The corrupt system blended with a very specific type of ignorance which I say is typical for communist countries, made people cover up such things in a very stupid manner. Not that other systems don't cover up things, but they had a very stupid way of doing it.

At the time of the disaster, my father had the unfortunate position of being Chief Surgeon of Kiev Main Hospital... The main clinic/hospital of the capitol city of Ukraine... the one in charge of the department of all surgery. Over the years I have heard a few stories how people were treated at that time, how the Soviets decided to keep things quiet... and what kind of orders were given to the doctors.
At the time I was 3, I have a certification of a Chernobyl Victim.

@charukrsnadasa it can be safe as long as things are done right, the incident with Chernobyl was both alot of human error and reactor error, the problem with the reactor is that is gets way too hot way too quickly, and 1 of the human errors where taking out nearly all control rods and leaving 6 in when the minimum was 26 or what ever! so nuclear power can be very safe as long as things are done right

In reality, the Soviet Union couldn't use Nuclear power. Chernobyl was of the RBMK reactor design, which had SERIOUS design flaws. Even lacked a biological shield and steel plating. Also the fact that the ventilation building was between two reactor blocks also played a key factor.
i almost teared up when the two guys jumped in the water. shows the courage the people had even tho they know they were gonna die. tht shows what people will do to save people they know and love :') even tho im american and from america, this is a good example about how much my dream homeland has influenced the world and everyone in it
@FallinForInfinity101 The water coolant tanks were underneath the reactor, if the superheated fuel had melted through to it then those 1000s of gallons would have instantly turned to steam causing a massive explosion like what happened at Fukushima recently but much larger - it would also have spead radioactive matierial everywhere. When they went down a few years back underneath they found that the superheated fuel HAD melted through into the coolant pool so those guys DID save the day.
Not 47, but more than 2500 men died as a result of this disaster, mainly the 'liquidators', helicopter pilots and a lot of miners who dug under the reactor building, receiving more than 50 rems (it is suspected some received 3 to 5 times this dose). In doing what they did, they saved Russia, Ukraine and Europe from a true disaster.
@amramjose 47 is the "official" numbers given after the disaster, which common sense says is way off. Long-term studies haven't really been done to completion on the after effects of this disaster, long range or otherwise. The Biorobots were given certificates for their service...and that's about it. Chernobyl was one big cover up after another, from the initial accident to what could be considered "safe" radiation dose for a human body to receive. Quite shocking really.
Tschernobyl was the beginning of the fallout which we are living in rightnow.
All those doctors who think smoking causes cancer where brainwashed by pharmaceutical companies and others so called ritalin doctors which are addicted by themselfs to ritalin, seroquel or other synthetic drugs, what they call medicine.
And this is the pharmaceutical introdueced worldwide brainfuck!
Just as like they raise up the natural radioactivity level after this accident.
Human race is as much destructive as radiation itselft.
Wars ,drug dealing and any kind of abuse of human life itself as much dangerous and destructive as Chernobyl accident.
Now we got Fukushima which is WAY WORSE than what chernobyl was already and keep goin with Media and overall information clearly hiding crucial points of what is really happening in japan and how much of radiation spread on island.
Expect new and way bigger wave of "monster" kids and cancer deaths the next 50 years.sadly
@Azatis I wouldnt say WAY WORSE, I mean 4 people died as a result of the Fukushima incident while 47 died as a result of Chernobyl. Also the affected fallout area for Chernobyl is somewhere around 150,000 squared km's involving 3 different countries. Fukushima's affected area is roughly 1250 square kilometers. Not only that considering the concentration of people in Japan Im surprised the affected number wasn't greater. Id say evidence supports that Chernobyl was the worse of the two.
@maesrtk Are you kidding with this? A European Academy of Sciences report, compiled of thousands of individual research projects since 1986, has estimated that about 500,000 deaths are linked to Chernobyl. Right now Fukushima looks set to release far more radiation than Chernobyl, and to go on doing it into the somewhat indefinite future. Right now TEPCO estimates 1 billion Bq per day are being released....please see enenews.com for alternative information....
Sorry those death figures are of immediate death. Not long term effect.
Also, Fukushima may " look" like it will release far more radiation, but due to the technological advances since Chernobyl I highly doubt that Fukushima will "indefinitely" be blasting out high amounts of radiation.
@drceuler I believe it was releasing 200M Bq/hour=4.8billion/day in Sept, now 60M/hour according to Jiji press today. Recently TEPCO worker told us that after the disaster, upon entering the reactor building, his shoes melted instantly.
Damn i love the English black humor ^^ At 36:00 How much is a lethal dosis? about 400 rads mine is 650 i don't know mine mine is a little bit less .... Mine is 1500 Silence..... "Show off" xD
@arunas1981 Nope its a "docu-drama" and one of the better shows about this terrible event.......It sure beats the "Seconds from Disaster" episode, that one is awful
