shortly after getting those drums...and I hadn't played drums in like 10 years...I've really been practicing hard to get back into playing condition.
Anyways...thanks for watching...if you're interested in one of these kits, I should be dealing them in about a month or so. Hope you'll check out my store!
I'm grooving on it, right now...when I upgrade to the DD508dx, maybe, but being over 3 years old, I would worry about selling you this kit for that much...HOWEVER, as I said, I will be a Medeli dealer and can probably get you this kit (BRAND NEW) for about $350. Don't quote me on that, but I will do my best to keep the prices LOW. Plus I'm working on trying to throw in a free copy of BFD ECO when people purchase Medeli drums from me!
Cause I love my gloves...and I have a HORRIBLE problem with dropping the sticks! Not so much anymore, but I was getting back into drumming after 14 years! I had problems with keeping the sticks in my hands back in the day..but more importantly than any other reason, I LOVE MY GLOVES! :)
When it comes to making electronic music,Is it better to buy an electronic drum kit or a drum machine? I can play the drums, but I'm kinda on a budget and I wanna connect whatever I get to my laptop. I'm also not sure if I wanna learn how to use a drum machine. Any Idea?
Which is better? Can't really say. It's all about choice. Programming drum beats allows me to "play beyond my abilities", while banging it out allows me to play with more emotion. The IDEAL thing would be to get yourself a kit (like the 502) and a program like BFD or Fruity Loops. Both programs allow you to record your MIDI into patterns that you can then tweak (like when I'm weak on double bass, it can tighten things up).
Budget is the king. He orders everything else. Fruity Loops is like $100 & this kit is like $300-$400. A good drum machine is about $150-$300, so, yeah. You gotta do what's good for you! I can say that I will be selling these kits (as well as some of Medeli's even better kits) probably around June or July.
My store is opening very soon and I hope I can count on your business.
If you need more help, I'm always here!
Thanks for watching a& keep an eye out for my store!
Could I simply connect one of these to my laptop and record from there? I want to make electronic music, but I'm not sure I wanna learn how to use drum machines... I actually know how to play the drums, and just wondering about it give me headaches. What do you recommend?
Well...I'll tell you this. I am a drummer (sort of) and I prefer to actually "tap out" my drum patterns. It feels more real, basically because it IS real. Real velocity differences, real subtle nuances...the whole nine. I can program these things and I have been doing so rather successfully for years (at least 14 years now?)...and I'm still learning how to program "real sounding" drum patterns. There's just so much subtlety in actual drumming, ya know? To BE CONTINUED!
Great review man, I really enjoyed it. Quite informative as opposed to the other reviews I've seen on youtube. I'm going to purchase one of these bad boys!
Second, depending on your budget? I would wait just a little bit. Medeli is about to launch here in the US, and when they do, they're releasing the DD-508DX (AWESOME). It's just like their (and Simmons') DD508, except it has a mesh head snare! Another difference from the Simmons is that ALL the pads (except kick) are dual zone. ALSO, I am going to be a dealer of Medeli, so, if you can wait a little and your budget is pretty good, I'd wait.
Thanks...and thanks for watching. In June or July I shuld be selling these through my store (the Medeli brand), but I will also be coming up with varous package deals that include a copy of BFD-Eco! So...if you can wait a little, you might want to. I also have a feeling that coming straight from Medeli and not from OSP or Simmons or anyone else, that they will probably be cheaper and have more options!
Thanks again for watching and keep an eye out for my store (coming soon)!
First off, KUDOS to you for not wanting to bother anyone (unless of course that is the one stipulation for getting drums. In which case, KUDOS for choosing digital drums...there's HUGE potential for digital drums).
Any old headphones will do. Ear buds will work, but if you want great bass response, you're going to need a bigger speaker.
You won't be COMPLETELY quiet. AS you saw in the review, these drums still make noise, just not as much as "real" drums.
Yes. Other pads will work. Amazingly, it's all the same technology at the root (piezo triggers). The only difference in the brains is the samples,, and power of the software being triggered. I haven't tried a double bass pedal. The trigger looks big enough, but just barely (again, not 100% sure). You could always add another floor pedal/pad and use a splitter (basically, two pads for one input).
Thanks for watching and keep an eye out for my store (coming soon)!
Ok, are you asking "How many drums sound 'real' and how many sound like digital drums?" or are you asking, "I want some digital sounding drums...how many does this have?"
to answer #1: They all sound digital. It's not the most sophisticated drum brain ever, but it costs MUCH less.
#2: there are 215 drum sounds. there are 46 drum sounds SPECIFICALLY labeled "electronic"...but there are many more that sound digital.
Thanks! :) I haven't played much in the past few years. I used to play with a band in Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti, MI...but that was like 14 years ago! I have been in need of getting my chops back up to speed! I've got some video lessons that I should probably work on (I'm self-taught if it's not blatantly obvious), but I've been so busy trying to get my store up and running.