I wonder if the Japanese will just let their reactors burn off. They cannot get access to them, they didn't blow their top like Chernobyl, so how will they cool their cores. I like the lie that if the rods go in the reactors stop, I guess you also have 1000s of gallons of water a minute to for a decade or more to cool them, this fact was omitted. Also, since Chernobyl was 2 years old, they didn't have several cores next to the reactors like in Japan, there's a potential of 42 cores blowing!!
@1983tiff its what they are afraid might happen. yes it might be. the difference however is that they still have an intact reactor...it just does not cool. so unless cooled it will explode and it will become chernobyl allover again.
@1983tiff not at all. It's been pumped so full of berillium at this point, it will never operate again, or even be capable of sustaining a reaction. In a few months, they will begin removing fuel from the plant, and that will be the end of that particular reactor and vessel.
@Polybun Ohh wow. I'm just wondering if Japan will be able to rebuild after all of this??? I seen a special on t.v. last week and they showed the full effect ,and my jaw was dropped ! I didnt know it was THAT bad..... the news made it a lighter than it really was.
@1983tiff it isn't that bad at all. Not the nuclear end of it anyway. They will recover the same way everyone else does you retard. They will keep moving forward. They were far worse off after WWII.
im not 100% certain but no. i can understand why you think this, considering the fact these events are both the same at first appearance. But the reactors at fukushima are completely different design than the ones at Chernobyl, mainly in the fact that the ones at Chernobyl use graphite as a moderator while the ones at fukushima use water so theres no high amounts of radioactive material involved.
@1983tiff The Japanese acted faster, but still downplayed the severity of the situation (due to embarrassment and also not wanting to be caught in bed with the power plants' operators). Fortunately, there are a few differences-the fire did not burn as hot or carry the radiation as high, because it was not a graphite-based plant. In Chernobyl, the graphite caused a serious problem. Still, there will be birth defects and problems for years to come. And the ocean is being contaminated...
If you want to know whats really happening behind the scene at Fukushima watch this film and replace the Russian actors with Japanese.
Start taking your Iondine supplements NOW!!! Don't wait like sheep in line at the slaughter house. Protect yourself and your family today, don't wait while the lie through their teeth. Read the rest of the ways they are killing us off and why. Defend yourselves while you can.
@altjff15 I've been a ND for 17 years and have 400 clients across America. Lugol's solution is over 100yrs old and was regularly used Doctors until WW2 when they discovered synthetics. It 's a combo of 10% potassium iodide and 5% iodine. . . the exact ratios found in the human thyroid. Not only does it protect you from radioactive iodine but restores what's lost from drinking fluoridated water & brominated bread. The human thyroid carries approx. 15mg so take no more than that per day.
I wish I could say it was just a consequence of communism that so much of this was covered up, but it seems the Japanese government isn't being straight with their people either. If there really is a breach in Unit 3, they may need their own "Liquidators" in order to prevent a bigger tragedy.
@Aracos79 communism has nothing to do with it. i live in NY north of NYC about 30 minutes is a nuclear power plant that could wipe out most of long island south connecticut and the north of NJ....there are no evacuation plans incase this might happen. people live here thinking they are perfectly safe when infact they can die overnight waiting in traffic to evacuate an invacuatable city. what does communism have to do with that? nothing. its the power of information and control of panic.
@SovetskyySoyuzah rubbish, they are safe NOW. If you think coal is any safer, you are a fucking moron. With coal you ensure death of every living thing you know. It just takes longer is all.
You said you live 30 minutes from a nuclear power plant in New York. I thought you might find this interesting: I've always lived within 30 minutes of the most infamous nuclear power plant in the United States, Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island. Three Mile Island was the world's worst nuclear accident from 1979 until 1986, when Chernobyl happened. There was a partial meltdown. Luckily, a situation as bad as Chernobyl and Fukushima never happened here.
@onnanob fukushima and three mile island were on par. The difference is that the three mile plants block house was of a stronger design so it's hydrogen explosions, note I said explosions, didn't lift the roof off. That said, fukushima is hardly a disaster.
Thanks for your interesting reply! You have no idea how thankful I am that Three Mile Island wasn't worse than it was! I was 13 years old when the accident happened, and lived in Manheim, Pennsylvania. This whole area could have been an exclusion zone, like the zone around the Chernobyl plant. It was such a scary time. I know the design of Three Miles Island is supposed to be good, but it seemed anything could have happened when the one reactor had the partial meltdown.
@ChocolateSisterGraph What is evil about it? Accidents happen. If you want evil, take a good look at the catholic church. The difference is intent here. They never intended to hurt anyone, and never would have, had the plant been run with in operating paremeters. Religion sets out to hurt people. If man has invented any thing truly evil, it is religion.