Anyways, thanks again and sorry about the late reply!
Thanks for watching and keep an eye out for my store!
Definitely. that's about the price I will sell these ALL the time, but I'll be selling directly from the manufacturer, so there's no "brand name" mark up! :) Plus I'll be selling their whole line of drums (some of which have MUCH better features, like all dual zone pads!) for less than Simmons charges. PLUS if Medeli will allow me to sell "replacement parts" (like pads, racks, & cymbals) I will be able to build "custom kits". u get only what you need!
I will be. My store is opening in about a month (I keep saying that, but it is actually true this time). We are finalizing the details so that my business plan is ready & I can apply for the loans.
Once everything is set, I'll be selling Medeli Instruments (drums, keyboards, etc). I will be selling this kit & several others. I will also be selling acoustic drum sets, custom guitars, and LOTS of other items (all inexpensive).
Hope I can count on your business & thnx 4 watching!
2nd, I don't know the exact model for each kit, but I do know that Medeli makes both kits. There is a 502(j) and a 502(b). Same brain, same number of pads. One has gum rubber heads and the other Mylar. One has round cymbals and mine has the triangles.
I will be a Medeli dealer in about a month or so, & I imagine that Simmons (and OSP, and everyone else) marks these WAY up. Plus, there will be a few models that aren't sold through Simmons.
HEY THIS IS A AWESOME REVIEW. i was wondering, was it hard to setup to work with BFD? im thinking about getting it, does BFD make the high hat work better?
No...it wasn't hard AT ALL. In fact, it was the EASIEST out of the 3 (BFD, Superior Drummer, & Addictive Drums).
If you can wait on this, I would hold off for about a month or 2. I have made connections with Medeli (the TRUE maker of these drums) and I am going to be an official Medeli dealer. They have at least 2 other models that you might be interested in. ALSO, I will be an FXPansion dealer & there are some options you might not have considered with them, too!
What's up my man? First, thanks for taking the time to share you opinions with the world. I have a question for you.... You said all the brands listed above are made by the same company and I was wondering if the Simmons SD5K has the same heads as the one your playing on? I almost purchased the SD5K about 10 minutes ago, but ran across a bunch of bad reviews. Most complained about the response and I would like your opinion on this before buying a piece of ****! :) tks
Hey CheapGearGuy, I'm thinking of getting a cheap kit to use with BFD2 and ezdrummer. What else do I need to run the kit into my computer? What did you use in the vid?
You are going to need some form of MIDI input to your computer. I use the Phonic Firefly. There are MANY products on the market to convert MIDI to usb..Phonic makes the MIDI hub and MIDI hub mini...both would work for you if you don't have a MIDI interface.
Hope this helps. Message me from my main page if you have any more questions.
@CheapGearGuy hey thanks man, i've been googling about it I think i understand how to set it up. Im not new to recording programs so I have an idea about it. Im only concerned about the latency now...
Yeah..latency can KILL your enjoyment of these AWESOME programs...BUT, good news is that some sub-genius out there came up with ASIO4ALL. You can go to their website and download it for free...it's really good...it really works...so much so that Behringer uses it as a driver for all but 1 of there USB devices.
I used it before I got the Phonic Firefly. Now there's no need! :)
I hope that helps you out, too. If not, feel free to write anytime!
As with all things, everything has it's place. Every sound has a perfect nitch that it fits in, & I love this thing. Did I ever say that YOU have to love it? I'm sure there are MANY things that you just LOVE that I would completely hate.
But that is the GREAT thing about you being YOU & me being ME. I can like and love whatever I want to & there's not much anyone can do about it. "To each their own" is the saying. Junk & treasure. I love my amp & you don't have to.
I may have deleted the message where some guy stated that he knew a guy who had this kit and it crapped out after 2 years.
REPLY:
Mine was 2 years old when I bought it. I imagine it will crap out eventually, yes. Just like the great and powerful Roland and all the other major companies.
THEY ARE TRIGGERS, not real drums. You don't pound them like you're breaking rocks. You don't "baby" them either. Replacement pads are $35 each, so I'm not worried.
I like BFD over Toontrack, personally. I don't have to tweak much at all. It doesn't sound or feel sterile to me. just bring down the room and ambiance so it's not so reverbed, sounds great to me. It's all a matter of opinion.Whatever YOU like is obviously "better".
I have tried the whole Toontrack family, and I do like it. I have also tried XLN and love it too, but I ran 14 minutes before editing only showing BFD.
I'm not big on presets. I like to get my hands dirty and make my own presets.

I'll email you!

TheUsed707 1 year ago
@TheUsed707
Thanks for watching!

@CheapGearGuy hey thanks man, i've been googling about it I think i understand how to set it up. Im not new to recording programs so I have an idea about it. Im only concerned about the latency now...
TheUsed707 1 year ago
@TheUsed707

Thank you for your advice, though.

BFD2 is too sterile, you have to tweak it....A LOT. The more it sterile, the more it sounds like electric (IMHO)
try Metal Foundry, it has nicer presets.
And yup, you're right. The original manufacture is Medeli from Hongkong. Others just buying its franchise.
